Aequornithes (dal latino aequor, distesa d'acqua e, dal greco, ornithes, uccelli), o veri uccelli acquatici^[3] sono definiti come "il clade meno inclusivo contenente Gaviidae e Phalacrocoracidae".^[4]

La monofilia del gruppo è attualmente supportata da numerosi studi filogenetici molecolari.^[5]^[6]^[7]^[8]

Aequornithes include i cladi Gaviiformes, Sphenisciformes, Procellariiformes, Ciconiiformes, Suliformes e Pelecaniformes. Non include diversi gruppi non correlati di uccelli acquatici come fenicotteri e svassi (Mirandornithes), uccelli costieri e alche (Charadriiformes), o gli Anseriformi.

Sulla base di un'analisi dell'intero genoma degli ordini di uccelli, i kagu e il tarabuso del sole (Eurypygiformes) e le tre specie di fetonte (Phaethontiformes) insieme designate come Eurypygimorphae sono il sister group più vicino ad Aequornithes nel clade Ardeae.^[3]

Cladogramma basato sugli studi di Burleigh, JG et al. (2015)^[9] e Stiller et al. (2024)^[10] con alcuni nomi tratti da Sangster, G. e Mayr, G. (2021).^[2]

Il clade Feraequornithes venne nominato da Sangster & Mayr, 2021, per includere i Pelecanimorphae e i Procellariimorphae, escludendo gli svassi (Gaviiformes). Hanno definito questo clade nel PhyloCode come "il clade meno inclusivo contenente Pelecanus onocrotalus e Procellaria aequinoctialis".^[2]
