Happy Easter!

We made a little trip to my brother and his wife and to see my little nephew. He turned 1 two weeks ago. So we had much to celebrate. We had a few great days but since yesterday we're all sick. The little one brought it home from the kindergarden. I hope it doesn't stay for long.

Icon Tutorial #3 + Icon Gradients

My third icon tutorial. A tutorial all about coloring.

I don't use Photoshop or PSP. I work with Corel Photo-Paint. But you should be able to do this with PS or PSP. All brushes I used in this icon are made by inxsomniax, all gradients are made by myself.

We'll make this icon:

Crop and resize to 100x100

Sharpen it - Edge level (%): 25; Threshold: 15

Duplicate it until you have 3 layers with the following blend mods:

Layer 1: normal
Layer 2: screen
Layer 3: soft light

Desaturate Layer 3 Image --> Adjust --> Desaturate

Merge layers

That's our base.

Layer 1: duplicate the base, desaturate it and set it to soft light

Layer 2: add a new layer and fill it with a pale yellow color, set it to multiply

Layer 3: add a new layer with this gradient and set it to soft light

-->

Layer 4: add a black one pixel border

Layer 5: add the gradient again, set to screen

-->

Layer 6: add some brushes (jpg.files - set to mulitply, opacity 22%)

Layer 7: add another gradient, set it to soft light

-->

Layer 8: and a gradient again, set to saturation -> opacity 22%

-->

Done!

And I've got something else for you. The gradients I use to make my icons are always made by myself.
I've made a zip.file with all gradients (jpg.files) I've made for my last icon batch.

Icon tutorial #2

I wrote another icon tutorial.

I don't use Photoshop or PSP. I work with Corel Photo-Paint. You can't upload new brushes to Photo-Paint, so this is also a tut how to use the jpg images instead of brushes.

All resources used for this icon were made by inxsomniax.

We'll make this icon:

Crop and resize to 100x100.

Sharpen it - Edge level (%): 25; Threshold: 15

Duplicate it until you have 4 layers with the following blend mods:

Layer 1: normal
Layer 2: screen
Layer 3: screen
Layer 4: soft light

Desaturate Layer 4, Image -> Adjust --> Desaturate

Merge layers.

That's our base.

Now add the brushes.
I used these brushes by Thia. Remember I've used the jpg.files.

Add them like images and set them to multiply. Arrange them on your canvas until it looks like that:

Place the base on top of all your layers and set to screen:

Add texture. I'm not certain which texture I used in this icon but it has to be one of Thias Textures because I love them so much. Something like this one:

Set your texture layer to screen. And add the final touch with some more brushes on top of all your layers.
(Invert the jpg imagebrush and set to screen.)

And you're done.

my first icon tutorial

I wrote my first icon tutorial.
Requested by jr_moon (I hope this is what you had in mind, hon.)

All my icons and arts are kind of experiments and some are just accidents.
Most of them were created by playing around. That's why I can never do the same icon twice.
So it was a little challenge to do this tutorial. *g*
While writing it I've made a new icon trying to recreate the look that was asked for.
I don't use Photoshop or PSP. I work with Corel Photo-Paint. But I hope that's no problem. The basic tools are nearly the same and that's all you need for this icon. Also english is not my first language. I hope you can understand it.

We'll make this icon

First picture:
Resize to 100x100 and desaturate it Image -> Adjust --> Desaturate
That's our base. (Layer 1 = set to normal)
Duplicate it again and again until you have 6 layers with the following blend mods:

Layer 2 = screen	Layer 3 = Color Dodge	Layer 4 = Color Dodge
Layer 5 = Screen	Layer 6 = Color Burn

Merge the layers so that there's just 1 layer and a white background layer left.
Took a round sharp edged eraser and erase the black background.
Don't erase everything black. Try to create an outline.

Second picture:
First you need a white background layer.
You just have to do almost the same with it than with the other pic.
Resize to 100x100 and desaturate it Image -> Adjust --> Desaturate
Duplicate it again and again...

Background (white)
Layer 1 = Hard Light
Layer 2 = Screen
Layer 3 = Color Dodge
Layer 4 = Color Dodge
Layer 5 = Screen
Layer 6 = Color Burn

That's what you'll get.

Merge layers.

Okay, you're nearly done. Put your two pictures together.
Put the second picture on a layer on top of the first picture.
Both set to normal. Lower the opacity of the layer on top to 50% and erase whatever you don't want to see.

Add a one pixel border.

Add some text and you're done!
