This community was created for the sane Harry Potter fan. If not sane, at least not completely deranged.
If you want somewhere to discuss Potter-related Satan worship and/or fanfiction which is not likely to be to everyone's taste (i.e. graphic sex, slash, incest and other 'risky' topics) then please look elsewhere. Rather, this is a place to discuss plots, things you hope to see in upcoming books, observations you made, predictions, etc. Remember, keep it clean folks.
Have a particularly juicy theory? Want to discuss what disappointed or pleased you in the books or films? Heard a rumor about the cast, production, or novels? Know a fantastic "Harry Potter" Link? Need some answers about one of the books? Perhaps you'd like to post some icons or graphics you made? Or do you just want to bask in the warm glow of other fan(atics?)
All are welcome to join, post, and discuss.
With this message, I would like to thank all of you who answered my questionnaire at http://fanfiction.frontexperts.com (see the original message below) and have given me helpful feedback. Many of you who sent me emails with comments let me know that my questionnaire did not fully embrace your experience with fan fiction. Because a survey is a highly standardized research instrument, there was no way of avoiding this problem but I decided to broaden my research design according to the concerns conveyed to me. Thus, I would like to conduct a group discussion with fan fiction authors where they will have the opportunity to freely talk about their experience without being bound by narrow questions like in the survey.
Therefore, I am looking for Harry Potter fan fiction authors who will attend the LeakyCon 2009 from May 21st-24th in Boston and who would be willing to get together for an hour or two as a group to discuss their experience with me and the other fan fiction authors. As far as I can tell from the LeakyCon schedule, Saturday morning would probably work best to meet for the discussion. Also, it would give us a chance to get to know each other on Thursday or Friday. I will provide a space at the hotel where we will be undisturbed and make sure we have drinks and snacks. A group of 8-12 people would work best but if there are too few people for a group discussion, I would be happy to meet with any of you informally at LeakyCon to talk about your experience as a fan fiction author.
By participating in a group discussion, you would make an immense contribution to the quality and accuracy of my research. I am looking forward to meeting you in person and hearing about your life in Harry Potter fan fiction. If you want to participate please let me know until May 19th by replying to this message or at fanfictions@ gmx.net or petra.baumann@edu.uni-graz.at.
Thank you so much for your repeated help! Best, Petra
im so confused. i was under the impression that half blood prince comes out july 17 (in the US), then i saw a preview that said july 15. ive gone to a bunch of different websites and half say the 15, half say the 17. the warner brothers site and yahoo both say the 17, but wikipedia and mugglenet say the 15. anybody know for sure which date it is? i have to know which day to take off of work so i can get in line early :-)
Hello! I hope it's OK that I'm posting this message here. I do not have any financial interest whatsoever, this message regards academic research only!
My name is Petra Baumann and I’m doing research for my master’s thesis in sociology on Harry Potter fan fiction at the University of Graz, Austria. As a sociologist, I am especially interested in the social background of fan fiction authors: where they come from, how old they are, etc. Through my research I found that, many studies on fan fiction are done in the fields of literary studies, women studies, or cultural studies but there are very little sociological data available, especially on the Harry Potter fan fiction community.
In order to gather sociological data on Harry Potter fan fiction authors, I developed a short online questionnaire. If you are an author of Harry Potter fan fiction you would immensely help me with my research if you could answer this questionnaire at http://fanfiction.frontexperts.com
The questions will take about 10 minutes to answer and there will be no spam or advertising when you click the link. The evaluation is done anonymously and the data will be used solely for academic research. If you have any questions regarding the questionnaire or my research please feel free to contact me at fanfictions@gmx.net or visit my LifeJournal.
I don't know if this has been discussed before, but I was just thinking about this the last few days and was wondering what other people thought happened to Lavender Brown after DH.
The book isn't right in front of me so I can't remember the exact wording, but my interpretation of it is that Lavender and another person were thrown off the balcony and that is when Fenrir Greyback sprinted over to her to take advantage of the fact that she was just laying there (I assume). It doesn't say that he actually bit her or anything, but that Hermione blasted him back off of her.
What do we think? Was she bitten, or just a close call? I think if she had been killed then there would have been mention of it since she was a part of Dumbledore's Army. If she was bitten, then we don't know if she would've turned into a vampire because we don't know if there was a full moon and if Lupin or Greyback had turned. It's always been a very confusing passage for me.
I think that if she was bitten then she would just be like Bill and have "wolf like characteristics".
Anyone else order the collector's edition? I just received mine today, and I'm quite happy with it. I also bought the $8 regular edition as a reading copy, but unfortunately that hasn't come yet. :[
Okay I feel like such a dork for posting this, but I was rereading Order of the Phoenix and noticed that JK Rowling throws "Sectumsempra" into this book.
In the scene where James flips Snape upside down (while Harry is watching the memory in the Pensieve) there is a moment right before that where Snape flicks his wand, and without saying anything, a gash appears on James's face and he begins to bleed.
In this scene we were clearly meant to notice the flipping (and later Harry discover's that spell too) but I never really paid attention to the cut before.
(Okay- checked HP Lexicon, and it's mentioned there, so I'm not brilliant, but perhaps it's new for someone else too)
I encourage everyone actively involved with livejournal to VOTE today for the "lj advisory board" before it's too late! Today is the last day to select your candidate! VOTE HERE.
You may have heard that one candidate in particular is accused of being "anti-fandom". However, I know these accusations to be false first hand. As such I am pleased to embrace jameth as my pro-"fandom" candidate for the lj advisory board.
This article has some priceless descriptions of fake Harry Potter books.
My favorite description is for Harry Potter and the Big Funnel:
After six years at Hogwarts, Harry Potter becomes an intern sorcerer and is assigned to teach at the Honiton School. Harry has a painful time in his aunt’s house, as Dudley has met a belly-dancing girl. As Harry prepares to report to his job, Bat Bug warns him disaster awaits.
At the school, his students become wooden stools one after another. Harry doesn’t know whether an evil student is behind this, or if his old benefactor Hagrid is making a mistake, or if the shadow of Voldemort has returned. Did it have something to do with the big funnel?
For those not familiar with the term, machinema is 'cinema made with machines,' more specifically it's movies made with video games as animations. There are some really great ones out there. My favorite is a very detailed version of Deathly Hallows.
Anyways, all the machinema out there inspired me to make my own. So behind the cut is my own contribution as well as the first chapter of the aforementioned interpretation and one other lovely machinema video.
I'm working on a... all I can really say right now is that it's a " creative writing project", because it's not fanfic, but saying anything more would be saying too much. Anyway, I personally can never get into fanfic, so I was hoping that there's a few people here who do read it that can help me out. It's been established that there are wizarding schools in other countries. It's also a safe assumption that most, if not all, other wizarding schools likely have house systems. Has anyone encountered any fanfic which gave a plausible name to a wizarding school in North America? And, if so, were there decent house names given as well?
Also, what is the word used for "mudblood" in the Spanish translations of the books?
For those of you who participated in the "Hallowood Squares" contest for predicting what would happen in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the winners have been announced.
I must say I am quite pleased with how well the contest went and with the amount of participation. Thanks to those of you who played!
Can anyone recommend any good fanfiction out there? I'd prefer stuff with minor or very minor characters, but anything that's well written will do. A lot of the Anon editors on Wikipedia like to report fanfic as fact, and I'd like to know what they're talking about. :P
Hey, guys. I'm sorry about the lateness of this post but better late than never, right? ;) Anyway, I'm leaving tomorrow to go on vacation/move to another state and will be gone until the 18th at the very earliest. Until then, remember to use your cut tags and if you have any questions, I'm sure ingenuemuse will be only too happy to help. :D See you soon!
Some recent discussion has made me curious about how readers respond to the character of Ginny Weasley. So I made a poll. Please vote.
Thanks.
ETA: Sorry, I forgot I had set my comment settings to friends only to avoid drive-by DH spoilers. I've now reset it so that any registered user can comment, so feel free to leave a comment at my journal if you have something to add. Or you can still post a comment here if you'd prefer.
I know it's pretty silly for me to ask something like this in a fairly intelligent community, but it's been bugging me... does anyone have any guesses regarding Professor Flitwick's bloodline? We know that Hagrid's huge because he's half-giant. Is there any genetic explanation for Flitwick's appearance? I mean, I know it's entirely possible he's just a naturally short human (who happens to be a wizard) much like the actor who plays him in the movies, but in stories like this, any time a character's physical appearance seems out of the ordinary, there's usually some explanation for it. I personally think he might be part goblin (considering the guy that plays him in the movies also plays Griphook).
