I read a book recently about a girl who cut herself, and she was an ice skater. She would practice in the morning, and then go to school. Eventually, a teacher found out, but the girl wouldn't let her see her arms until after a long time. I think she ends up getting therapy and maybe quitting the ice skating...? Anyone know what that was called?

There was some stupid book that I read about 12 years ago... man, I feel old! It was about this girl who wanted the same outfit everyone else at her school had, but her family couldn't afford it. She wanted a "PineApple" brand (whatever that was) shirt, but they could only afford a cheap knock-off... the dreaded Apple brand:) Does anyone else remember this book or what it was called?

I'm new to this community. I happen to be 24 though, but I still get a kick out of books targeted for teens. :) I was going through boxes the other day and I found some magazines from when I was a teen so I thought I'd see if any of you were interested. (I don't know if this is allowed, I didn't see it on the info page) I either want to give them away (you pay shipping) or we can swap for some teen books. I love Christopher Pike and R.L. Stine so if you have any to trade let me know. :) Here is what I have:

YM May 1999, Jessica Biel on cover
YM March 1999, Drew Barrymore
People Weekly, Sexiest Man Alive 1998 Harrison Ford (not teen, but...)
Teen People February 1999, 'N Sync
Teen People November 1998, Celebrity Syle Awards issue
Teen People August 1998, Backstreet Boys
Teen People Dec 1998/Jan 1999, I Still Know what you did last Summer cast
Teen People October 1998, Usher
Teen People March 1999, Alicia Silverstone
Twist February 1999, Kerr Smith and Meredith Monroe
Teen March 1999, Brandy
Teen April 1999, Jewel
Teen September 1998, Backstreet Boys
Teen January 1999, Drew Barrymore
Teen December 1998, 'N Sync
Teen February 1999, Joshua Jackson

Thanks for looking and happy reading!

It tells the story of Kaye (a realistic teen…up to a point) who discovers upon moving back home that she is actually a faerie. Her “make-believe” childhood friends fill her in, because, surprise, they are faeries as well! She unwittingly finds herself involved in the middle of a faerie war between the two courts- the Unseelie and Seelie. She also is strangely attracted to a mysterious knight named Roiben. The whole story was very dark, and while I didn’t outright dislike the book, I felt like there were way too many loose ends that needed to be tied up. 3/5

55. Once Upon a Marigold by Jean Ferris pgs. 266

Predictable and mediocre...

As someone who enjoys original fairy tales, I had some pretty high hopes for this book. It didn’t meet them. Ed, a troll who lives in the woods comes across a young boy who has run away named Christian. Unable to find his family, Ed adopts him. Christian grows and soon tires of his non-existent social life. He yearns to go to the castle across the river, partly because of the excitement, partly because he has a crush on the young Princess Marigold, who he has been spying on with his telescope. Ed reluctantly agrees to let him go, and before he knows it, he befriends Marigold and finds out her secret. Several times I just wanted to flip to the last page and go “I knew it!” but I kept reading. I think the best part of the book was the beginning. If you don’t like it then don’t even bother reading the rest. 2/5

A criminal serving time for a burglary that almost killed him, Montmorency is hated among the other prisoners because of frequent trips out of the prison. Robert Farcett, the young doctor that saved Montmorency after his near-fatal burglary, regularly takes him to lecture halls around Victorian London to show off his medical expertise. It is at one of these lectures that Montmorency hears about the new sewage system and an idea forms in his head. Before long, Montmorency is conjuring up a plan to use the underground network to help him with his burglaries, but he needs a partner…or does he? This novel had great style and characterization. The story was gripping as well. I heard Montmorency is coming back in a sequel. I can’t wait. 4/5

Hi! I'm not a teen strictly speaking as I am in my early 20s but I am interested in Teen Literature and teenagers opinions of it. I want to be a teacher some day and so end up reading a lot of Children's and Teen Lit. I also really like to read it. Some of my favorite books include, Abarat, Little Women, Esperanza Rising, Ella Enchanted, The Enchanted Forest Chronicles and the Princess Diaries.

49. The Great God Pan by Donna Jo Napoli Country: Ancient Greece

Expected better but mildly interesting…

I’ve read some of the author’s other retellings and was a bit disappointed with this one. We meet Pan, the half goat/half god who basically flits around the woods with other mythical creatures all day. It isn’t until he meets Iphigenia and falls in love with her that his life really seems to have a purpose. People with any background in Greek mythology know that Pan had a curse placed on him upon birth that he will never be loved in return. His quest to find Iphigenia again then seems a bit fruitless to the reader, but what we don’t realize is that he may be able to save her from her father’s mission to sacrifice her. This book needed more detail. I felt it was lacking in some other areas as well, as the plot meandered quite a bit. I did like how the author included a family tree at the beginning so we understood how everyone was related however. 2/5

50. Inside the Walls of Troy by Clemence McLaren Country: Ancient Greece

Good ideas, not the best execution…

We’ve heard the male version of the Trojan War for centuries. What about the women involved? How did Helen feel? What would it have been like to be Cassandra and have to watch your brothers head off into battle? The author takes you there. While personally I believe she could have included even more viewpoints of other women, and switched back and forth between Helen and Cassandra, the author opted to start with Helen’s life as a child and switch to Cassandra’s viewpoint after Helen arrives in Troy. While many would think this would make the book a bit unbalanced, it actually works quite well, as we see Cassandra’s feelings towards Helen greatly change over the many years Troy is under siege. Overall, a pretty enjoyable read. 3/5

Ok I'm currently reading The Angels Trilogy by Lurlene McDaniel. It's a very cheesey predictable novel but it's not bad. If you're looking for a nice quick "chick-flick" kind of book I highly reccomend it. It's about a girl Leah and she gets cancer but she meets these Amish people and as the back of the book says they, "captivate Leah with their simple loving ways. When Leah discovers she has cancer her new friends show her that miracles can happen. And that sometimes angels can appear in the most unexpected places." Yep.

Since the book was written in 1929, it gives it a certain charm to the author’s writing, at the same time though; the author occasionally uses terms that would not be considered “politically correct” today. I know many older books do this, but since this book is geared towards children, I think I might substitute in more appropriate words if reading to a youngster. However, despite this, I found this book a cute story that gives you a look at how people were viewed and supposedly acted during the 1800s, where the story takes place. 3/5

It takes the story of Sleeping Beauty, now named Aurore, and how at the age of 16, instead of pricking her finger, strange happenings afflict the whole kingdom where she lives. She decides to leave and enter the nearby Forest, where no one dares set foot. It is here that she meets Prince Ironheart, who is on a quest as well. The two band together to try and break their curses. While I admit the fact Aurore is very likable, I think the other characters and predicable plot could have used some sprucing up. 2/5

And the storyline is repetitive quite a bit. However, this is just something about the story of Prince Edward and Princess Elizabeth who take a journey to visit the Engraver to break a marriage contract that makes you want to read on. It might be the adorable drawings. It might be wondering what strange place they stumble across next. That’s what Jessie, the main character of this fast-paced novel has to deal with when her mother reveals that the year is 1996, instead of 1840. Jessie and her family live inside a tourist attraction, where everything is kept “authentic” and only the adults know the truth. However, a diphtheria epidemic has hit the town, and the owners of the tourist attraction are refusing to give the children modern medical care. Jessie’s mother says Jessie is their only hope that one of them can escape to the outside and get the children the medicine they need. Jessie’s escape and reaction to the “outside world” make for captivating reading, as she rushes against the clock in her mission to save of the children of Clifton who have fallen ill, including her younger sister. 3/5

Hello new member! I'm Beth I'm a teen...obviously and I love to read.

Some of my favorite books:
Harry Potter (of course) by JK Rowling
Pirates (it's a really good susepnsful story) by Celia Rees
and my all time favorite series...
His Dark Materials by Phillip Pullman. If you haven't read the His Dark Materials books yet you HAVE to read them. They're so emotional yet fantasy and SO good.

As you can see I'm slighly obsessed with fantasy. :) My parents keep trying to get me to read nonfiction...ugh. Lol...does anyone know some good non-fiction books I might like?

Along with her newfound celebrity comes…yup, you guessed it, a romance with the president’s son. I could see most “twists” in the story from a mile away. I do like the minor plot about art however. 2/5

T Anderson is a good writer, and you see glimpses of this in this book. Those few glimpses aren’t enough to pull this mixed-up plot of feuding fast-food chains, bullies and love into a coherent, entertaining novel. Anthony, who caught his girlfriend cheating on him with a guy (Turner) that works at the local fast-food joint, O’Dermott’s, decides he should work there too to get “revenge” on Turner. Anthony’s crazy ideas end up getting him in some very odd situations, none which reflect very well on his employer.
#32. The Goose Girl by Shannon Hale pgs.383
Dragged on FAR too long…
As someone who has never heard the actual Grimm fairy tale about the goose girl/princess, I can’t exactly judge this book against the original story. As a story in itself, I found it just okay. We are first introduced to Anidori-Kiladra Talianna Isilee, Crown Princess of Kildenree when she is just a young girl, and helped by her aunt, discovers she has the ability to speak to animals. As the first child born to the King and Queen, she is supposed to be first in line to the throne, but Ani (as she is called) doesn’t really feel like she fits in. After her father dies, the Queen announces that Ani’s younger brother will take the throne and Ani will be send to marry the prince of Bayern, a nearby country that Kildenree has only a “civil” relationship with. Ani, her guards and her lady-in-waiting, Selia, set off on the long journey to Bayern, only to find out that Selia has other plans. Ani eventually arrives in Bayern, but must be careful to blend in. She ends up taking a job as goose girl. While I think this first book by the author was good, it wasn’t GREAT. Too many characters and the fact it dragged on in some spots made me not like it as much as I could have. I think I might check out the next book by Hale however, because it centers on interesting and little developed character that appeared in this book. 2/5

#33. Aleutian Sparrow by Karen Hesse pgs.158
Not a fan of poetry? You don’t have to be!
This book, a collection of short poems, tells the story of a little known event during WWII. In 1942, Japan attacked the Aleutian Islands. Vera, the narrator tells of how the native people, the Aleuts, were removed from the islands and relocated to the Alaskan mainland. The military claimed it was for their own protection. Over the course of three long, hard years, we see how Vera and her fellow people deal with prejudice (because of their resemblance the Japanese) and daily life in an internment camp. Hesse is wonderful at conveying many emotions to the reader. Though it was a short read, it made me want to learn more about the Aleutian Islands and maybe attempt to read more poetry, and that’s saying a lot!3/5

TO DATE: 7791/15000 or 52% done!

Abarat by Clive Barker

This is a great read for people who enjoy fantasy stories as well as amazing images like the ones Clive Barker provides throughout the book in illustrations. This is only the first book in the series (or pair...I'm not sure, I know it has a sequel), so it only gives a taste into where the storyline is going to play. It all starts out with Candy Quackenbush who is given an assignment about writing a paper on her hometown of Chickentown, and her incredible thirst in finding something truly strange about her rather simple town. But what she ends up finding is a whole 'nother world in itself filled with unforgettable characters and gigantic secrets. This book is an easy read, but do beware that it will leave you yearning for more as you turn the last page. I recommend this book to those that enjoy reading fantasy (Philip Pullman, Madeleine L'Engle [butchered her name which I'm very sorry about]), but want an easy read, or those that liked the Wizard of Oz.
