Biography

Douglas Engelbart is Notable.

Douglas was born in 1925 in Portland, Oregon, and grew up outside of town in the Johnson Creek area. He went to Franklin High in Portland, and at Oregon State University in Corvallis, graduating in 1948 with a bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering. Between his Sophomore and Junior years he spent two years in the US Navy as a Radio and Radar Technician in the Philippines. In 1951 he married Ballard Fish, a graduate of Mills College in Oakland, CA. By 1955 He received his Masters and PhD in Electrical Engineering at UC Berkeley.

Douglas went on to become a notable pioneer of the Information Age through his Augmenting Human Intellect Research Center at Stanford Research Institute (SRI) in Menlo Park, CA. Best known for inventing the computer mouse (1963) and presenting what later became known as the “Mother of All Demos” (1968), he is credited with laying the foundations of modern computing — from personal interactive computing to hypermedia, teleconferencing, networking, knowledge work, teamwork, human-computer interaction, and more.

Douglas loved the outdoors - hiking, camping, bike riding, etc. - and folk dancing with his wife Ballard, with whom he enjoyed four children and nine grandchildren.

In the 1930 census, Douglas (age 5) was the son of Carl Engelbart at Portland (Districts 1-219), Multnomah, Oregon.^[1]

In the 1940 census, Duglas (age 15) was the single son of Gladest Engelbart in Morrow, Oregon.^[2]

Douglas was recorded as a resident in 1948 in Multnomah, Oregon.^[3]

In the 1950 census, Douglas (age 25), Electrical Engineer, was the never married roomer of Rosalia Miller in Fremont Judicial Township, Santa Clara, California.^[4]

Douglas (age 26) married Ballard Fish on 5 May 1951 in Santa Clara, California.^[5]

Douglas was recorded as a resident in November 1955 in California.^[6]

Douglas died (age 88) on 3 July 2013, in Atherton, California.^[7][8]
