One Hundred Lights: A Holiday Romance Novella
One school dance. Two single parents who should stay away from each other. A magical holiday hunt for one hundred boxes of fairy lights for their kids’ school dance that makes falling in love inevitable.
*content warning: this book contains an almost-cheating trope (not between the main characters)*
Britt
There are few worse things than developing feelings for your best friend’s husband. I tried to do the right thing and step away from both of them, but they got divorced anyway. That’s definitely one of those worse things. And now Adrian’s at my front door, insisting on helping me decorate for the kids’ holiday dance. And I still want him. I also still want to make up with my best friend, but I’m afraid it’s all unforgivable.
Adrian
I know I should stay away from my ex-wife’s ex-best friend. Britt doesn’t want to see me. She pushed us away six months ago, but things still ended in divorce. Now I’m trying to get it together as a single dad, and I keep running into Britt at school events. I want to smooth things over with her. Britt won’t talk to me, but she needs help with the school dance, so if I just show up at the planning meeting, she won’t be able to say no. What could go wrong with this plan?
Tropes:
- Holiday / Christmas romance
- Forbidden love / almost cheating (not between main characters)
- Second chance
- Ex-wife's best friend / Ex-best friend's ex-husband
- Cats with funny names
- Open door/ medium spice
This is a prequel novella to the completed Hart Sisters Trilogy: If We Pretend, Unless It's You, and Since We're Here. If you read One Hundred Lights first, prepare yourself to despise Britt & Adrian in If We Pretend!

About the author

Chrissy Hopewell started her love for romance novels by sneaking her mom’s steamy books in middle school. She has spent varying amounts of time overseas, including working at a pub in Dublin, waitressing at a hotel in the Scottish Borders, and studying and living in London for five years. Because of these experiences, international flair and accents often show up in her stories. Chrissy now lives in the suburbs of Cincinnati, Ohio with her family, where she quite openly reads delightful contemporary romances.

Christmas forbidden love quickie
Reviewed in the United States on November 30, 2025This was my first read by this author. It’s a cute quick read, only 96 pages. The author does a great job of establishing the story in a short amount of time. It’s a forbidden love situation, a single friend developed feelings for her best friend’s husband. There no cheating. Nothing happens until after the married couple splits.
I didn’t realize it’s a prequel to the authors Hart Sisters series when I read it. I’m glad I did. I’ve been seeing book one on tik tok, and probably would have hated Britt and Adrian without reading this one.
Looking forward to reading the rest of the series!

Such a unique romance but I loved it
Reviewed in the United States on January 16, 2025One Hundred Lights is a prequel novella that sets up the Hart sisters trilogy, set directly before If We Pretend. We meet this novella’s couple in If We Pretend as the villains of the story – it’s the FMC’s ex husband, Adrian, and her former best friend Britt. They’re definitely the worst in that story – and so it’s kind of a redemption read to get their point of view here. There’s no active cheating that happens in the book, but the feelings they have for each other while marriages are falling apart certainly falls into a “morally gray” area. However, it is sweet to see how Adrian shows up for Britt to save the school dance and try to smooth over their former friendship, even if their connection was anything but platonic.
While Chrissy’s been sharing this story with newsletter subscribers for a while, I’m glad she’s giving this story its own moment in the “light” (pun intended). I enjoy all of Chrissy’s writing and One Hundred Lights was no exception! A quick read at 100 pages – how perfect with the title? – it’s a great one to add to your holiday reads and to help finish out your reading goals! Thank you to the author for a review copy.

Forbidden Love at Christmas
Reviewed in the United States on December 20, 2024I didn’t realize that this story is part of the author’s Hart Sisters series, which I have not read any of. Normally, this would put me off reading this book because I don’t enjoy feeling like I’m coming into the story where previous events from the other books are alluded to. Though this does happen in this story, I decided to overlook it and I’m glad I did because the story was enjoyable and learning that I might actually hate Britt and Adrian if I read the other stories, I probably won’t read them because I actually liked Britt and Adrian a lot.
I don’t think developing feelings for your best friend’s husband is ever a good idea but the way Britt and Adrian dealt with it was likely the only way, however, their feelings ran so much deeper and even though Britt tried to do the admirable thing and stay away from them, Adrian and his wife got divorced anyway. My only issue with this story was Britt’s desire to get her friendship with Adrian’s ex-wife back. I think Britt is asking for the impossible, especially when Reese finds out that Britt and Adrian do get together.
This book moves pretty fast with each chapter alternating between Britt and Adrian’s perception, which I really enjoy. I thought the characters were easy to relate to and it was easy to see how their friendship could begin to blossom into something more and it was quite sweet to witness.
My Final Verdict: Overall, this story is a good addition to the Christmas reading list. I recommend it to readers who enjoy Christmas themes, forbidden love and second chance tropes.

I gotta read the rest of the series now
Reviewed in the United States on November 1, 2024ARC Review: 4/5 stars
So confession: I have a habit of reading things out of order, which I did with this series! I started with Since We're Here (book 3) then read One Hundred Lights (Prequel) so I might have a different opinion, especially because I haven't read book 1 yet. But here's my newbie to the series review! ❤️
First off: I think I would have enjoyed this book more if I would've read the series in order (my fault!) here's my wishes then we'll get into the things I loved!
I wish this book had more humor. It felt so heavy on the regret for the relationship, there left little room for some comedy like I remember in "Since We're Here". I missed it!
Other than that I thought this book was cute! I was a little hesitant because I didn't think I would like the trope of "ex-husband and ex-best friend", but it didn't give me the ick or intense cheating vibes like I thought it would. That was a plus for me! I think these two genuinely were meant to be together and it took a lot of courage for them to pursue their relationship.
This is a pretty quick read and it was pretty easy! It definitely cemented in my brain I need to read the rest of the series because I need to get to know Reese and get her thoughts!

One Hundred Lights
Reviewed in the United States on November 1, 2024Like the Hart Sister’s Trilogy, I really enjoyed this book. It was a quick read and I would have finished it the day I started if real life didn’t get in the way.
Did I slightly hate Britt and Adrian when I dove into this? Yes. Do I think in the end they’re cute together? Also yes.
Do I now want to hang a bunch of Christmas lights in my living room even though Halloween was yesterday? 100% definitely.
If you’ve seen my reviews before you know I hate spoilers so I’m going to leave it at this:
This was a really cute holiday story and I definitely see myself hanging up a bunch of lights and rereading this around Christmas time.
Definitely read it.

Heartwarming and festive novella
Reviewed in the United States on November 18, 2024This is a heartwarming and festive novella that serves as a prequel to the Hart Sisters series. Set against the backdrop of the holiday season, this short story explores themes of love, redemption, and second chances.
The story centers on Britt, who distanced herself from her best friend Reese and Reese’s husband Adrian after realizing she had developed feelings for him. Fast forward six months after Reese and Adrian’s divorce, Adrian reenters Britt’s life to help her gather 100 boxes of Christmas lights for a middle school dance. What begins as a seemingly simple errand transforms into an emotional journey, as Britt and Adrian finally confront the feelings they've long suppressed.
Despite the story being really short, it delivers surprisingly well-rounded character development. The use of dual POV adds depth to both Britt and Adrian, allowing readers to understand their struggles, emotions, and mutual respect. Hopewell handles the potentially controversial "ex-best friend's ex-husband" trope with sensitivity, ensuring the relationship feels natural and respectful. There’s no betrayal here—just two people who are clearly meant to be together, finding love at the right time in their lives.
The holiday setting adds a cozy charm to the story, and small details, like the amusing names of Britt’s cats, add a touch of humor and personality. Although I enjoyed the fun Christmas light hunt, I felt the story could have leaned even more into the holiday spirit to amplify its Christmassy charm.
One Hundred Lights is a quick, sweet read perfect for fans of heartfelt Christmas romances. It’s a testament to how love can bloom in unexpected places and times, and it’s bound to leave you with a warm, festive glow.

Spicy Christmas!

Britt and Adrian are single parents. Britt used to be best friends with Adrian and his then wife Reese. I loved the banter and the spice but I don’t think the cheating but not really cheating trope is for me. Coupled with not being a girls’ girl and it’s your best friend and I’m out.
If none of that bothers you in a book and you can look at it as just a steamy holiday story, this is for you. It’s a prequel and I am going to read the other books since I really do like Chrissy Hopewell’s writing style. Super cute holiday cover too!

Entertaining!
Reviewed in the United States on November 4, 2024Britt is a headstrong working divorced mom that wants to make the Christmas dance a magical event for her son. Adrian is her ex-best friend's ex-husband for whom she discovered she had feelings and decided to sever connections. But life brings them together again when they go out to buy the lights that will shine on the dance. One Hundred Lights is an easy to read story with many fun remarks that although for some readers might imply cheating for me it just is a good Xmas story.
I thank the author for this ARC.
