Best MIC for a Small Budget!
Okay, first off, I didn't buy this MIC from Amazon, but from Best Buy. This MIC is a really good MIC in recording high quality, crisp sound, but sometimes when there is no dialogue, and there is an action that doesn't have much sound, like a door opening and closing, there can be quite a loud hiss in the background. This MIC is the best one for people in a budget like me and is very professional too! Here are 2 ways to prevent the hiss problem: 1.) Via CAMERA SETTINGS: Now I know that the GO mic doesn't have a -20db, but you can still lower the hiss through the camera audio recording settings! (My camera is a Canon, so setting titles may vary for different cameras, but I'm pretty sure Nikon has many of those same titles/names.) Step 1: Go to your camera's settings (via camera), and go to the tab that has the audio recordings. Step 2: Click on "Sound Recording" and put on "Manual" instead of "Auto". Step 3: Go down how much you need to, to reach "Rec. Level". Click on that. Step 4: Put the level around 5 or 6; go to the far end (left) of the level and click 5 or 6 times for it to go to the right. (contact me if you need more detail). This will lower the hiss sound, so the audio will be a clearer when you have dialogue or recording voiceover. 2.) Via EDITING SOFTWARE: (I use Final Cut Pro X and iMovie, so I'm sure any other editing software would have the audio effect if these two have it.) Step 1: Open your editing software. Step 2: Go to the "Effects" tab. Step 3: Click on the subcategory (if you have one): "Audio Effects" Step 4: Scroll down (if you have to) and find the tab "Levels" Step 5: Then, scroll down (if you have to again) and find the "Gain" effect. Step 5: Add that effect to your clip/audio and adjust the setting controls to "-20db" Now you have better sounding audio without having to buy the Rode MIC with the Gain controls on the MIC itself. ***I have attached pictures (for the Editing Software portion) to help along with the steps. If you still need help, don't hesitate to contact me!*** Hope this helps you decide what MIC to buy, and this one seems to be perfect if you are a freelance filmmaker, YouTube creator, or anyone with a tight budget :)

Decent mic for my 1st attempt at DSLR video. UPDATE. 2 years old, now a lot of background hissing.

Just remember that this mic does not use a battery, and is made primarily for DSLR's that provide power through the mic cable (Rode supplies a nice coiled one that does not get in your way). On that note, most DSLR's made today are compatible with this little gem. Check compatibility on Rode's website before purchase.

Setup is easy...just go on YouTube and search for a Rode Video Mic GO setup for your particular DSLR, since this is a popular microphone in use around the world. If you have a Canon or Nikon or other popular DSLR, somebody has already "been there, done that" and is willing to share their menu setup.

I had this set up and ready to go within minutes after receiving it in the mail and attaching it to a Canon EOS T5i, and made a quick test video to confirm the settings did work.

The cardioid pickup pattern is well-engineered. I literally performed the setup and marched out to record a Missoula Children's Theatre play for my kids, and the recorded sound was fine despite a generic auditorium that was built without stage performances in mind (i.e., the acoustics were built for lecture, not musical performance).

I bought this because I decided, on the spur of the moment, to try video with a camera that I no longer using regularly for school sports and activities (I have a Canon 5D Mk IV and Canon 1Ds Mk III for that). For a quickly cobbed-together combo of this mic and a Canon T5i DSLR, it did really well. I obviously have to use it more to get more out of this particular setup, but for a person like me who has never tried video with a DSLR, this mic proved to be a good choice.

UPDATE: 2 years old, and started delivering more and more background hissing after a year of use, no matter which camera body I used. This item did not last very long. I can remove the hiss in post production using software, but it’s just easier to buy a higher quality mic with its own power supply (a battery). It was decent while it lasted.

A Game Changer for On-Camera Audio!

I recently purchased the RØDE Auxiliary VideoMic GO Lightweight On-camera Shotgun Microphone, and I'm absolutely blown away by the difference it has made in my video production quality! As an aspiring content creator, I've always struggled with capturing clear and crisp audio directly from my camera, but this microphone has completely changed the game for me.

First and foremost, the lightweight design is perfect for my on-the-go filming style. It doesn't add any significant weight to my camera setup, making it ideal for long shooting sessions or when I'm out and about capturing various scenes. The setup was a breeze too – just plug it into the camera's audio input, and I was good to go!

The audio quality is where this microphone truly shines. The shotgun design allows it to focus on the sound directly in front of it while minimizing background noise. I was amazed at how it picked up even the slightest details in my recordings, whether I was filming interviews, tutorials, or outdoor shots. The result? Crystal clear audio that truly enhances the overall viewing experience.

One thing I was particularly impressed with is how well it handled outdoor recording. Wind noise can be a nightmare, but the built-in windscreen on this microphone did a fantastic job of minimizing those disturbances. This feature alone has saved me a ton of time in post-production, not having to deal with excessive wind interference.

Overall, the RØDE Auxiliary VideoMic GO microphone is a game changer for anyone looking to up their video and audio quality. The lightweight, easy-to-use design combined with outstanding audio performance make it an essential tool in my filmmaking kit. If you're serious about creating top-notch content, do yourself a favor and invest in this microphone – you won't be disappointed!

Arrived super fast! Easy to set up. Came with the 3.5 output (see pic) This is important because I was actually not sure it would based on the description. I thought I might have to purchase separately.

I did do a sound check and found it to be a better quality than just my camera. The improvement isn't huge, but good enough for my needs. Enhanced sound is always good when filming video and for the price point...I feel it was worth it.

I'm filming with a slightly older Canon T7 (still an amazing camera) in a closed set environment with the camera and mic station in place. It cleaned up the sound quality from sounding like you're in the bathroom...lol

This was a successful purchase and my first microphone from the Rode family. I most likely will purchase an upgraded Microphone with the Rode brand in the near future, because of this purchase being successful.

Plus: Simple set up (set your camera recording mode to manual) Turn the knob to loosen the shoe, slide the attached Rycote cradle over the shoe on camera and turn the knob to tighten. Finally put the 3.5 out into back of microphone and the other end into your camera mic. Good to go.

      Hope this was helpful💗

I recently purchased two of these for the company replace a slightly more expensive model that was weary and road worn (aka broken). A better price point than the next model up and I still get the same great quality. I had previously purchased another, cheaper brand, to initially replace and they worked all right, but the shock mounts broke so i replaced those with these. Like I said the sound quality is on par with the more expensive Rode that I had before and is superior to the cheaper brand I tried. This one is, however, a bit more sensitive than the cheaper ones and you'll need to adjust your input levels so you don't distort...yes, I learned this the hard way when the DJ cranked up the music! I love the shock mount, it is durable and won't dry rot like the rubber type bands on the older model I had or like on the cheaper brand. They work great and even look cool on the camera...I'm a visual person so that's important!

RØDE VideoMicGO is lightweight and perfect for starting video recordings!

This will give me a nice entry-level recording microphone that will sit on top of my Nikon D5300 mounted on a lightweight Targus tripod. Now the next thing I need is one of those easily adjustable ball head that will give me smooth panning when moving around.

With the lightweight VideoMic GO, I’m achieving my goal of keeping myself still portable.

I wanted a quality sound to be recorded from the camera and the on-mic that most DSLR have wouldn’t have done the job I wanted. The other option would have been to do a dub and sync the video to the audio. That to me sounded like more trouble than what it’s worth.

A few test of the recording and I’m satisfied with my purchase. Now, I didn’t really “purchase” and I also didn’t receive this as a review unit. I took part in a contest and I won a prize! I might be blogging about tech and do giveaways, but I also take part in others as well.

I wanted to let people know that this is a great buy for the price and it’s a great entry-level recording device that can be hooked up directly to your camera.

This will give me a nice entry-level recording microphone that will sit on top of my Nikon D5300 mounted on a lightweight Targus tripod. Now the next thing I need is one of those easily adjustable ball head that will give me smooth panning when moving around.

Avoid The Video Mic Go! You are playing the lotto with this purchase!

This mic has been nothing but trouble since day one. Every video that I create with this mic has had a intermittent clicking noise in it. The clicking sounds something like what you would get if you had your cell phone too close to your speakers. I have tried troubleshooting this issue for months! It has ruined several videos! I have tried just about everything settings wise, until I came across these suggestions by others who have had this problem. I tried the most popular suggestions, and to no avail.

      1. Some say it is too close to Wi-Fi and/or my cell phone, moved it away from those sources, same problem.

      2. Others say that the cord that comes with the mic sucks for some buyers and not for others. I replaced it with a 3rd party cord, and the issue still was present, but only sometimes.

      3. Lastly I though maybe it was the camera. I just tried it on a new Sony A7III (I was using the Panasonic G85) and I got the same issue!

This is so frustrating because the last video I did was one of the most important audio clips I have ever recorded and I am devastated that the sound issue still exists. Don't trust this mic with anything that is important to you!

I am convinced that some people end up with a awesome mic while others have gotten a bad batch! I'm done trying to troubleshoot this, time to switch to a brand that is more reliable, I can't risk another horrible sounding video. In my opinion sound is the most important part of any video. If I could choose 0 Stars for this review I would.

      Works with EOS M50 Camera

I have a canon eos m50 and like to film travel vlogs. The internal microphone of the camera is not great so I knew I needed a mountable microphone. I very much appreciate that the mic comes with a shock absorber that helps with people like me who are always walking while filming. The sound quality sounds that of a professional microphone and is crystal clear. I would recommend a wind shield to go over the mic if you are outside filming like me. The foam it comes with isn’t that great for diffusing the wind. Great mic for budget vloggers!

I watched so many youtube videos before ordering this mic and let me tell you the most common issue described in them was the hissing/clicking noise, let me tell you that has got nothing to do with the mic but with the pre-amp on your camera, when i tried recording through this mic to an external recorder there was no hiss/click noise whatsoever, also the noise cancellation on this one is pretty awesome especially when you are in moderately noisy environment, this is so good that it gives you near studio quality recording quality for the price. next is the manufacturer, Rode, they are awesome! i faced an issue regarding the tightening ring which was jammed when i received the product, but on me contacting Rode via e-mail & Twitter, they responded promptly suggesting a fix and it worked! they also sent me the number and address for their service centre near my location, which i did not have to visit as my issue was fixed. i highly recommend this microphone and i currently use it for recording directly into my DSLR and my phones where it works like a charm. One last piece of advise, since this item is non returnable on amazon, try buying it from an offline store near you as in case of any problem you will just be oscillating between amazon customer service and seller, who in my case was pathetic, other than that, Just go For it!!!

So far this mic has really impressed me! Admittedly all audio recordings I've done have been inside so far, so in regards to anyone complaining about it picking up wind noises, I cannot confirm that. But for my purposes, which so far is exclusive to recording indoors, I have literally no complaints. I use this on my Sony A6300 and it is noticeably better than my cheap Neewer 36cm mic I had previously. This mic would for sure mount into any mirrorless or DSLR camera hot shoe mount. And although I am recording on my tripod I can see how the design for the plastic that holds up the mic would benefit to those who are going to be recording while the camera is bumping around. It is a very well-built product and I know that Rode (Australian made) is a quality brand, so I was happy to pay the price for this mic. It's worth it. Even the packaging was nice. You get what you pay for, and for those looking for a good quality mic, look no further!
