The foundational and wildly popular go-to resource for influence and persuasion—a renowned international bestseller, with over 5 million copies sold—now revised adding: new research, new insights, new examples, and online applications.
In the new edition of this highly acclaimed bestseller, Robert Cialdini—New York Times bestselling author of Pre-Suasion and the seminal expert in the fields of influence and persuasion—explains the psychology of why people say yes and how to apply these insights ethically in business and everyday settings. Using memorable stories and relatable examples, Cialdini makes this crucially important subject surprisingly easy. With Cialdini as a guide, you don’t have to be a scientist to learn how to use this science.

A Fantastic Read for Insight
Reviewed in the United States on August 7, 2024I had a copy of this long ago, but lost it. Hence the new purchase. I wanted to re-read it. The author does a fantastic job of outlining the "click whirr" subconcious things people have in them, and how folks might try to take advantage of them. While the book is sort of geared towards sales and marketing folks that are trying to figure out what makes people "tick" in order to subconciously drive a sale or something, the author writes the book in a way to make it accessible to folks who just want to know these things and be aware of how they can be used against them by others. Once you read this book, you start listening and watching people interact with you differently. You start to pickup on the cues they use to try to get one of your subconcious "click whirr" autonomous functions to trigger. And, then, b/c you notice it, you can counteract it by conciously deciding to not go along with it when you might have subconciously done so in the past without this knowledge. I worked in marketing/sales analytics for almost a decade, and that's when I first read this book. And, I was able to see through all the marketing / sales pitches and what-not after doing so. It helped me realize I was dealing with predatory sales people, and walk away from awful deals they were trying to push me into. It helps you understand how they might prey upon you, so you have better awareness and defense to it. It's a fascinating book from a psychology and sociology aspect, but also a very useful and functional "training manual" to prep you to see beyond the sales pitches and protect yourself.

The structure of this book is built on practical and effective ideas.
Reviewed in the United States on March 6, 2026This book offers a clear and practical understanding of why people make mistakes in business and everyday decisions. What I appreciated most was the use of real-world examples, including modern companies, which made the concepts easier to relate to.
The chapters are well structured, and the visuals inside the book help reinforce the ideas being explained. It also shows pictures related to the subjects and moral, which makes whatever one reads really interesting.

A Fantastic Book with Lot of Information. A must add to any professional development library!!!
Reviewed in the United States on May 4, 2023This i really a fantastic book. I came across it by way of another book I was reading. There's great information on to influence as well as how we've all been influenced. There are all kinds of examples provided in the book, those from history as well as from the author's personal life experiences. My only issue with this book is there is lot of information and sometimes the chapters seem to drag on. Hence why I only gave 4 stars. I wish Amazon would implement the 1/2 star concept in it's customer review feature. In all honesty, the book deserves 4 1/2 stars. But overall, a must have for your library.

Reviewed in the United States on February 27, 2026A great read that gives you the information needed to understand certain daily situations, how to identify them and how to maybe have a defense if you are the target of some sales people.
Everybody should read it as part of their formation.
Thanks Mr. Cialdini.

A well documented and thoughtful book on persuasion
Reviewed in the United States on December 19, 2025I read this book because it is recommended by kindlepreneur as a good marketing theory book. I had previously read “Tribes” and was not impressed. “Influence” is everything that tribes is not. It has a well defined, thoughtful idea progression from start to finish. Every story or study mentioned is cited. The writing style is polished and engaging. I feel like if I can assimilate the information in this book I will be a more persuasive person.

Danny K5 out of 5 starsNew edition fully expanded and improved
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 17, 2022Cialdini provides the professionalism and scientific rigour of Kahneman with the fun and accessibility of Gladwell.
Having read an early edition of ‘Influence’ I was surprised not least at the difference in the sizes of the books. This book builds significantly on the contents of the previous editions.
Cialdini is an academic, a practical field researcher and a master at translating some complex psychological phenomena in to accessible and easily understood principles.
Not only does this book add a new principle ’unity’ that was not part of the original text, but he also devoted a healthy section of each section on how to identify and if necessary offer resistance to the principles when they are being used against you.
There are a range of examples and anecdotes to illustrate the points being made. From there it’s up to you as the reader and you can consider how you may be able to make use of these principles ethically in your personal or professional life.
If you have ever heard yourself say, I like people watching, psychology fascinated me or ‘why did he/she do that’ then this book could shine a light of understanding into your world. You may even learn something about yourself.
