The Invisible Boy
Purchase options and add-ons
A gentle story that teaches how small acts of kindness can help children feel included and allow them to flourish, from esteemed author and speaker Trudy Ludwig and acclaimed illustrator Patrice Barton.
A simple act of kindness can transform an invisible boy into a friend...
Meet Brian, the invisible boy. Nobody in class ever seems to notice him or think to include him in their group, game, or birthday party . . . until, that is, a new kid comes to class.
When Justin, the new boy, arrives, Brian is the first to make him feel welcome. And when Brian and Justin team up to work on a class project together, Brian finds a way to shine.
Any parent, teacher, or counselor looking for material that sensitively addresses the needs of quieter children will find The Invisible Boy a valuable and important resource. Includes a discussion guide and resources for further reading.

Review
"This is a simple yet heartfelt story.” —School Library Journal, starred review
"Tender illustrations rendered in glowing hues capture Brian’s isolation deftly...Accessible, reassuring and hopeful." —Kirkus Reviews
"Ludwig and Barton understand classroom dynamics...They portray Brian’s situation as a matter of groupthink that can be rebooted through small steps. It’s a smart strategy, one that can be leveraged through the book’s excellent discussion guide."
—Publishers Weekly
"Trudy Ludwig has given us the gift of another empathic, poignant book for children that addresses the complex topic of peer relationships...A must-read."

About the authors

My artistic talents were first discovered at the age of three, when I was found creating a mural on the dining room wall with a pastry brush and a can of Crisco. Although the work itself was never fully appreciated by my parents, my interest in art was. They quickly gave me a better canvas and more appropriate supplies. My passion for art grew, and I earned a BFA in studio art from the University of Texas in Austin, where I live now with my husband, son and good dog Archer.
My clients include Alfred A. Knopf, G.P. Putnam's Sons, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, Harper Collins, Atheneum, Dial, Roaring Brook Press, Farrar, Straus and Giroux Books for Young Readers, Scholastic Book Club, Ideals Children's Books, Ladybug Magazine, Clubhouse Jr. Magazine, Highlights, Highlights High Five, and more.

Great for encouraging inclusion!
Reviewed in the United States on March 15, 2026My 4 year olds preschool class kept leaving certain friends out when they played. We read this book and it helped him to imagine when that happens it makes the other friend feel “invisible” like in the book! Highly recommend. It is great for ages 4-10!
I enjoyed it too!

wonderful story for grades K-4
Reviewed in the United States on December 15, 2023I love this book. I hope it gets to be a classic one of these days. It's all about a quiet little boy who is ignored by his classmates and even his teacher. The creative use of color by the illustrator as the story goes on lends this book to great discussions about reality vs. fantasy--"Is the little boy really invisible?" what it means to be invisible and how we treat each other. Every time I read it to classrooms in K-4, I get quite the emotional responses from kids, and they are captivated by this story. It's beautifully written and illustrated. (Retired special ed teacher)

Includes characters of color as normal kids
Reviewed in the United States on September 8, 2020I love so many things about this book, but one thing I particularly appreciate is how she shows minority students as normal kids. I understand that there need to be books about kids with family from China and their unique Chinese-American struggles, but there also need to be books about Asian-American kids who are just regular kids. I also appreciate that the Asian kid in this story is not "The Asian Kid" in the way that so much media portrays them: geeky, recently immigrated, the sidekick, quiet, passive, etc. Nothing wrong with those traits-- it's just that we need to show more characteristics than JUST those. I appreciate seeing an Asian kid as a normal, confident, considerate, and thoughtful leader who can both be a regular American kid while being proud of his ethnic background.
The symbolism with the color was also very touching! Loved the illustrations and artwork, and have been recommending this book to my friends! If I were still teaching in the classroom, it would be one of the books I kept on display all year!
