My Friend Bernard
Purchase options and add-ons
My Friend Bernard is a story about neurodiversity, acceptance, and friendship. This story is not told in a traditional way; instead, it is a series of windows into the friendship between the two main characters. This story is narrated by a young boy, telling the reader about his new friend. This book aims to showcase neurodiverse characters in a manner that is non-judgmental, realistic, positive, and possibly informative.
Bernard is new at school and is befriended by another child in his class. The reader is provided with glimpses into their friendship, social struggles, communication differences, and compassion towards one another. This is an important story as it is one many children can relate to themselves or others in their lives. This type of story is not one commonly told, and hopefully, many can find meaning in the words and artwork.

An Important Story About Friendship
Reviewed in the United States on February 17, 2026Ms. O’Connor is clearly well-versed in working with neurodivergent youth. "My Friend Bernard" feels authentic, compassionate, and refreshingly real. Every one of us knows a Bernard, and this story offers a beautiful way for parents and children to understand that neurodivergent kids are still just kids, just sometimes with a few extra settings.
I especially loved the artwork. It appears to have been drawn in crayon by the narrator themself, which adds a layer of immersion and sincerity that perfectly matches the tone of the story. It feels personal, honest, and heartfelt.
I’m truly looking forward to her next offering.

A Heartwarming Book About Friendship and Acceptance
Reviewed in the United States on March 7, 2026I really enjoyed My Friend Bernard. It’s a simple but very meaningful story about friendship and learning to understand someone who experiences the world a little differently. I appreciated how the book presents neurodiversity in a positive and natural way without feeling heavy-handed. The moments between the two boys feel genuine and show how patience, kindness, and curiosity can help build real connections. It’s a thoughtful book that encourages empathy and would be a great addition to any child’s bookshelf or classroom.
