Until his initial irritation with this mysterious online persona flips when Noel gets support from Faded. From the Author

This book was quite a challenge for me.

I put my first words of
With His Words I'm Not Alone on the paper on September 6, 2022, three years before its launch date.

Lots of things happened during that time in my life. Lots of trials, stress and tears, anxiety and fears, which brought me to a standstill only to shoot me into the orbit of hyperactive writing and editing a few days or weeks later. I even changed one word in its title!

Since I don't use artificial intelligence (AI) to come up with ideas for my characters, plot and the setting, or help me with my writing (or write a story for me!), the entire process of producing this book took much longer, in a natural way. But this was the right way for me, and it will be so for my next book.

I speak a lot about AI in
With His Words I'm Not Alone and raise the question of morality of using it in creating and writing books, that is of leaving the option to the readers whether they want to read AI-created stories, but I didn't use it in mine. Although I have a reasonable fear that our society will become dumber and lazier as AI penetrates deeper into our everyday activities, I am also not fully against it when it helps us to better organize our time and ourselves, and with activities authors in the past haven't been doing and shouldn't be doing. But times have changed, and being an author today is like performing a one-man show, which includes not only writing books but also producing, financing, marketing, and selling them. Fun time indeed!

When I came up with the idea for
With His Words I'm Not Alone, it was supposed to be a literary fiction LGBTQ+ story, but not a romance. However, as with every deeply pondered story, it took its own course, deciding that it wouldn't only moralize about certain aspects of our society and living, but dress itself in its romance gown as well.

Which is okay with me, and which is why I submitted to its desire and wish. Maybe it is because as you grow older you are less into action and adrenaline and more into intimacy, support, and respect. Who knows?

Saying all that, if you like character-driven and relationship-building fiction with the tropes I will mention below, this story will hit home for you. If you are looking for something steamy, erotic, and spicy, though, it may not be the perfect choice for you. Unless you find intellectual and emotional romance also hot. And believe me, it
can be hot!

Either way, I hope this unconventional and challenging love story will breathe a little freshness into your expectations and romance as you know it.

Much love and happy reading,

Lucas

“With His Words I’m Not Alone” By Lucas Ryker ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I could not imagine going through life with the fear of being touched or the fear of being alone. That is Noel Walkers fear. He’s also an author that is dealing with slump books sales. Then one day a reader, a fan reaches out to him on Twitter. Noel find it’s wired and thrown off with “Hey Daddy.” In this book we follow how this relationship grows and changes, and evolves into something… We also follow how Noel deals with his phobia of being touched and his fear of being alone. There were a few times I had to sit back and reflect on how I would feel if I had the phobia. I know the fear of loneliness. I deal with it now. It’s a book I very much recommend.

I didn’t expect this story to hit me the way it did. Noel’s fear of touch and loneliness felt painfully real. The online connection with Faded started out strange but slowly became something tender and meaningful. I loved how the relationship grew through words before anything else. It stayed with me long after I finished reading.

    An impressive debut novel

For a debut novel, With His Words I’m Not Alone is an impressive start. It’s a bit of a slow-burner, but well worth giving it time as the character development builds up, with notable emotional impact.

The writing style is of high quality, occasionally having me dig into the dictionary for the wealth of words it uses.

The main character, Noel, lives a rather reclusive life with just his pets, and facing his challenges with post-traumatic stress disorder. Yet he yearns for a relationship with intimacy, human interaction.

Then, online, he begins a new relationship with Faded, who changes his life completely.

Clearly a LGBTQ+ novel, this is a recommended book for those enjoying this genre.

You need to read this book!

Honestly, I'm not a Romance reader, let alone a slow-burn Romance reader, and especially not a "clean" Romance reader. But! This book is certainly the exception. The couple in this novel doesn't even touch each other, for Gods' sake! Let me explain...

Noel is a writer; he has published a couple of books that haven't done very well, and he decides to take a chance and start working full-time in marketing his books and start writing articles to try and reel in new readers, but he chose to do this with the help of a brand new shiny tool: AI. There's a great exploration here on this controversial theme, but let's focus on the Romance.

Noel suffers from haphephobia (fear of getting touched by people) and also monophobia (fear of being alone), which makes his social life almost nonexistent, with the exception of his best friend Marsha and her son Xavier, until Faded pops up with his "Hey Daddy" and starts to upend his world.

Faded starts as this annoying, borderline stalker, anonymous texter. He's a bit too sexual and uninhibited for Noel, but he turns out to be quite a great helper, and even goes as far as being an emotional support to Noel as he starts to open up more and more to him.

Their entire relationship is utterly fascinating. Faded knows that he won't be able to touch Noel, and Noel understands that Faded is a persona of an original person out there, yet they make such an extraordinary connection, to the point that they're both willing to explore a relationship without physical touch. It's so refreshing to contemplate! Especially for 2 Queer men with the desire for sex.

The other source of media that I know explores a similar relationship is Chobits by CLAMP.

    I'm inordinately impressed.

This book is charming and heartfelt. Noel’s fears and insecurities are written in a way that made me empathize with him. Faded’s presence challenges and comforts him in equal measure. The romance feels genuine and slow-burning, which I appreciated. I would recommend this to anyone looking for LGBTQ literary fiction with depth.

    Book Review: Noel and Faded

I was provided an ARC which in no way influenced any of my thoughts and comments. In Noel and Faded, readers are drawn into a heartfelt and introspective journey that blends queer romance, literary ambition, and the vulnerabilities of human connection in the digital age. Lucas Ryker crafts a quietly powerful story about isolation, emotional barriers, and the unexpected ways technology can both divide and unite us.

Noel Walker is not your typical romantic lead. Plagued by a fear of touch, a deep sense of loneliness, and the frustrating reality of underwhelming book sales, Noel has settled into a life of quiet, guarded routine. That is, until someone with the mysterious online alias “Faded” enters his life—uninvited and persistent, tagging him with two playful, jarring words: “Hey Daddy.”

At first, Faded’s messages are an annoyance, an intrusion into Noel’s carefully constructed emotional distance. But as the interactions deepen, something unexpected happens: Noel begins to need the connection. Faded offers more than flirtation—they offer understanding, validation, and even support with Noel’s complicated feelings about using AI as a writing tool. Slowly, a genuine intimacy blossoms through the screen.

The novel explores their evolving relationship with nuance and tenderness, building from irritation to intrigue to something that feels surprisingly vital and raw. And when Faded’s identity begins to surface, the tension rises: can the emotional bond survive when the truth is laid bare?

Noel and Faded is a compelling piece of LGBTQ literary fiction that takes its time unfolding, prioritizing character growth and emotional honesty over flashy plot twists. It’s a novel about masks—both digital and personal—and the courage it takes to remove them. With a subtle mystery element, authentic dialogue, and a romance that simmers with slow-burn intensity, this is a story for readers who crave connection and complexity.

    Final Thoughts:

If you're drawn to character-driven queer fiction with a dash of intrigue, themes of mental health, and an honest exploration of love in the digital era, Noel and Faded should be next on your reading list. It's a quiet triumph of emotion and voice—intimate, brave, and beautifully real.

    When Silence Speaks
Reviewed in the United States on September 18, 2025
Brief content visible, double tap to read full content.
Full content visible, double tap to read brief content.

On the surface, queer literature is crowded with characters like Noel Walker—isolated, anxious, phobic, watching their spark fade in a world that rarely makes space for quiet pain. But it takes a true artist to turn a well-worn trope into something electric. Just as it takes a strong person to embrace the queer life in all its paradoxes.

Under Lukas Ryker’s pen, Noel’s world becomes more than dark—it becomes intimate. We don’t just observe his despair; we inhabit it. We feel the weight of his silence, the ache of his isolation, and the fragile hope tucked inside every sentence he writes.

Then, in the 21st-century version of an obscene phone call, Faded appears—dropping notes into Noel’s DMs with unsettling familiarity. Noel doesn’t realize it at first, but his later choices reveal the truth: even though the messages disturbed him, they mattered. Maybe what felt like intrusion was actually attraction. Maybe silence was the first sign of surrender.

Ryker’s mastery lies not just in the prose, but in the emotional architecture. He builds tension from omission, intimacy from ambiguity, and connection from discomfort. This is not just a novel—it’s a mirror held up to the digital age, where loneliness and longing blur into something hauntingly beautiful.

    Author’s Note

Unlike some writers who we won't mention, I acknowledge that I ran my comments through AI for a final polish. That doesn’t make these thoughts—or the insights behind them—any less my own. If anything, it reflects the very tension Ryker explores: how digital tools can amplify human emotion, not replace it. The words are mine. The polish is modern. The sentiment is real.

I received a free copy of this book for an ARC read. I received no compensation or other renumeration in exchange for this review.

    Love Can Be Unconventional Too

What an unexpectedly enjoyable read. Lucas does a great job crafting a more unconventional love story centered around a man with a strong aversion to human touch - though, aversion might be too light a word since it’s more of a phobia. Noel’s life has not been easy and his future has always seemed like it might be a lonely one because of his condition, so when he starts receiving messages from Faded online professing his love for him, suddenly things don’t seem so bleak.

Noel is complex and for most people, he’s strange, but he’s been okay with that because he has his rescue dog and his robot cat to keep him company. As he spends more time with his best friend, Marsha and her son, Javier, little moments of joy start to permeate his life, while conversations with the mysterious Faded continue to bring him hope and comfort. As his comfort grows with Faded, he starts to entertain the idea that maybe he could one day stand to touch Faded at least. When Faded’s identity is revealed, Noel has the choice to make of shutting him out, or letting down some of his boundaries to embrace an extraordinary life with a man he never thought he might need someday.

I adored Noel and the other characters. There were complexities that felt realistic, and complicated emotions getting tangled up in everything, which only added to the believability in the story. While maybe a little slow to start, the story eventually finds its footing and the pace flows smoothly and quickly to an end I only wish could be a little longer so we have the chance to enjoy the fruits of Noel’s labor. In a world riddled with smut (no shame, I love my smut), it’s refreshing to read an adult romance that doesn’t rely on the shock factor of sex scenes to make you root for the characters and melt you heart as they slowly fall for each other.

I enjoyed the story, would definitely recommend, and look forward to more from Lucas Ryker in the future.
