The Puppet Throne: An Adventure Fantasy Begins (Puppet Throne Trilogy Book 1)
For ten years, Queen Zeren of Izakura has ruled in name alone—her will bound by the dark magic of the Tricilium, a council of three who decide her every action. Beyond the capital, she is feared as a tyrant, blamed for atrocities she never chose.
Within the palace, only one person sees the truth.
When Zeren’s maid uncovers a plot that threatens the queen’s life, the two are forced into a choice neither can afford to make but also cannot refuse. Together, they flee the throne that was never truly hers.
Beyond the palace walls lies a world shaped by Zeren’s name—and scarred by it. To survive, she must rely on uneasy allies, including a crown prince whose loyalties are far from certain.
As they cross lands that curse her rule, the weight of what was done in her name becomes impossible to ignore. The people want justice. The rebels want blood. And the Tricilium will not allow their puppet to remain free.
For the first time in her life, Zeren must decide for herself.
Who to trust.
What to believe.
And what it means to live with the consequences of a crown she never truly wore.
The Puppet Throne is the first book in a dark political fantasy trilogy where power is controlled, freedom is dangerous, and every choice carries a cost.
Although set in the same world as Shields of Seiflands, this trilogy can be read independently.

Awesome
Reviewed in the United States on February 28, 2026This picks up a story that was started in the last trilogy with Aethan now in Izakura looking to meet the queen but not knowing why his father sent him there. We begin by meeting Zeren and her Tricilium in the midst of a tragedy. She has no choice but to lead her people and as a teenager is ill equipped to do so. She allows the Tricilium to govern for her until she is ready by making that announcement to her counsel. From that moment forward everything is not what she expected. The political machinations and direct consequences are wild to say the least. Will Prince Aethan get to meet the queen he has heard so much about? Will Zeren be able to lead her people? All of this and so much more awaits. Highly recommended with great world and character building was really great and I am looking forward to the next installment!

The puppet cuts the strings!
Reviewed in the United States on September 1, 2025As the 1st book of a planned trilogy, this story sets out the characters, defines the challenges they face, & describes the world in which the whole thing happens. The main character Zeren, to whom we're introduced when she is a child who inherited a throne when her entire family was murdered, is the puppet of the title. She is kept in place for years by the Tricilium, a council of three, made up of Deonar, a powerful mage, Lord Navud, her uncle, & his lover, Lady Karena. They completely control her via threats to kill her only friend if she doesn't exactly follow their instructions. The other main characters for this tale are Hena, her only friend & attendant, Prince Aethan, a young royal from Greylan (an adjoining land) & Bhaira, another mage living quietly in Heisera. The world is a typical one, more like medieval Europe than anywhere modern, The action starts when, after 10 years of bondage, Zeren & Hena escape the palace & the Tricilium but, through misadventures, end up in Heisera, a part of Zeren's kingdom being terrorized by Jharile, another powerful mage & cohort of Deonar. In Heisera, Zeren realizes how her people are being brutalized by the Tricilium, & decides to fight to regain control of her land. She is aided in her efforts when she discovers that she, too, is a powerful mage, but must learn how to use her gifts, luckily Bhaira begins teaching her. The story ends, as expected, with a cliff-hanger, after Zeren & the villagers begin their fight for freedom. The story contains all the fantasy tropes expected in this type of tale, and it is rather exciting & fairly well written. I found some of the language used (e.g. vernaculars like scram) to be rather ridiculous, but overall, it's an interesting adventure, & I particularly liked that the females herein mostly had agency. It's a nice change.

Splendid
Reviewed in the United States on September 4, 2025This story was refreshingly original. I have not previously read a story with a similar story line. There are various characters, all of whom could be considered main characters as they held strong personalities and importance in the story. There were several twists and turns that helped the story to move along. I enjoyed every part of the story, there were no slow moments, it moved along quickly. I look forward to reading the next in the series. I voluntarily reviewed this book after receiving a free copy.

Good story
Reviewed in the United States on September 30, 2025It did take me some pages to get into the story. But once I got into the story, I didn't want to put the book done. It's well written. I find the details in the book very good, which makes it easy to read. The story flows easily through the book,

So, when is the next book coming out? I want more!
Reviewed in the United States on August 29, 2025I loved this book, the characters are all fascinating with realistic, diverse, and in some cases absolutely vile personalities. Queen Zeren of Izakua is little more than a figure head, while the Tricilium hold all the power. Zeren's only friend is her maid, Hena. When Hena discovers a deadly plot against her queen, and her only family she puts into motion a plan that will lead to their escape from the palace. There is a lot of violence and bloodshed in this book as well as magic, political corruption, murder and torture. Plenty of twists in the plot kept me engrossed in this book. I highly recommend this fantastic book to other readers.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary ARC provided by Hidden Germs.

A royal puppet
Reviewed in the United States on August 27, 2025An interesting story about a young queen who is held in check by her councilors, a mere puppet who must go along with whatever they say. After escaping her captors, she discovers that they have done things that made the people hate her. What must she do to correct the situation? Nicely depicted characters, intriguing situation. Well worth the read.

Great start to a new series!
Reviewed in the United States on September 1, 2025This author continues to improve with each book! I really enjoyed getting to know Prince Aethan in this book and seeing him grow a bit more. Romance in this book is only a small subplot, so if you are looking for a book where the romance is the main story....you may be disappointed. However, if you like political intrigue, rebellion, standing up to the bullies, found inner strength and power, with a slice of romance on the side, then you will want to read this book!
Overall, I liked this story a lot and I'm so looking forward to the next book!
*Disclaimer: As a Christian I want other readers to be aware that this book mentions 2 women that seem to be in a same-sex relationship. However, it is near the end of the book, is a very small mention, and there is no description of them being affectionate with each other. Since it was so subtle, I don't have a problem reading it, but others might and I want those readers to be aware.
