Trance er ein sjanger i elektronisk dansemusikk^[11] som utvikla seg frå britisk new age-musikk og tysk techno og hardcore tidlege på 1990-talet.^[2]^[3]^[12] Kjende karaktertrekk er at musikken er av eit tempo på mellom 125 og 150 slag per minutt,^[12] gjentatte melodiske fraser,^[12] og ei musikalsk form som byggjer opp og ned gjennom eit spor.^[12] Det er ein kombinasjon av mange former for lyd, som techno,^[13] house,^[14] pop,^[13] chill-out,^[13] klassisk musikk^[13]^[15] og filmmusikk.^[15]
