It's kind of a shame that we're basically getting a prequel in reality... can't wait to buy a PC dedicated to my best ai buddy so it can tell me what to think so I don't have to because that's what our wise technocrats know is best for us.

I'll call it Shoddo and I'm sure it will all go splendidly, far far better than in System Shock 1.1x

Stayed true to the original but with a modern twist. I love all the attention to details including the manual.pdf. I can understand that young gamers who did not come from the previous era expecting a FPS may not like the combat, cyberspace nor the retro textures but I think it is mainly an expectation being set. Just know that we are all fortunate to be able to replay a classic, experience Citadel Station and Shodan in a modern PC. I am thankful. Good job, NightDive!

I don't know, it just doesn't click. I couldn't bother to finish this game in two tries, even though I've beaten both regular and enhanced versions of the 1994 installment.

Detailed Citadel Station in all its glory and abomination. Great.
Original SHODAN VA returned to redo classical voice lines and flesh her out more. Wonderful, wish more developers did this.
No more hunting for a 3x3 pixel button on a funky textured 2D wall. And thank goodness.
Physical puzzles. Neat.

Yet a lot was lost in translation.

This will sound incredibly stupid, but the thing I miss the most is cyberspace. Yes, it sucked. Yes, it was objectively one of the worst parts of the game, and I heard most of the players despised it at the time. When people imagine human-perceived world that's happening inside computer guts, they think of something more coherent, flashy, organized. Like computer world in TRON 2.0, released in 2003. In this version of the System Shock, it is more or less the same, visually. Arcade game nested inside immersive sim, with a sprinkle of FPS in the end, and nothing more. Only thing that stays with you is a banger sound tune. And that makes me just sad, when I compare it to the OG cyberspace.
Speaking of that, 1994 cyberspace is a local-access net that acts as a virtual extension of a corporate science station. Barren, hostile to human mind, and, above all else - utilitarian, like Citadel Station itself (there's in-game lore reason it was made that way, btw). In my opinion that's the whole point. I personally was able to see past vector graphics and 6DOF low FoV pukotron because I kept spinning in a hamster wheel of Descent: Freespace and Ace Combat X in my teen years.
Still, that OG final boss "battle" is unredeemable, no matter how you look.

They are distracting at best and infuriating at worst. Inventory system is straight from the System Shock 2 or, to take more modern example, Deus Ex: Human Revolution - grid with the ability to assign certain items to a numerical hotbar. The game incentivizes you to vacuum every shelf and box for scrap metal so you can get company scrip. All of it takes time, running around station, hauling trash/scrap/scrip until the next recycler/vendor, and, what's worse: extremely limited inventory space. In this modern release having 4 weapons on yourself is a luxury. Patches and batteries take space. Ammo takes space. And you need that scrip because you need it for upgrade vendors. Also certain upgrades make weapons bulkier. The game turns into a constant juggling act where you have to manage your toolbox every new room, even if you have general idea what to expect taking magpulse to the executive while having loads of incendiary ammo and detox patches on the way to beta grove.
OG version gave you an expansive, albeit redundant at times, toolbox - 8 weapon slots, general inventory for stuff like quest items, batteries, first aid kits and logic probes, and reserved slots for grenades and patches. Over the course of the game you build your toolbox into a robust Swiss army knife for every situation: fodder/armored/robotic/organic enemies, expected ambushes, panic button (10 frags upon ye). You juggle weapons not only for increased efficiency, but also because enemies drop their own specific types of ammo. Everything you need was confined to a couple of clunky menus and your physical body (for the most part). And so the game wasn't afraid to play "DOOM"-like dirty: to throw you in deadly traps, to make you fight for every station tile. Because devs knew you had the tools to help you handle it. All this created a game loop that was more satisfying to me that the one in this remake.

Now here are couple of tidbits that are more subjective.
The first one is the soundtrack. When I first listened to the official soundtrack release, I was quite surprised. At first, I enjoyed recognizing level motives from the classic version of the game, and how the tug war between SHODAN and hacker protagonist was represented in synths and guitar fighting for the focus in the sound mix.
But then, I was dumbfounded. I realized that I listened for the melodies I haven't heard even once in the game. All that was in the game was basic drones during the calm areas and fast paced synth rhythms during combat. And nothing else (well, maybe except elevator and cyberspace, to be pedantic). This weird dynamic soundtrack issue was fixed in 2.1 version apparently, but I didn't bother to launch the game and see if that's the case. If it was: good job. Strange, that it took so long to fix it though.

The second one is storyline adjustment, Edward Diego, and how concept of cyberpunk changed over the years. And also spoilers for the story, so feel free to skip this part if you want.

Compared to the classic version, story of the remake goes more to the... religious connotations? I struggle to express my opinion.
Let me put it that way: OG story was textbook cyberpunk. True evil of System Shock is not SHODAN, but Tri-Op. Ruthless corpo that through their hubris and greed created and then unleashed something they didn't even bother to understand until it was too late. Edward Diego in this story is a scummy executive who used already nefarious station research in bioweapons and military robotics for personal gain. When he got a reality check from unshackled SHODAN that showed him who truly was in charge, he turned into a slavering pest and betrayed the station personnel on the spot.
The remake Diego, however, is now more of a preachy AI-techbro type of guy. Still an evil exec at his core, but with massive delusions of grandeur compared to the OG arrogant "see ya, suckers!" attitude. And in the same confrontation with SHODAN, he doesn't fold. He kneels, sharing SHODAN's insane ramblings of her divinity and humanity's place in the her new world order. So there's now a cult of SHODAN on the station, with sacrificial rituals.

Voice acting is also thing that made me thing this way. Remake Diego is well-articulated, speaks with conviction, and VA acts more professional. Classic Diego voice was a dude from studio who read lines from paper, which gave him this nonchalant douche aura.

In a way, SHODAN takeover of the Citadel was the final incision that amputated already withering humanity from the Tri-Optimum. Adaptability and brilliance of a human mind grafted with the ruthlessness and efficiency of a machine. Something that the Hacker defies with every second of his mere existence on the Citadel,
In the remake this graft is forced, imperfect: enemies beg you to end their suffering and thank you when you do the deed. Diego, already a cyborg at that point, hinted by signature modulated drone that is present in every SHODAN voice transmission, tries to reason first with the remaining crew, and then, once they are done for, the Hacker, once they make their presence known. Bioorganic growth turns into murals. Material submission is transformed into a ideological subversion. The nightmares of industrialized human slaughter Tri-Op was creating in cold blood for the pursuit of profit, with SHODAN gain a higher purpose. Greater meaning.

Is it a cyberpunk story at this point? I have no idea. Is it the same story? Yes, yet I can't help but think that something was lost. Something important, what made playing System Shock a formative experience.

There's also this design change, most noticeable in appearance of Edward Diego. New Diego looks to me like he was taken from Arcane Studios game - Dishonored. Art Deco style of the more posh parts of the Citadel is far more pronounced in the remake (ahem, Prey from the same studio). It is too... meta, lets put it that way. Nothing wrong with that, but makes me feel in an odd way.

If you can handle Enhanced Edition of 1994 game, go play it instead. If not, this is second best option.
