In 1956, he was nominated for an Academy Award for his role in "Friendly Persuasion," but his first major role came the following year when he portrayed baseball player Jimmy Piersall in "Fear Strikes Out" (1957). In 1960, he was Jane Fonda's first leading man in "Tall Story." Other prominent film roles include "The Matchmaker" (1958), "On the Beach" (1959), "Catch-22" (1970), "The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean" (1972), "Murder on the Orient Express" (1974), "Mahogany" (1975) and "Crimes of Passion" (1984). Anthony Perkins was Diagnosed with the Human immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) in 1986 and became an AIDS activist until his death in 1992. However, his name will always be synonymous with his most famous role, the sociopath 'Norman Bates' in Alfred Hitchcock's film classic "Psycho" (1960), a role he would recreate in three sequels between 1983 and 1990. His widow was a 9/11 victim as she was aboard American Airlines Flight 11.
