I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but, since it was directed by Yorgos Lanthimos and since it had been rather well received, I was quite eager to check it out. By now, I’m rather familiar with his work, it can be rather challenging and this movie was no different. However, this time, he went for a very minimalistic approach as most of the action took place in one place, there were only 3 characters involved but I always had a weak spot for such movies. Furthermore, for such minimalistic movies, to really work, you need some really strong actors and it was definitely the case here (Jesse Plemons, Emma Stone and newcomer Aidan Delbis). Another important aspect is that you need to connect with the material and the characters and, in this area, I was eventually intrigued but, to be honest, I was not really fascinated though. I mean, our world is getting increasingly polarized and such conspiracy theories are basically a disease sucking the life of such instable poor souls so it was interesting to dive into the really f*cked-up world of one of them. In fact, the super-rich CEO brilliantly played by Emma Stone was not much better after all so it gave a rather dark and grim view on the current state of our world. I did appreciate that, in spite of the outlandish ideas developed by Teddy, everything was actually really down-to-earth and it was probably the most realistic movie delivered by Lanthimos which was a nice change of pace… up until the end of course. Indeed, during the last act, we were back into the typical absurdism that Lanthimos has delivered in his previous movies and, well, it is really an acquired taste. As far as I was concerned, to be honest, I didn’t really like it at all. Indeed, I really liked the realistic approach they took concerning conspiracy theories and this ending, even if it probably shouldn’t be taken too literally, pretty much validated all the completely messed-up theories developed by Teddy and I thought it was actually more nauseating than entertaining. Anyway, to conclude, except for the ending, it was actually a decent watch and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in Yorgos Lanthimos’ work.
