Our new parish deacon had an excellent first homily yesterday, and I will try to relay the essence of it.

He traced the history of Israel as a nation in the Old Testament. At its beginning they were God’s people, with no king, but only following God’s will and trusting in Him to protect them and to give them victory over their enemies. But after time, they fell into error and disobedience and disunity (check out the Book of Judges for the scandalous details), and the people of Israel begged the prophet Samuel to ask God to send them a king to unite them. So Samuel anointed Saul as king, but that soon went wrong.(Samuel:God said no looting and kill the witch-king!)
