While in the West Australian goldfields, I tracked down the Darling Downs’ most successful builder of the last two centuries with connections to the US president. Exactly 100 years ago this year, these two locations in the Australian Goldfields were central to the most evil murders of serving policemen in Australian history. I went to Fremantle in Western Australia to visit the hotel that accommodated the survivors of a shipwreck 116 years ago. I found an incredibly rewarding story.
