Reopening of CMR….RMC Club President… Pierre Ducharme

The RMC Club of Canada was pleased with the announcement of the Minister of National Defence regarding the re-opening of the Collège Militaire Royal de Saint-Jean last week.Since its closing in 1995, the site of CMR has continually welcomed Officer Cadets from several Canadian provinces needing to complete a preparatory year before entering the Royal Military College of Canada in Kingston. With the addition of a second year to that program, CMR will once again be a diploma granting institution.
The Club has learned the following details with regards to the implementation of this decision:

What’s Happening At RMC | Wue se passe-t-il au CMR?

Many Ex cadets will be pleased to hear the news that LCol AJ “Tony” O’Keeffe is posted back to RMC. Tony served at the college during a good part of the 1990s in a variety of positions. He is well known as a member of the Canadian Forces Sports Hall of Fame for his tremendous accomplishments in Triathlon.
Tony will hold the position of Chief of Staff. One area of his responsibilities will be the college PE&R programme.

President, RMC Club of Canada 1979- 80…POWIS, Carter McCulloch – At Brockville, on the 22nd of July, 2007. Carter Powis, in his 74th year, beloved husband of Barbara (Plow), loving father of Carter (Mary Pemberton) of Toronto and Graham (Diane Romley) of Greenwich, Connecticut. Dear grandfather of Carter, Philippa, Benjamin and Sarah. Brother of Alfred Powis of Toronto. A funeral service was held at the Parish of St. Lawrence (Trinity Anglican Church), 137 George Street, Brockville, Ontario on Friday, July 27th at 11 o’clock. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Brockville General Hospital Foundation. Arrangements entrusted to the IRVINE FUNERAL HOME, 4 James Street East, Brockville. Condolences

LAHR – 40TH
Events in Lahr German-Canadian Reunion during “Chrysanthema” 19-28 October!
A 40th anniversary (1967-2007) Lahr German-Canadian Reunion will take place during Lahr’s now famous Chrysanthemum Festival. This open-air flower festival takes place every fall (this year from 19 Ocober to 11 November 2007). “International friendship” is the theme of this year’s Chrysanthemum Festival when the old city centre will look its best, lasting for three weeks with activites, live concerts, etc. every day.

HMCS Toronto
HMCS Toronto is presently deployed and recently joined Standing Maritime NATO Group 1 (SNMG1) in Spain. Toronto will conduct a historic NATO deployment by circumnavigating Africa. There are several tactical, operational, and strategic objectives of Operation Sirius. One of the most publicized is NATO’s declaration that they are unhappy with the amount of piracy in the area of the Gulf of Guinea and Horn of Africa.

Memories from The Black Forest Officers’ Mess

When I joined the navy as an ordinary seaman, I never dreamed that years later I’d be commissioned-from-the-ranks as an air force engineering officer. I was attached to 1 Canadian Air Group Headquarters in Lahr, West Germany. The year was 1977. The Cold War was still on. I attended two formal dinners featuring interesting guests in what we called the Black Forest Officers’ Mess. For my presence in West Germany I owed thanks to the opportunities that went along with the Canadian government’s decision to fold the three former services into one on February 1, 1968. For my failure to rise above the rank of captain, I could thank either the inability of air force generals to recognize incomparable brilliance if they tripped over it, or the dogged determination not to rise in the world that has bedevilled my clan for generations, according to one distant ancestor.
