History Tells his tale...

Merlin was begotten by a devil from hell on a virgin as an intended Antichrist. But his expectant mother, advised by her confessor and counselor Blaise who realized what was amiss, had the boy baptized at birth to foil this Satanic plot. Blaise took the boy in and taught him, and raised him from that day, and became his master in magic and in life. Over time, Blaise came to write down Merlin's deeds, some of which he did not see and which Merlin dictated to him. Elsewise, that age would have passed from mind and time.

Merlin went on to become a busybody, aiding humanity against all threats, both within and without. He was seen as a being of darkness, but also of wisdom, for he acknowledged no Earthly prince or potentate, and would not bow knee to any of them. This angered kings, lords, queens, and gods, all, and led to many trials and battles. Despite this, his name was whispered in supplication when darkness came to call, for Merlin was the first line of defense against that darkness, even coming, for a short time to be called Defensor Hominum, or Defender of Humanity.

Eventually, weary and somewhat blinded by life, he wished to try to set up a kingdom that would never fade, and would enable people to raise themselves up. Not exactly the wisest of men, nor the best, he did many things in raising it which would later haunt him. But Camelot did rise.

What Merlin had not counted on was that all humanity, including himself, was flawed. In Camelot's darkest hour, Merlin was betrayed by love and by youth. he locked away in an eternal prison, outside of time, able only to watch as Camelot was brought down by unmerciful law, unbridled passion, unimaginable evil, and the foolishness of men. Wounding himself near to death, he was able to send aid at the last moment, ensuring that Arthur would be taken to Avalon, and thus preserve and healed for some future day, but he could do naught else. And so time slipped away,. and he watched humanity grow, and change, and life itself alter over time.

Post-Canon: Eventually, even an eternal prison failed, and Merlin walked free, humbled by his folly and stupidity, and driven just a little looney by his long imprisonment. He began to interact with humanity again, but this time, in more subtle and quiet ways. This time, much, much quieter...
