Tonight is the night! Although I wasn’t able to see as many of the nominees as I would have liked I figure I might as well throw some picks out there and just see if I get lucky.
Best Visual Effects
- Ex Machina
- Mad Max: Fury Road
- The Martian
- The Revenant
- Star Wars: The Force Awakens
I have to go with my heart on this one, I thought Star Wars was stunning. I’ve heard great things about Ex Machina as a film and will keep it on my list to see but for the category I’ll hope the Force is with me although a Mad Max win wouldn’t surprise me.
Best Film Editing
- The Big Short
- Mad Max: Fury Road
- The Revenant
- Spotlight
- Star Wars: The Force Awakens
I find it hard to make a pick in the editing category because I’m not versed enough in filmography to really understand what I’m looking for. That being said I will cast my vote for Mad Max: Fury Road.
Best Costume Design
- Carol
- Cinderella
- The Danish Girl
- Mad Max: Fury Road
- The Revenant
Well considering I’ve only seen two of the five nominees I feel I should pick between them. The Revenant certainly didn’t impress me from a costume standpoint so I’ll once again choose Mad Max. I have a secret hope for Cinderella to win though just to give me another reason to want to see it.
Best Makeup and Hairstyling
- The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared
- Mad Max: Fury Road
- The Revenant
What the heck is that first movie? Mad Max had some cool stuff in it but I think I’ll go with The Revenant this time. The wounds on DiCaprio’s character after the bear attack were pretty great and I’m sure that took some serious work. Plus there were a lot of bald people in Mad Max.
Best Cinematography
- Carol
- The Hateful Eight
- Mad Max: Fury Road
- The Revenant
- Sicario
I want to see The Hateful Eight so bad. I’m upset that I didn’t get to it prior to the awards show. I’d expect from what I know about it that it will not be the winner of this award however. I believe I’ll choose The Revenant for this category.
Best Production Design
- Bridge of Spies
- The Danish Girl
- Mad Max: Fury Road
- The Martian
- The Revenant
My understanding of this category unfortunately leads me away from Mad Max and The Martian. Both of those films were filmed on neat sets of dirt. The Revenant appeared to be in well chosen natural areas of the earth, but Bridge of Spies required some recreation of historical settings. Since I know nothing about The Danish Girl I’m giving the nod to Bridge of Spies.
Best Sound Mixing
- Bridge of Spies
- Mad Max: Fury Road
- The Martian
- The Revenant
- Star Wars: The Force Awakens
Much like the visual effects category I think this will come down to Mad Max and Star Wars. Once again I’m going to use the Force.
Best Sound Editing
- Mad Max: Fury Road
- The Martian
- The Revenant
- Sicario
- Star Wars: The Force Awakens
I wish someone could explain exactly what makes this category different from the last. That being said how do I not choose Star Wars again?
Best Original Song
- “Earned It” from Fifty Shades of Grey
- “Manta Ray” from Racing Extinction
- “Simple Song #3” from Youth
- “Til It Happens to You” from The Hunting Ground
- “Writing’s on the Wall” from Spectre
I’m pretty sure I’ve heard none of these. Til It Happens to You has Lady Gaga attached to it and she’s having a heck of a year so far. That sounds like a winner to me!
Best Original Score
- Bridge of Spies
- Carol
- The Hateful Eight
- Sicario
- Star Wars: The Force Awakens
Is there any question as to my pick here? I consider Star Wars the greatest overall score ever! I’ve got a bad feeling about this though. This is the seventh time this score has been revised whereas the other nominees are probably considered more “original.” I’m sticking with John Williams until he just can’t make the music anymore.
Best Animated Short Film
- Body Team 12
- Chau, Beyond the Lines
- Claude Lanzmann: Spectres of the Shoah
- A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness
- Last Day of Freedom
Body Team 12 sounds cool I guess?
Best Animated Feature Film
- Anomalisa
- Boy & the World
- Inside Out
- Shaun the Sheep Movie
- When Marnie Was There
I will be sorely disappointed if Inside Out does not win this award. I haven’t had a chance to talk about it online but this film catapulted itself up to one of my favorite animated films ever. It really gave me the feels as the kids say.
Best Adapted Screenplay
- The Big Short
- Brooklyn
- Carol
- The Martian
- Room
Some really good films on this list but I said it in my last review, The Martian needs this award.
Best Original Screenplay
- Bridge of Spies
- Ex Machina
- Inside Out
- Spotlight
- Straight Outta Compton
This is a toughie. I heard great things about Straight Outta Compton but it’s not a subject matter that I have any interest in seeing. I just said Inside Out is one of my favorite animated films, Bridge of Spies and Spotlight were two of the best films I saw this year, and Ex Machina has me intrigued. Since I have to choose only one I opt for Bridge of Spies but without much confidence.
Best Supporting Actress
- Jennifer Jason Leigh – The Hateful Eight
- Rooney Mara – Carol
- Rachel McAdams – Spotlight
- Alicia Vikander – The Danish Girl
- Kate Winslet – Steve Jobs
I’ve already expressed how much I want to see The Hateful Eight and this is just another reason why. Rachel McAdams is a pretty compelling choice but I did get the chance to watch Steve Jobs just yesterday and I though Kate Winslet did a great job. She gets my vote. (**Spoiler Alert: At least somebody from Titanic will!)
Best Supporting Actor
- Christian Bale – The Big Short
- Tom Hardy – The Revenant
- Mark Ruffalo – Spotlight
- Mark Rylance – Bridge of Spies
- Sylvester Stallone – Creed
This category is killing me. I’ve made it very clear in many of my reviews that I want Rocky to win this more than any other pick I make. That being said, there are some great performances in this category. Christian Bale was awesome at quirky, Mark Ruffalo was passionate, Mark Rylance was endearing, and Tom Hardy didn’t stink. Rocky! Rocky! Rocky!
Best Actress
- Cate Blanchett – Carol
- Brie Larson – Room
- Jennifer Lawrence – Joy
- Charlotte Rampling – 45 Years
- Saoirse Ronan – Brooklyn
I have no idea. I liked Brie Larson but it was really Jacob Tremblay that made the movie for me. I hated Brooklyn but I guess Ronan was all right. Jennifer Lawrence makes a great Mistique and Katniss but I haven’t seen Joy or either of the other two nominees. I think I’ll pick Cate Blanchett simply because I don’t think I ever gave Lord of the Rings enough credit.
Best Actor
- Bryan Cranston – Trumbo
- Matt Damon – The Martian
- Leonardo DiCaprio – The Revenant
- Michael Fassbender – Steve Jobs
- Eddie Redmayne – The Danish Girl
I picked Matt Damon in my review of The Martian. After doing so I have watched Steve Jobs and as I type this I have Trumbo playing in the background. I’m not giving it much attention obviously because I’m focused on these predictions in the closing minutes before the show starts. Cranston seems to be killing it though so I’m gonna watch Trumbo with more attention later. Fassbender did a nice job, see what I did there? I’ve only heard stories about the man that was Steve Jobs so it’s hard to say how accurate the depiction was but I liked it. I’ve already stated that DiCaprio didn’t do anything to impress me in The Revenant. He whispered and he crawled so those things are cool. I’m not anti-Leo I promise. I’m not a fan to say the least but I’ve appreciated many of the roles he has played. I don’t think this needs to be the one that gets him over the Oscar hump though so I certainly hope he’s not given the win just because. Sorry Eddie I haven’t seen your movie. I’m going to change my choice here to Bryan Cranston.
Best Director
- Adam McKay – The Big Short
- George Miller – Mad Max: Fury Road
- Alejandro G. Iñárritu – The Revenant
- Lenny Abrahamson – Room
- Tom McCarthy – Spotlight
All of these films were really good. I wish Ridley Scott was on the list though. Since he’s not I suppose I will select George Miller for nostalgia’s sake.
Best Picture
- The Big Short
- Bridge of Spies
- Brooklyn
- Mad Max: Fury Road
- The Martian
- The Revenant
- Room
- Spotlight
Since the purpose of my last eight posts was to come to this point I’ve already made it clear that The Martian is my favorite film on this list. Knowing that I typically disagree with the academy’s choices I expect I will be wrong. If so I hope that the award would go to either Bridge of Spies or Spotlight. The official pick will stay as The Martian though.
Well that’s it my friends, I’ll report back with my score once we see how poorly I did! Enjoy the show.
