The Arts & Crafts house 

Within its walls, Blackwell preserves almost all of its original features – from the immaculate furniture to the stunning decorative flourishes. Imagine a tranquil oasis offering breathtaking views of Windermere and the Coniston Fells. Each south-facing room is a canvas of natural light, bringing to life the intricate decorative elements. 

See craftsmanship at its finest 

Explore a treasure trove of crafts throughout the house. Discover the artistry in the tiles of the fireplaces, the carved stone, the wood panelling, and the exquisite stained glass. Marvel at the mosaic floors, the expertly wrought iron and lead work, the unique hessian wall hangings, and the exquisite plasterwork of the White Drawing Room. Each detail is a testament to the skilled hands that shaped this historic building. 

A showcase of design mastery

Blackwell isn’t just a house; it’s a gallery showcasing works by some of the most renowned Arts & Crafts designers and studios. Admire metalwork by William Arthur Smith Benson, ceramics from Pilkingtons and Ruskin Pottery, and furniture crafted by Morris & Co., Stanley Webb Davies, Ernest Gimson, and Baillie Scott himself. 

The enchanting gardens of Blackwell 

Stroll through Blackwell’s gardens which changes with the seasons. Here, the captivating views of the lake and Coniston Fells offer a serene backdrop that soothes the soul. 

Crafted by the renowned Arts & Crafts garden designer Thomas Mawson, the original gardens unfold in a series of terraces. These terraces are more than just design; they are a strategic masterpiece to capture the most stunning views from the house. 

Today, vibrant flower beds line the York stone terrace, leading to a lower terrace and sweeping lawn—inviting you to pause, relax, and imagine life here in a bygone era.

Tea room 

Located in what used to be Blackwell’s old kitchen and scullery, the Tea Room retains its historical charm, highlighted by the original fireplace. This bright and welcoming space offers a cosy blend of history and modern comfort. 

Enjoy a seasonal menu of fresh lunches, sandwiches, and homemade cakes—the perfect setting to relax and reconnect over great food.

Prefer the fresh air? Take a seat on the outdoor terrace and soak in panoramic views of Windermere, bringing an extra touch of calm to your visit.

Frances Priest: Motif | Line | Colour

Explore the ceramic work of celebrated Edinburgh-based artist Frances Priest in Motif | Line | Colour, an exhibition tracing 25 years of her artistic work. 

This exhibition follows Priest’s evolution from her early monochrome pieces to her more recent, intricate, and colourful designs. It showcases work from her latest collection, Unfixing, rarely seen pieces from her personal archive, and newly created works inspired by the White Drawing Room at Blackwell.
