Weaponization

The Times put together a chart and accompanying summary of how a person in particular has twisted the concept of “weaponization” into a one sided prop that applies only to a few important friends — and also somehow by proxy to a legion of dispossessed. This substitutionary transaction that the country has witnessed repeatedly since 2016 still seems like a magic trick to me. The sleight of hand in it. The abrasive and blatant power grab the 1.8B fund represented. Is disgusting too strong a word? No.

NYT:

Many of the people Mr. Trump has said are victims of weaponization faced enough evidence against them that they were convicted at trial or pleaded guilty. His defenses of them, by contrast, have often relied on conspiracy theories, and some Republican officials have balked at his efforts to excuse or reward them.

Review

At the outset - I haven't read an Oates sentence in a couple of years - after LENGTHY detours down Ferrante dr. and Roth ln. and Karl Ove ave. Returning to the discursive and sidewinding language and shifting perspectives taxed my brain at the start.

p. 56 — "Glady's voice conveyed reverence and enthusiasm as always, but beneat there was a calm implacable rage." 'Remember Norma Jeana—die at the right time.

My 18 y/o says that almost every guy at his school is into sports betting. I remember the NFL fantasy leagues of the 2010's — and it was a gateway drug to today's situation. Mainstream gambling is putting the mob out of business, and it's cheapening the souls of a generation. And pro athletes shouldn't be subject to threats from gambling addicts - at least not to any larger extent than they have been for a century or more.

Lindsay Vonn, already a skiing legend, her place in history already secure, should not have competed in the 2026 Milan Winter Olympics. According to many reports, she had recently ruptured her Achilles tendon, a serious wound that would already have sidelined any mere mortal. Does one need an Achilles tendon to ski? I'll leave that to the reader's own research - but at the very least, the injury should have signalled to Vonn: Get out while you still can - Hang up your poles - Ride off into the sunset, again - Retire, and let it stick this time. Save your body another grievous injury - and save the medical establishment an unnecessary restorative surgery - and leave room for someone who truly needs medical care to receive it - instead of using the medical establishment as a backstop to chasing your dreams of glory one more time.

Finished: Feb 18

My review:
I started taking notes almost 300 pages in, so I missed recording many trains of thought. But the book was engrossing, in that specifically mundane Karl Ove kind of way. I wasn't sure where he was taking me - jumping from perspective to perspective is a different mode for him. But by the end, I felt that the pieces had been aligned for something big moving forward. We aren't going to get aliens landing - we're just going to get piles and piles of the most normal life that can be put to a page, mixed with linguistic trickery to make us think we're getting philosophically deep - when what we are truly receiving is more stream of consciousness thought from small minded characters who are out to serve their own ends, create their own little worlds. One feels these characters are headed for the judgment seat, in the great unveiling to come. But I also have a feeling that KO will stop short of such a catharsis.

Katherine

the mentions of soda in Karl Ove. Someone should write a thesis on soda in KO. Gulping down soda. Lots of gulpers in this novel.

Egil

this is the doppelganger of Karl Ove. and maybe i shouldn't have been surprised at how much the novel, in the end, centered upon him, and hinged around him.

I've chosen List view as my go-to Finder view in recent months. It is a good fit for how I like to navigate folders, being able to keep several within view, but drop in and out of the contents of each, without changing the overall directory level. I was formerly a Column view person, navigating via the arrow keys, but I've found that using multiple Finder windows spatially, a window per List view folder, works even better, and allows me to better keep my bearings.

A quick memory: back around a decade ago (a decade is 10 years) I was in charge of music at a church. That is called being “a worship pastor.” I was not very comfortable with that title, for reasons I can get into another time. I went through a trend of having the musicians play with a supplemental backing of pre-recorded music during church. The intent was to fill out our rather small lineup and provide a “bigger sound.” Feels like Spinal Tap just typing it out. Well, I myself would create these “backing tracks” on my computer at home—playing extra guitar parts, programming in extra drums, adding transition effects, adding the occasional frizzy keyboard arp part. I would usually wake up between 4 and 5 AM to put the finishing touches on the “backing track.” I put the team through a lot to make this work — and from where I now stand, it feels misguided and selfish.
