“Our choices have consequences. The pathway we walk has a destination. I want you to make good choices so that the consequences will be good. I want your destination to be one that glorifies God. If you’re in a broken place, it may be difficult to make good choices. Is your pathway littered with the debris of brokenness? I want to help you get past all that and learn to be still, and know that He is God.” —from the Prologue

The Heart That Heals is centered around Psalm 46:10a, Be still, and know that I am God. It’s a book about healing our brokenness. It's about doing the next thing, and sometimes, the next thing is to be still, and know that He is God. This book is full of Scripture and practical application. Each chapter will challenge you to reflect, apply, pray, meditate on and memorize Scripture. It’s your homework but in a good way.

Please don’t think you’re alone. You are not! Thousands of women just like you have used these biblical principles to heal their brokenness. You have not come here by accident. You've found this place today for a reason and you belong here!

If you and I were Pen Pals, The Heart That Heals is the letter I would write to you if you’d lost a child, a husband, a best friend, or a sister. It’s the kind of letter I would seal with a heart-shaped sticker that says, “God Loves You,” you know, that kind of sticker you used to get in Sunday school. You’d read my letter and you’d know, yes, you would know, He truly does love me! He loves me in the midst of this storm. —Patsy

This book is packed full of encouragement!
I sat down to read The Heart that Heals the other night and had a hard time putting it down. Finally, a book that not only encourages me when I am burdened, but also helps me to become the giver of encouragement. The format of this book is interactive: • A coloring page with a verse at the beginning of each chapter • Space to write out verses • Space provided throughout to take notes • A reflection and application section at the end of each chapter • Questions that make you think and that include space for answering • A space for the reader to focus on prayer The Heart that Heals is heavy on scripture. I love that! It is truly about “Healing our Brokenness Through the Promises of God.” I guess more than anything this book is helping me in the area of dependance on God.

The Heart That’s Heals is one of the best books I’ve ever read. It has has helped me move beyond past hurts I’ve been carrying for years. It’s very inspiring and practical. It’s also helping me learn to pray better. I love the notes sections for reflection. It was easy to read and full of Gospel truth. I read it by myself but I also believe it would be an amazing bible study.

Stillness on the Way to Peace with God
Reviewed in the United States on September 4, 2019

With a steaming cup of tea in my favorite mug and an open Bible, I turned to a fresh page in my journal and prepared to take advantage of an empty and quiet house. Funny how stillness without is no guarantee of stillness within. A dozen tasks on my to-do list suddenly began competing for the top slot. My phone pinged a reminder of the great wide world of interaction I might be missing. Worst of all, the inability to corral my undisciplined brain took the lead in a parade of faults and failures that taunted my good intentions there at the dining room table.

If you’ve sat in that particular chair before, Patsy Burnette shares the great good news that no matter where you are or where you’ve been, stillness of heart and soul is a gift from God that comes to those who trust for it and wait for it. The Heart That Heals is her story as well as her affirmation that God stands firmly and faithfully behind his promises of comfort and strength.

“Be still and know that I am God.” (Psalm 46:10)

Burnette experienced this truth first hand when, as a young mum, her eighteen-year-old sister died in a tragic car accident. Making a conscious choice to reject bitterness and self- pity, she has invested her energy instead in the slow process of knowing God. On the journey, she has learned the painful truth that the waters do indeed rise and the flames may come close enough to singe us, but the power of God endures:

He is with you through the waters.

The rivers will not overwhelm you.

The flames of heartbreak and trouble will not consume you. (Isaiah 43:1-2)

    The Source of Stillness

By grace, stillness will come as God lives alongside us and as he gives us strength to move outside our own pain to offer help to a friend or to pray someone else through a dark season. Therefore, Patsy writes with the goal of helping her readers, but also with the hope of equipping each of us to become helpers.

The truth that runs like a ribbon through Scripture is that “tribulation is inevitable,” but “peace is available.” (64) If this irony is news to you, Burnette prescribes a strong dose of John 16 truth, the words of Jesus to his disciples in one of their last conversations before his arrest and crucifixion:

“I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33)

Acceptance of divinely appointed circumstances is God’s anodyne for the painful happenings. The stillness he brings to the chaos is a path of peace through storm.

Acknowledging my own inability to swim, sprint, fight, connect the dots, or crack the code to find peace on my own terms is the first step toward “the peace that surpasses all understanding.” It is this circumference that defines the still center where the healing heart finds rest.

    Encouraging & Comforting!

The book arrived and its lovely cover immediately had my attention. Later that afternoon, I made myself a cup of tea and settled on the couch to read.

In her book, The Heart That Heals, Patsy Burnette tells her story. It's a story of loss and brokenness. It's a story centered upon one verse:

"Be still and know that I am God." (Psalm 46:11a)

The author shares in the prologue:

"I hope this book gives you the strength to cast your burdens on the Lord. But not just that, I hope it also gives you the tools you need to teach others how to do the same."

The book is a journey. A personal journey with God towards not only healing, but discovering we arrive not by accident but on purpose.

The book is divided into three parts:

    1) The Problem. This section looks at breaking down the wall of emotions which so often plague us, hindering us from moving forward.

    2) The Solution. This section addresses casting our burdens on the Lord and coming alongside of others. This is where we learn about the comfort of God.

    3) The Application. This section addresses how we are to respond to our burdens so that we can begin to see the blessing our burdens often bring to us.

Each chapter starts with a coloring page that includes a Scripture. These are wonderful to write out on an index card so that our focus is set, the verse is readily available throughout the day, and we become rooted and grounded in God's Word.

Each chapter concludes with a "Reflection & Application" which is questions to reflect more deeply on what God would want one to learn. There is space for prayer requests and also a place to write out the Scripture for memorization. The book has been published with wide margins, leaving plenty of space to write one's thoughts.

This is a book for all of us as we all face brokenness at some point in life. We all have burdens we must carry. The Heart That Heals brings this comforting thought on the compassion of God:

"And because of His compassion, He took action ...

He is not simply touched by the feeling of compassion; the Bible says He is moved. Moved to action by compassion. And His actions forever changed the lives of those He was moved with compassion toward."

    (from pages 68-69)

As we still ourselves before God and His Word, allowing the God of all comfort to have His way in our lives, we will discover we have a heart that heals.

A wonderful Bible study for those who are hurting

“Is your pathway littered with the debris of brokenness? I want to help you get past all that and learn to be still, and know that He is God.”

With this question, author Patsy Burnette takes those who are heartbroken and searching for answers on a remarkable study of God’s Word. This study is full of hope and healing for all who have suffered tragedy and heartbreak. The author shares her own personal journey of sorrow and shows she clearly understands the struggles of coping through tragedy.

Patsy Burnette has written this study in a readable and compassionate voice. There are ten chapters to this book that are divided into sections: The Problem; The Solution; and The Application. She discusses the emotional aspect of brokenness and how men and women process this differently, which is not always addressed in studies like this. All throughout the study, there’s encouraging commentary and Scripture verses on which to meditate.

I especially loved the way the author presented John Chapter 16 and I’ll be taking additional time to work my way through this chapter again.

Besides the wonderful content, the artwork in this book is beautiful. There are ten memory verse coloring pages, one for each chapter, that

those who love this type of Bible journaling will enjoy.

Although this book works well as a personal Bible study, I’d also recommend it as a great resource for a small group study. I can see this book being used between friends who are seeking to encourage each other on a journey through sorrow.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher. All opinions are my own.
