"I tore through this in one evening and didn't even mean to. Concise, easy to read, and packed with clever strategies, Jesse's quick start guide is a fantastic place to start for anyone looking to better understand their-or a loved one's-ADHD."
- Jessica McCabe, author of How to ADHD: An Insider's Guide to Working with Your Brain (Not Against It)
"I've read tons of ADHD books-or, more accurately, I've started tons of them-but Jesse's is legit the first one I've actually finished (and I did it in one sitting). Extra Focus is an entertaining and incredibly easy read, with no unnecessary repetition for the sake of extra pages. Just concise information and practical tips, sprinkled with tons of relatable 'ohhhh, it's not just me!' moments. I really wish this guide existed when I first got diagnosed. If you're dealing with ADHD-or even just trying to understand it better-I highly recommend you check out Extra Focus. Trust me (and thank Jesse later)."
- Dani Donovan, ADHD creator and author of The Anti-Planner: How to Get Sh*t Done When You Don't Feel Like It

"I've been waiting for Jesse Anderson to get all his ideas down in a book. His newsletter and tweets have improved my life so much. He gets the ADHD brain better than anyone I've seen and offers usable, smart tools and the context to make me interested in them. I'm so glad he has put all of that in one place, because I have ADHD and am not good at looking in lots of different places."
- Adam Davidson, cofounder of NPR's Planet Money podcast and author of The Passion Economy
"There's a reason hundreds of thousands of people on social media have been drawn to Jesse J. Anderson's thoughts around ADHD: he's better at combining first-hand experiences with well-researched facts than just about anybody. A Life-Changing Resource for Understanding and Managing Adult ADHD
Reviewed in the United States on January 1, 2024"Extra Focus: The Quick Start Guide to Adult ADHD" by Jesse Anderson is an extraordinary resource that has significantly impacted my understanding and management of ADHD in adulthood. From the first page, Jesse Anderson's expertise and compassion shine through, offering a sense of hope and understanding that is often missing in adult ADHD discussions.
What sets this book apart is its practicality and accessibility. Anderson does an excellent job of breaking down complex topics into manageable and relatable content. His approach is straightforward, free from jargon, which makes it an easy read for anyone, regardless of their familiarity with ADHD.
The book is filled with actionable advice, grounded in the latest research and personal experience. Anderson's strategies for managing daily life with ADHD are not just theoretical; they are tried and tested, offering real value to the reader. Another aspect of this book that I deeply appreciate is its focus on the positive traits of ADHD. This positive perspective is empowering and uplifting, especially for those who may struggle with the stigma surrounding ADHD.
The book is also an excellent resource for friends and family members of those with ADHD. It provides insightful perspectives that foster empathy and understanding, making it an invaluable tool for improving relationships and communication.

A truly helpful book from someone who knows
Reviewed in the United States on January 21, 2026I was diagnosed with ADHD-PI very late in life, at 56 years old. I felt very lost, even with a therapist, becuase while he knew how to deal with me clinically, he hasn't been through it himself. I purchased Jesse Anderson's book over two years ago, and it truly helped me frame my diagnosis in a very real, down-to-earth, and heartfelt way. Reading through the book, I felt as though the author understood my struggles. He provided many different ideas for how to work WITH my ADHD instead of trying to to work AROUND it. The book has been very helpful to me, and I've even returned to it multiple times over the years to keep review the ideas and/or keep them fresh in my head. The book is very easy to digest and it's broken into enough sections to make it easy to find what I'm looking for.

Refreshing
Reviewed in the United States on December 24, 2023As an older someone, ADD/ADHD was not commonly diagnosed when I was growing up. I believe I have some aspects of ADHD but have grown so accustomed to working around it that I can convince myself that I don’t have it. That said, as I’ve gotten older my systems and techniques are failing. I’m struggling. This book is a good reminder of how to get back to basics and build new systems that work for how I am now.

Must read for anyone struggling with ADHD and how to find ways to deal with it in a positive way.
Reviewed in the United States on March 30, 2024I am not typically a fan of self-help books but this one is completely different. I spend alot of time researching how to be more organized at work and improving my cognitive skills based on the way my brain works. I have a busy, fast paced job with deadlines I am constantly having to meet. And it can be a real struggle at times and then I go into a downward spiral which makes it all the worse. What’s worse is that I can have a great week and then the next week I am near useless at working. Through all my researching I found this book and it’s given me so much insight. It’s nice to know what I feel and deal with is not imagined or me being overly dramatic. That it’s real and I am not alone in this struggle. But more than that the strategies being provided, which are doable and simple. I have already started using some of them and will continue to do so. And pass along what I have and will continue to learn on my journey. Thank you to the author who took the time to pass along what you have learned!

A Great Guide to Living with ADHD
Reviewed in the United States on February 22, 2024Within the past year, four people in my life with varying degrees of closeness to me have been diagnosed with ADHD. I've been seeking out all I can to learn more about the condition so I can better support my friends and family.
This book is an outstanding guide to living with ADHD. It's filled with practical advice from someone who's been there, and it's written in a very approachable way. Chapters are short, straightforward, and there's even a quick summary of the main points. It could not be written in a better fashion for people who might struggle with working memory or attention to certain types of things.
My turn to put it simply: This is the perfect guide for people with ADHD to help them thrive.

Most enjoyable hyperfocus of the day
Reviewed in the United States on September 21, 2023The only disappointing thing about this book is that I pre-ordered it on Kindle and then forgot what date it was coming out, so my review is later than I'd hoped. I first came across Jesse's writing on ADHD through an online writing community we were both part of in April 2021 (Ship 30 for 30). I'm so pleased that his now legendary ADHD-focussed atomic essays led him to develop his Extra Focus newsletter, a short course, and now this book. I've devoured and supported each new iteration of his content creation so pre-ordering this book was a no-brainer, and it didn't disappoint. Whether you have been diagnosed with ADHD, suspect you have ADHD, or have key relationships with someone with ADHD, my bet is that you'll find something useful in this book to help you on your way. It won't solve all your problems, but it doesn't claim to. It's a QUICK read, a STARTing point to increase your understanding, and it's a friendly GUIDE from someone who knows. You'll probably still juggle chainsaws, but you might be more aware of it and better equipped when you accidentally drop one.

A Must-Read for Understanding and Thriving with ADHD
Reviewed in the United States on September 26, 2023Jesse's approach to delving into the intricacies of ADHD is nothing short of remarkable. He effortlessly combines clinical insights with everyday language, making the book both informative and accessible. His use of metaphors and comparisons helps paint a vivid picture of life with ADHD, allowing ADHD readers to feel understood and non-ADHD readers to understand the challenges faced by those with this diagnosis.
Moreover, "Extra Focus" is a quick read that doesn't overwhelm the reader. The book's structure, with concise summaries at the end of each chapter, makes it easy to revisit key takeaways and apply them in your daily life.
Jesse's writing style is engaging and relatable, making it an enjoyable read for anyone.

Tushar Joshi5 out of 5 starsExtra Focus - the first book anyone should read to know about ADHD in 2023
Reviewed in India on September 21, 2023ADHD is an evolving concept that has changed scientists' understanding for many years. For a new reader, weeding out older ideas and figuring out the latest information about this subject becomes a daunting task when there are so many books and materials available written over many years.
Jesse's book Extra Focus brings forward the latest understanding and crisp points about ADHD in a concise way.
I will recommend anyone who wants to know more about ADHD in 2023 to read the book Extra Focus first to get an initial idea about the recent trends in the understanding and myths related to the name of the condition.
Understanding that others are going through the same confusion and guilt about this condition provides a huge relief. Jesse's story helps the reader connect with the book and relate many ideas from their experiences.
I liked the highlights that explain why many current self-help books and methods that work for neurotypical people may not work for neurodivergent brains and the suggestions he offers to overcome those limitations.
There are action plans and strategies worth reading, many of which can help the reader improve their management of the condition. The strategies section is valuable and leads to absolute happiness while reading. Strategy summaries provide help to reinforce the concepts.
With the initial start obtained from this book, the reader can venture into the world of ADHD to learn more from the scientific books and research with proper direction. This book is a valuable addition to the journey of understanding ADHD.
