"A thoughtful and deeply rewarding sequel [to Destined for Joy], Joy Beyond All Worlds presents the Christian Universalist vision with clarity, charity, and an unshakable confidence in the invincible goodness of God."
—John Carswell, author of
Tolkien’s Overture and host of The Tolkien Road Podcast

Joy Beyond All Worlds gathers Alvin F. Kimel Jr.’s reflections on the greater hope of the gospel: the unconditional grace of the Holy Trinity, the destiny of creation in Christ, and the final triumph of divine love. Drawing on Scripture, the Church Fathers, George MacDonald, David Bentley Hart, and J. R. R. Tolkien, Kimel argues that Christian hope must be measured by the boundless goodness of God.

In these essays, Kimel explores universal salvation, apokatastasis, divine judgment, free will, and the healing purpose of God’s redemptive action. As Roberto J. De La Noval, Assistant Professor of the Practice of Theology at Boston College has expressed, "In these pages Kimel's pen overflows beyond theological and philosophical analyses to sermons for piercing the heart and to poetic revelries on the mythic genius of J.R.R. Tolkien and the symbolic theology of George MacDonald's novels."

Serious yet accessible, Joy Beyond All Worlds is for readers of theology who are wrestling with hell, hope, the love of God, and the gospel’s final meaning.

Review

I can think of no other contemporary Christian who has pondered the 'greater hope' like Al Kimel has. This new volume provides new riches from his decades-long study, synthesis, and original development of the universalist vision of Christian theology. But it does more. In these pages Kimel's pen overflows beyond theological and philosophical analyses to sermons for piercing the heart and to poetic revelries on the mythic genius of J.R.R. Tolkien and the symbolic theology of George MacDonald's novels. More than a companion to his last work, Destined for Joy, this book crowns Kimel's contributions to our theological moment. Do not miss it!
—Roberto J. De La Noval, Assistant Professor of the Practice of Theology, Boston College

A thoughtful and deeply rewarding sequel,
Joy Beyond All Worlds presents the Christian Universalist vision with clarity, charity, and an unshakable confidence in the invincible goodness of God. As a longtime reader of Kimel's Eclectic Orthodoxy, I found this work both illuminating and stirring, awakening something of that "fool's hope" we glimpse in Tolkien, where grace breaks in beyond all expectation. Here, Kimel deepens his theological reflections with incisive and fitting engagements with the literary visions of George MacDonald and J.R.R. Tolkien.
The closing reflections on Middle-earth are a particular delight, revealing a vision that cuts to the heart even as it draws all things toward their healing.
—John Carswell, author of
Tolkien's Overture and host of The Tolkien Road podcast

Joy Beyond All Worlds finds Al Kimel doing what he does best: treating the Good part of the Good News with radical seriousness for the sake not only of heavy-laden sinners the world over, but of all those who, like me, are tempted to add caveats and conditions to the grace of God. It is a rare theologian who can join such devastating profundity with pastoral sensitivity without diminishing either, but Kimel manages that feat here. His revelatory discussion of Tolkien's The Simarillion is merely icing on the cake.
—David Zahl, author of
Seculosity and The Big Relief

In this book Alvin Kimel reminds us that Christianity's core themes are not vindictive or angry but redemptive. These meditations on hope, love, and salvation highlight God's freedom to share God's life with us. Truly divine freedom, Kimel rightly says, is not the prized American power to be whatever one might happen to want; rather, it is the much higher power to be perfectly good, and to share the beauty of that life with all that is. For humanity, participating in freedom means flourishing in love—a timely message indeed.
—Dr. Jesse Couenhoven, Professor of Moral Theology, Villanova University

In
Joy Beyond All Worlds, theologian and priest Alvin F. Kimel Jr. offers a luminous and confident proclamation of the Gospel's final promise: that God's unconditional love, revealed in the crucified and risen Christ, will not fail. Building upon—but also moving beyond—his earlier work, Destined for Joy, Kimel gathers a rich sequence of theological reflections, pastoral addresses, and literary meditations that explore the doctrine of universal salvation not as a speculative theory, but as the eschatological shape of the Gospel itself. Rooted in Trinitarian theology, the Paschal mystery, and the Church's lived encounter with God in prayer, sacrament, and doxology, these essays argue that Christian hope must finally be measured by fidelity to the God who is absolute love.
The volume ranges widely and confidently: from the unconditional grace of the Holy Trinity and the meaning of apokatastasis, to sustained engagement with figures such as George MacDonald, David Bentley Hart, and the patristic tradition; from searching critiques of penal substitutionary atonement to a striking theological reading of Tolkien's Ainulindale as a vision of cosmic harmony fulfilled in glory. Throughout, Kimel writes not as a detached academic, but as a preacher, in the best sense, speaking to believers—summoning the Church to proclaim the risen Christ as an unconditional promise whose triumph admits of no final negation.
At once rigorous, pastoral, and doxological,
Joy Beyond AII Worlds invites readers to contemplate—and to trust—the greater hope: that God truly intends to be "all in all," and that the final word spoken over creation will be joy.
—Fr. Jonathan Tobias, Orthodox priest, writer, and seminary theology lecturer based in North Carolina

It seems to me that joy and wonder coexist. Both extend beyond the boundaries of speech and understanding. The willingness to extend ourselves into both are necessary to the fullness of being. Though I remain bounded by hope, I read Fr. Aidan's thoughts in these chapters with a joy and wonder. I am particularly carried away by the "thought experiment" of his work on Tolkien's theological construction. The imaginings of Middle Earth call to something deep within us that longs to join in the song. May Fr. Aidan continue to sing.
—Fr Stephen Freeman, Orthodox priest (retired) and author of
Everywhere Present: Christianity in a One-Storey Universe and other books

Kimel beautifully and convincingly expresses the hope for universal salvation, working it out with fresh application across several new areas including George MacDonald's theology and the theology of music. A must-read for anyone interested in these topics.
—Dr Scott Hill, Assistant Professor of Philosophy, Wichita State University

Father Kimel's marvelous book ignites and reignites the hope of Trinitarian apokatastasis—the union of not only humankind but all that can be with the Father in the Son by the power of the loving Spirit. Building on the firm foundation of such saints such as Gregory of Nyssa, Isaac of Niniveh and J.R.R. Tolkien, Kimel envisions the Cross and Pascha as the sudden turn of all things for the better, leading to a Spirit-led harmony we can barely dare to enunciate. But, against all odds, Kimel once more paves the way for a new reformation better than the previous one: uniting the Church in a proclamation of the unassailable victory of God among us, our Lord Jesus Christ.
—The Rev Dr Petri Samuel Tikka, Finnish Lutheran pastor and author of the dissertation "The Holy Trinity and Universal Salvation: Exploring God's Love and Impassibility"

Beginnings and endings matter. Good beginnings are the foundation of every story, yet a beautiful story can be ruined by a bad ending. This book is about the alpha and omega of all things. Alvin Kimel argues passionately that the story we inhabit begins with the overflow of divine love—and despite freely chosen detours into evil, it must ultimately end in the triumph of God's relentless grace.
Far more than an academic treatise, this book is a spiritual companion. Reading it during Holy Week, it served as my guide through the darkest sufferings of humanity, down into the depths of hell, and out into the jubilant light of the resurrection. Kimel packs his chapters with profound wisdom, effortlessly bridging ancient sages like St Isaac the Syrian and Maximus the Confessor with modern theologians like David Bentley Hart. Culminating in heartfelt reflections on the mythopoeic writings of J. R. R. Tolkien and George MacDonald, this book is a theological triumph, a masterpiece of Christian hope.
—Dr Daniel Gabelman, author of
George MacDonald: Divine Carelessness and Fairytale Levity and chair of the George MacDonald Society.
