Meet Marie Johnson | We Are AUSactive Member Stories

For AUSactive Member Marie Johnson, joining the exercise and active health industry wasn't about starting over; it was about bringing together decades of experience to make an even greater impact.

After leading innovation across technology, healthcare and public services, Marie completed her fitness qualifications and became an exercise professional. Today, she combines her passion for movement with expertise in artificial intelligence (AI), digital health and healthy ageing through MarieAI Training, exploring how emerging technologies can complement exercise professionals and help more Australians stay active throughout life.

Marie believes exercise is about far more than improving fitness. It builds confidence, supports independence, and empowers people to live healthier, more fulfilling lives.

As she explains:

“It is never too late to learn something new, pursue a new qualification, or contribute in a different way.”

Becoming an AUSactive Member

Marie officially joined AUSactive on 24 March 2026, becoming part of a national community committed to improving lives through movement.

For Marie, joining AUSactive represents more than professional membership. It provides opportunities to continue learning, collaborate with industry leaders and contribute to the future of Australia's exercise and active health sector.

She values being surrounded by professionals who share the same purpose, helping people live healthier, stronger, and more active lives.

A Career Inspired by Health, Technology and People

Although Marie's journey into the exercise profession may seem unconventional, movement has always been part of her life.

For many years, she built a successful career leading technology and healthcare innovation. However, alongside her professional achievements, fitness remained a constant source of motivation and wellbeing.

Everything changed while supporting her husband, Allan, through complex cardiac conditions and rehabilitation.

Watching his recovery firsthand reinforced the life-changing role exercise professionals play in rebuilding strength, confidence and independence.

Rather than viewing fitness as a separate career, Marie saw an opportunity to combine everything she had learned throughout her life.

She completed her fitness qualifications, knowing the future of healthcare would increasingly bring together exercise, technology, and human connection.

Lifelong Learning Never Stops

One message appears consistently throughout Marie's story; learning never ends.

Even after decades of leadership across healthcare and technology, she chose to become a qualified exercise professional because she believes curiosity drives meaningful change.

Her qualifications include:

  • Certificate IV in Fitness – Personal Trainer
  • Certificate III in Fitness – Group Exercise Instructor and Gym Instructor
  • MBA – Melbourne Business School
  • Bachelor of Arts – Deakin University
  • Graduate of Harvard Kennedy School Senior Executive Fellows Program
  • Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors
  • Tertiary studies in Law

For Marie, education has never been about collecting qualifications. Instead, every new skill creates another opportunity to help others.

Combining Exercise and Artificial Intelligence

Today, AUSactive Member Marie Johnson is exploring how artificial intelligence can support, not replace, exercise professionals.

Through MarieAI Training, she develops digital coaching experiences designed to make quality health information and exercise support more accessible.

Marie believes technology should amplify the expertise of qualified professionals rather than compete with it.

“Technology won't replace professionals, it will amplify their impact.”

Looking ahead, she sees enormous opportunities for AI, healthy ageing, and digital innovation to strengthen the exercise and active health industry.

By combining professional knowledge with technology, exercise professionals will be able to support more people while maintaining the empathy, trust and personal relationships that remain central to great coaching.

Turning Lived Experience into Purpose

Among her many accomplishments, Marie is most proud of transforming personal experiences into solutions that help others.

After supporting Allan throughout years of cardiac rehabilitation, she co-created the Digital Human Cardiac Coach, using technology to encourage more people to participate in exercise and better manage their health.

This work eventually led to the creation of MarieAI Training, which continues to explore new ways of improving health outcomes through innovation.

For Marie, every project begins with one simple question:

“How can this improve someone's life?”

Exercise Is About Human Potential

Throughout her career, Marie has worked across healthcare, disability, technology, and fitness.

Despite their differences, she has discovered they all share one common purpose, helping people achieve more than they thought possible.

She believes exercise professionals are uniquely positioned to unlock human potential by helping people become stronger, healthier, and more confident.

Instead of focusing on limitations, she encourages people to recognise their abilities.

One conversation with Allan continues to guide everything she does.

He simply said:

“I want people to understand what I can do, not what I can't do.”

That philosophy has become the foundation of Marie's work and continues to inspire her approach to active health.

Looking Ahead to the Future of Active Health

Marie believes Australia is entering one of the most exciting periods in the history of the exercise profession.

As Australians live longer, healthy ageing, preventative health and digital technology will become increasingly important.

Exercise professionals will play a central role in helping people maintain independence, improve quality of life, and prevent chronic disease.

At the same time, technology will extend their reach, making evidence-based support available to more communities.

However, Marie believes empathy, trust, and professional judgement will always remain irreplaceable.

Technology may evolve rapidly, but people will always need qualified professionals who understand motivation, behaviour change, and human connection.

Advice for Future Exercise Professionals

Marie encourages anyone considering a career in the exercise and active health industry to remember that success begins with people.

Technical knowledge is essential, but curiosity, empathy, and a willingness to keep learning are equally important.

She also encourages future professionals to embrace opportunities that may seem unexpected.

As her own journey demonstrates, some of life's most rewarding careers begin much later than expected.

If she could offer one piece of advice to her younger self, it would simply be:

“Stay curious. Don't be afraid to pursue ideas that seem unconventional and remember that age is never a barrier to learning something new.”

Three Words That Define Marie

When asked to describe her career in just three words, Marie chose:

Curiosity. Possibility. Participation.

Together, these words have guided every stage of her journey, from technology executive to exercise professionals, and continue to shape her vision for healthier communities.
