In fact, this is the most popular variety for home-grown avocados, with the fruits loved for their rich, creamy flesh and distinctive bumpy skin that darkens as the fruit ripens on the plant.

Better still, it starts life as a handsome evergreen feature, with dark, glossy leaves and a tidy trunk that look superb in a bright room, conservatory, greenhouse or sheltered summer patio.

Even before fruit appears, �Hass� brings a lush, exotic look that makes it far more interesting than an ordinary foliage plant. Then, with adequate warmth, humidity, light, space and patience, mature plants may go on to produce their own avocados from around 5-7 years in good conditions.

Grow it in a pot so it can move outside during the warmest months, then bring it under cover before the cold arrives. Give it bright conditions, regular watering in active growth and room to develop.
