Hello! It’s been a while. If you’ve followed this blog for a long time, you’ll know the dormancy is normal and very much on brand for me, and that I’ve spent the past decade blogging about how I don’t write. I also used to take a lot of photographs and would never leave my house without a camera. But that passion for photography fizzled as well, thanks to Instagram.
I’ve been without these creative outlets for years. (I write and edit professionally, but I’m talking here about my own personal pursuits.) I’ve taken up new interests over the past 10 years, primarily yoga and gardening, and while there’s certainly space to express myself through both, they aren’t really channels for creativity (at least for me). I’ve tried to pick up other hobbies, but they haven’t stuck, or a life change cut it short. I loved taiko drumming; Nick and I practiced for about a year-and-a-half with the Sonoma County Taiko group, but after I had a baby, we both stopped going to those classes. As I wrote a few years ago at Longreads, taiko had been my first opportunity as an adult to engage deeply with music and an instrument in some way (since playing the violin when I was in elementary and middle school). I’ve never thought of myself as a musician or musically inclined, but I’ve always loved music.
I’ve loved electronic dance music for nearly 30 years, ever since that first underground warehouse rave in Oakland in May 1997 lit a fire in me. For years I was focused on the partying and dancing and substance-taking, but then I slowed down in my thirties. These days, I don’t often go out dancing, and if I do, I’ll stick to day parties so I’m back home and in bed by 10pm. But I’ve never stopped listening.
Last summer, as I was driving across the Bay Bridge and listening to a Housewerk playlist on Spotify, a thought came to mindโone that I’ve had every few years: I should have learned how to mix. The thought is bathed in regret each time, and then I’ve quickly dismissed it. But on that drive last year, I interrogated the possibility for the first time. Why not? What’s stopping me? I’m in my mid-forties and not getting any younger.
So in August, I bought a controller that’s great for beginners (the DDJ-FLX4), some headphones, and a small speaker. I’m happy to say that it was the right decisionโit’s not just a new hobby that I really enjoy, but a way to stay connected to the music I love and culture I grew up in.
I’ve uploaded three mixes so farโmostly consisting of house, tech house, and bass house. I realize that each mix is very much a creative project, which is something I’ve never thought about before. I’ve listened to countless DJ sets and curated so many of my own playlists over the years, but it’s very different now being able to mix my own. And it’s so fun.
Perfectionism and imposter syndrome killed my writing habit. Over time, the pressure to press “Publish” and write and think in public became so strong that it paralyzed me. I don’t really set new year’s resolutions, but one thing I told myself at the start of the year is to not take myself too seriously in 2025โand to give myself permission to learn in the open and embrace any imperfections in these recordings. I know I have a lot to learn technically.
Feel free to listen, and sorry in advance to those of you who hate house and techno ๐ Who knows, one of these might be great for your next workout!
Happy new year.
