The longer you look at it the more obvious it is that basically all the problems of the world have solutions, that somebody is EVENTUALLY going to implement them (maybe not now, maybe not today, but eventually).

When this happens, it becomes increasingly clear that the only real purpose of Doomerism is to allow the person espousing it to let themselves off the hook for doing anything to help improve the world around them.

It's just laziness masquerading as enlightenment. If there's no hope, then you can feel morally validated and justified in fucking off and not doing anything.

I've got no patience for it anymore. I'm not going to argue with people who do it, but I am going to ignore them.

Image

There’s the other doom option, where solutions are not found, but this is no excuse for not treating each other well in the meantime.

EVERYBODY post your struggle/lazy/easy/low spoons go-to meals so when we all struggle next we can explore the notes.

Flavored brats/sausages with cheese or fruit etc can be delicious air-fried and plain, and wrapped in a paper towel and eaten by hand without dirtying plates and cutlery. (If you’re up to it, add buns/side/toppings to your ability level.)

i know this isn't going to be low-spoons for some people but i know that sometimes "budgeting how much food i'm eating to make sure i don't go broke / have to work an extra shift next week and then cry from pain and exhaustion" is part of spoons. or it has been in my life, such that "food i can make on autopilot without money-guilt" is a type of recipe to know. here's one:

  • one 1/2 package of frozen corn (wrap the other half in a rubber band and put in the freezer for next time)
  • one cup rice
  • one can black beans (rinse these, even if just in the can)

Start rice.
Microwave the frozen corn in a bowl (this can be the bowl you use to eat from later) until largely defrosted. add warmed corn to pot with butter or oil on mediumish. "grill" in the pot until cooked (starting to brown works), then put back in bowl. if you have them, toss chili powder and butter on the corn right before or right after putting them back in the bowl.
Add black beans to pot. if you have them, cumin, garlic, and/or oregano are great to add to the beans at this stage.
Once beans are hot, you have three choices: 2. add water, 3. add lots of water and some kind of bouillon, or 1. add the corn right now and move to start eating.

  1. if you want to start eating right now, serve over rice, top with cheese if you have it, consume voraciously. also great for uplifting the cheapest possible tortilla chips you can find or tucked in a microwaved tortilla for easy sitting-still-and-eating.
  2. if you want to add water, add abt 2 cups of water to beans and bring to boil. once there cut the heat, add the corn, and serve over or alongside rice depending on your sensory preference.
  3. if you have bouillon, add alongside at least 4 cups of water and savor the smell and heat that permeates your apartment. you can repeat this process, adding a few shakes of your favorite hot sauce instead of bouillon for the second round. when you can't wait any longer, cut the heat, add corn, and eat your soup! try a big dollop of greek yogurt into the soup right before eating.

if you have cilantro, (it goes bad quick but it's also cheap) you can fit a TON of it into this recipe at almost any point. not Every point, pick one, but it's delicious even added right before serving. all told, you should have 2-3 servings of extremely edible food for under $3 that no voice in your head can tell you isn't deliciously worth it.

We're at the "JK Rowling is personally funding litigation to try and destroy AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL" stage of rabid UK terf brain.

Screenshot via Alejandra Caraballo @esqueer.net on bluesky

Quoted tweet from Trans Widows' Voices. @transwidows: Whilst I understand the detriment to Beira's Place is real, and focussing on @jk rowling get clicks it's a shame that mainstream press coverage of the Amnesty debacle is not also focussing on us smaller groups listed who do … Tweet thread from J.K. Rowling @jk_rowling: Should any of the women's organisations targeted by @AmnestyUK's recent 'anti-rights' blacklist wish to take legal action, applications can be made to the JK Rowling Women's Fund. jkrwf.org Gay men's organisations named on the list are welcome to contact me through my website. While the JK Rowling's Fund was set up to support women, JK Rowling herself is more than happy to donate to your legal fighting fund.ALT

Tldr Amnesty International, global human rights organisation, published a report called 'A growing threat: the anti-rights movement in the UK'. In it is detailed, amongst others, a whole bunch of transphobic groups and organisations, including Beira's Place, JK Rowling's trans exclusionary sexual violence support service. JK Rowling threw a shit fit and got Amnesty to take the report down by threatening libel. This was obviously not enough, because you can't appease a fascist, so now she's going to bankroll a bunch of lawsuits anyway through the JK Rowling Women's Fund.*

You can read an archived version of the report here, please save it and share it.

*Not so friendly reminder there is no way to engage in the wizard books without enabling this shit.

A 10-Point Plan to Make America Affordable https://robertreich.substack.com/p/a-10-point-plan-to-make-america-affordable

The short breakdown:

  1. Reduce prices by removing gov’t gouging (like tariffs)
  2. Increase resources available to the common people (health care, child care, etc.)
  3. Tax the shit out of the wealthy, by which he means, put the high-income tax rates back to what they were in the 70s, and add some bonus taxes for people at wealth levels the 70s couldn’t imagine.

It’s a good plan.

Hello, tumblr! I saw something on here the other day that worried me, so I decided to Do Science about it. But I can't do it alone: I need your help to build the dataset!

Here's what I need you to do:

  • If you see a post with a "mature content" label, and it's 2026, DM me a link to the post.

Yes, that's really it.

I am hoping to collect several thousand such posts, so that I have a decent sized dataset. I do not care what the post is about; if it's labeled as "mature content", I want to add it to my dataset.

If I get 10,000 posts in my dataset before August 31st 2026, I will post my preliminary findings then. I won't feel comfortable calling my findings "settled" before 2027, unless I get over 50,000 posts.

This is - legitimately - my favourite delivery of Shakespeare I have EVER seen (and I have seen some good-ass productions yo, in the Globe Theatre itself even). Like seriously, even though the words are unchanged, he’s stripped away ALL of the archaic pretense and assumed grandeur of ~presenting the bard~ that makes even the most wildly talented of actors and innovative of productions inherently inaccessible to a modern audience. Like, they’re still great, they can still communicate the message and (some) of the nuance, but they’re still always a step removed from being identifiable to any viewer’s lived experience. They’re still always reciting 15th century poetry. But this guy? This guy is like, screw iambic pentameter, to hell with being precious about the material, HOW WOULD AN ACTUAL PERSON SAY THIS SHIT?

Like this. And it’s beautiful. It’s beautiful to hear a soliloquy I loved so much already, and have it come to life in a way it never, ever, did before. I feel like I grasp his motivations, his twists and turns, no longer on an academic level but on a visceral, instinctive one. Because he’s presenting his mental and emotional journey in a way that speaks honestly, like a real person.

So yeah, this shit post? I love it. Deeply and sincerely.

"X did nothing wrong" actually no, X did a lot of things wrong. X fucked up. But I also know that people like X live their lives under a microscope, and that accusations against them tend to get magnified by bias both conscious and unconscious alike, and frankly it scares the crap out of me that you have not only chosen not to question what you've heard, but that you are seeking such drastically disproportionate vengeance on a total stranger. that's not normal.

Image

this post has generated a staggering number of comments/replies/asks all saying some version of "Nice try laundering your argument, but we all know you're talking about [specific person], and i hate you for defending them." and literally none of them have correctly identified who i was thinking about when I wrote this, but all of them have named a trans woman as said specific person.

I do not agree with veganism as a moral standard. If it is your personal moral stance, that is fine. If you think humans eating meat is inherently immoral, I don’t want to deal with you, you’re hopeless. Vegan ideology behaves more like a sect of evangelical Christianity than a dietary choice.

Image
literallycrashingoutrn

Veganism is better for the environment, but claiming that it's a morally superior choice ignores cultural and economic factors that make people eat animal products.

Image
byjove

It is not inherently better for the environment. That is the thing. When you begin trying to explain that local, sustainably sourced animal protein is better for the environment than imported plant proteins that are farmed 3,500 miles away using slave labor, they start tuning you out. Down is better for the environment than polyester stuffing, leather is better for the environment than pleather. We should work on making animal agricultural practices more sustainable instead of trying to shame everyone into eating plant products that are also farmed unethically and unsustainably.

Image
elfwreck

Veganism - vegetarianism, even - is only viable for

  1. Wealthy people
  2. People who live in a very small part of the world that produces enough protein-based plants year round to sustain the locals.

For everyone else, it’s a diet based on colonialism and imports. The ancient nordic people were not omnivores because they disdained plants as real food; they were omnivores because THERE ARE NO EDIBLE PLANTS IN WINTER.

Repeat for desert regions that have several months of “it’s too hot and dry for plants to feed people and still survive themselves” and rocky coastline areas with “if you don’t eat fish & eggs, you won’t get any protein because there aren’t enough seeds or nuts and you can’t grow things that produce them.”

We do live in a society where most people can afford to be vegetarian. We have plenty of imported plants, including protein-heavy plants. But locavore beats the hell out of herbivore for sustainability and ethical environmentalism.

you know how some parents do that toxic thing where they don’t notice or reward kids for improving their behavior, but every screw-up gets remarked upon and used to inflict shame? so you’re stuck in that awful cycle where there are no rewards, only the inevitability of eventual punishment?

Image
biggest-gaudiest-patronuses

and how that makes it extremely hard to judge your own actions or grow into a better person, because there’s no one to confirm that you actually are doing better, and are capable of improving, and are not doomed to forever be a terrible person incapable of growth?

Image
biggest-gaudiest-patronuses

ok so: I don’t know how to explain to you that we’ve built a social media culture that treats people the same way. with the same abusive cycle.

Image
tomboyjessie13

That sounds like cancel culture

Image
biggest-gaudiest-patronuses

I don’t know what to call it anymore. people get heated about terms like “purity” or “cancel” or “call out” culture, or can’t seem to agree on a meaning. I’m not talking about like. no longer supporting rich and powerful celebrities when their abusive actions come to light. I’m not talking about holding people accountable, or warning people about active abusers. but I am seriously concerned about how we treat social media users once they get even a small amount of attention, even in small niche spaces.

I am concerned about this culture of combing through years of people’s social media accounts, looking for “problematic” shit they’ve done. I am concerned with the whole culture of using “call outs” as a tool to harass and ostracize users large and small. I am concerned about the malice we spread behind people’s backs, in screenshots and posts they aren’t able to see. I am concerned with this culture of demanding apologies for things said years ago, things already outgrown and regretted, and of ignoring those apologies even while pilling on more censure. I’m concerned about this whole culture of accusation and misinformation, where the most outrageous claims and holier-than-thou performances are rewarded with notes and views, even as facts are ignored and context removed. I am concerned about the lack of accountability, the way the accused is given no opportunity to defend themselves from the onslaught, the way their responses and explanations go ignored, the way any charge can be made at any time on any evidence, with no ability to appeal or exonerate. I’m concerned about the way this culture targets minority users and turns their own communities against them. I’m concerned about the actually harmful and predatory behavior that gets lost in the bog, and how we have lost the ability to distinguish between shades of gray with any level of sanity. And I am concerned by the sheer number of people who fail to realize they are perpetuating bullying and harassment.

I am enormously concerned with the way people who are “called out” are never forgiven, never allowed to make amends, never allowed to grow, how their efforts to learn and do better are ignored even while strangers callously repeat and reblog and retweet the same criticisms ad nauseam.

And I see this everywhere, happening to anyone. And yes, this applies to larger accounts and youtubers and “influencers,” and a bunch of content creators who may or may not be making a decent living off of their work, but who are certainly not “rich and powerful celebrities.” (Because apparently we spend so much time in online microcosms that ya’ll can’t tell the difference???) Christ, my blog isn’t nearly as large as some people seem to think, it’s obscure by most measures, and still I’ve been the target of mass harassment for years. I’ve seen bad and watched others go through worse, seen users with far larger and far smaller followings driven off of this and other platforms—driven off with a violence and bloodthirst that had nothing to do with making a community safer and everything to do with a toxic culture gone wrong. Fucking fix this already.

Abuse is still abuse when it happens online, when done by strangers, when done en masse, when sanctioned by a community, and when done with “good” intentions. Do BETTER.

Image
biggest-gaudiest-patronuses

oh, and to anyone who has reblogged this and similar posts I’ve written with the “Heartbreaking: The Worst Person You Know Just Made A Great Point” meme? that is literally an example of the behavior this post is criticizing. you are literally just punishing good behavior instead of allowing people to grow and do better. I’ve been the subject of smear campaigns for years, and I’ve lost track of the number of times someone has added that meme to one of my most carefully worded, thought-out, sincere and earnest posts, posts on serious social and mental health issues. It’s exhausting, it’s not helpful, and guess what? It’s just plain bullying. Do better, and allow others to do better too
