STATING that a large number of constructions across Thane is illegal and houses lakhs of people,Union Agriculture Minister and NCP chief Sharad Pawar Saturday said they should be regularised as done in Ulhasnagar earlier. Pawar said illegal structures should be demolished only after its residents are given alternative accommodation.

Speaking to the media in Thane,Pawar said,“Estimates suggest that 40 per cent structures across Thane Municipal Corporation’s jurisdiction are illegal. After a state ordinance, all illegal buildings in Ulhasnagar were regularised. The same should be done for Thane. I will write to Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan in this regard.” He added that regularisation should be carried out only after charging a hefty penalty from the builders involved.
