daily orca 5: T063 "Chainsaw"

chainsaw the orca swimming near the surface, with his head and dorsal fin visible. his dorsal fin is tall and the back of it is uneven and has two sharp gaps in it, giving the fin a "chainsaw"-like lookALT

chainsaw is a male bigg's orca. he was born in 1978 and is ~47 years old. he travels with an older female, whidbey II, who is likely his mother, or potentially sister. chainsaw and whidbey II frequently travel with whidbey II's daughter's matriline, the T065Bs.

chainsaw is a very recognizable and iconic orca, due to his unique dorsal fin that has two gaps in it, likely due to an incident(s) in his youth.

an up-close picture of chainsaw's dorsal fin poking out of the water. the fin has two large gaps on the trailing side.ALT

the avatar movies are crazy bc "what if colonizers literally inhabited and puppeteered the bodies of indigenous peoples in order to exploit their homeland" sounds like the premise of some sort of anticolonial horror film, like specifically the kind of thing that would be commenting on self-indigenization among white settlers, but because it's James Cameron his whole takeaway from that premise is "it would be preddy cool"

actually sorry. the takeaway is also "the white settler possessing an indigenous body would actually be extremely good, perhaps even The Best, at being indigenous, and he would become their Leader"

you work with or go to school with people who are actively in mania and/or psychosis. you just don't realize this.

"the only interactions I've had with manic/psychotic people have been violent" do you live under a rock? do you emerge from your house only once every 3 years? we are everywhere, you just don't realize it.

an estimated 1.1% of the population is schizophrenic. an estimated 2.8% of the population is bipolar. those are not the only conditions that cause psychosis.

The first page of a digitally drawn comic, featuring an interaction between Hayden, from Fields of Mistria, and OP's farmer character, Monroe. Panel 1: Monroe is looking concerned and holding a wilted plant in a terracotta pot. Monroe: "Sorry to bother you... I was trying to propagate this, but I think I did something wrong..." Panel 2: Hayden smiles down and puts his hands over Monroe's. Hayden: "Hey now, don't you worry, Darlin' (emphasized). Happens to the best of us! I'm sure we can get this right as rain in no time."ALT
The second page of the comic. Panel 1: Monroe is hugging the pot to his chest with a frustrated expression. The plant has now been propped up with a support. Monroe (thinking to himself): "How do Hayden's friends handle that every day...? Almost made my damn heart skip a beat..." Panel 2: Hayden buring his face in Henrietta's side. Henrietta is smiling smuggly. Hayden (heavily emphasized text): "I IMAGINED SAYING IT FOR SO LONG IT JUST SLIPPED OUTTTTTTTTTT".ALT

hayden x monroe; old silly comic i finally finished

(i like to think hayden is big on pet names 🤭)

writing tip: searching "[place of origin]ish names" will get you a lot of stuff and nonsense made up by baby bloggers.

searching "[place] census [year]" will get you lists of real names of real people who lived in that place.

I feel like I'm constantly shilling for them but BehindTheName.com, the only baby name site that doesn't feel like it's run by mommy bloggers, includes census-based graphs for dozens of countries/regions (though not all of them go back very far yet)

image

And you can expand them to see rank, number of babies, and percentage of babies and add a second name to compare. (in 1973 four percent of babies were named Jennifer! 1 in 25!!!)

Hey, if anyone’s curious, this IS making a serious impact — this handbook was taught as standard practice for my EMT license course, as well as several other programs. A lot of new providers are being taught this as a matter of course.
