They don’t have a screen or buttons, so you control them talking to them. Anyone can build one from home with off-the-shelf parts, a printer, and a Sunday afternoon. Our six pre-designed templates are: an umbrella that tracks rain, an arrow that tracks the value of a currency, a timer that counts down to whatever you tell it to countdown to, a rocket that shows you when a rocket is launching, a person that signals when it’s time to take a break, and pants that tell you whether it’s warm enough to wear shorts. You can build one of these six example signals, or get the open-sourced code to create their own. They develop before your eyes. You can share them, gift them, spill water on them, draw on them. The only problem is that most instant cameras don’t take very good photos — that’s why I’ve always wanted to hack my medium format camera to take instant photos with shallow depth of field and sharpness. We took an instant camera and a medium format camera and hacked them into one franken-camera that takes incredible photos. Ever since completing this project we’ve been sharing part files, and instructions with hundreds of hobbyists interested in making their own. I’ve played around with one a bit, but the back is pretty bulky, the film is expensive, and the film area is larger than the camera can expose. It stores enough energy to give you a good zap. As the exposed film leaves the camera, it is pulled through a set of tensioned-rollers that evenly spread the developing chemicals over the film. <img width="1500" height="844" width_o="1500" height_o="844" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/d8a7a7878d641ef26f2696a48bfc9f1519b08a38777af0936195d6b8c58e902f/Hassie_Process_10.jpg" data-mid="97524682" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/d8a7a7878d641ef26f2696a48bfc9f1519b08a38777af0936195d6b8c58e902f/Hassie_Process_10.jpg" /> It was important that we could align the loaded film as closely to the body of the camera as possible so that the focal distance of the viewfinder would match the film. To get the instant-film closer to the exposure plane of the Hasselblad, we ended up removing all of the automatic film-ejection mechanisms from the Fujifilm, and opting for a custom mechanism made out of laser cut acrylic. <img width="1500" height="844" width_o="1500" height_o="844" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/f037b09cfcf4fdb9bcd1aafc4f0b1aa19d5e91b7e37fb18bc29e1b1eaff9f9f1/Hassie_Process_3.jpg" data-mid="97524731" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/f037b09cfcf4fdb9bcd1aafc4f0b1aa19d5e91b7e37fb18bc29e1b1eaff9f9f1/Hassie_Process_3.jpg" />One of our biggest challenges was making a custom mounting plate that matched the back of the Hasselblad to the FujiFilm and didn’t leak light. We made a template based on the Hasselblad and laser cut matching groves into a piece of acrylic. Our solution works OK — light still leaks in direct sunlight. The full frame of the film is exposed and the images are sharper than we’ve ever seen on this type of film. Suddenly audio is searchable. Conversations have notes. Audio can be edited by just editing the transcript text. In the two years spent making this little app, the unexpected joy has been in seeing how people find creative ways to use Recorder.&nbsp; Dictating passages to remember while reading, voice journaling on long walks, meeting minutes, jam sessions, thinking out loud, practicing speeches. It can release up to three scents and passively captures subtle chest vibrations associated with the beating of the heart and respiration through clothes. We saw this project as an opportunity to explore the different ways hand-blown glass could be finished, colored, and layered. For the outer shell we used a process called a blow-through to create a gradient from opaque white to fully transparent. We then acid-dipped the whole outer shell to frost it. We wanted the inner layer to be a bright color and to have a form that felt though it was emitting a signal.&nbsp; Checkout some of the process photos below. The project in progress consists of an automated robot that has been installed over a 3 meters long by 1.5 meters wide garden at the University of California at Berkeley. Deep Learning AI policies attempt to control the three-axis robot that tends the garden, which includes edible plants and invasive species in a biodiverse polyculture environment. AlphaGarden does not assume the garden will flourish. The robot will struggle. It will over-water, under-prune; plants may die;&nbsp; invasive species in the garden may take over. The robot is being trained with simulations that run 100,000 times faster than nature. The kit uses a series of clever connectors called Lamello Cabineo that make it easy to assemble using just a drill and wood glue. I swapped the original horn with an Altec 811B I bought on ebay. I also designed the stand (Judd was on my mind after seeing his show at MoMA) and fabricated it with Skilset in the Brooklyn Navy Yard.
