It was, Eliot decided, completely acceptable to hate someone for their ability to sleep like a baby (mouth open, ass in the air, drooling all over the bed) when your own insomnia had you running on fumes.

Hardison's face was comically smushed into the pillow, and while it had amused Eliot for all of five minutes there were at least five hours before anyone would reasonably call it morning and another three before Hardison would stir from his midnight WOW marathon induced coma.

Eliot wanted to be able to sleep like that. Just occasionally, just after a really long day, to be able to go to bed early without needing to know where everyone in the building was, and to wake up calm and easy and warm and know that Alec was only a couple of minutes behind him.

Instead he gets less sleep than ever, lying there waiting for Alec to come to bed and then waking a little more than an hour later breathless and tense and with a guy who thought three hours was a catnap snoring in his ear.

A guy who snubbed sleep until the early hours because it came so easy he never had to worry that he'd miss out. And who asked him every morning why he looked so tired. Like he couldn't even conceive of a night in bed without sleep.

The wave of jealousy was so strong and came over him so suddenly that Eliot had to move, pushing his pillow into Hardison's side in place of his body and escaping the room and the tiny snuffling noises Alec was making as he resettled.

In the living room Eliot put the television on quiet to pick up the news (not that anything had changed in the couple of hours since he'd gone to bed). He booted up his computer to check on a list of aliases he kept tabs on - his own and some of his friends and enemies, the names he didn't let Alec check out for him. The process was automated these days - something Alec had showed him without asking for any additional details - so he wandered into the kitchen to boil some water for tea. Because no one was watching he took the time to prepare it in the right china and with the right level of ceremony.

He drank his tea while he sorted the hits and told the computer what he wanted more detail on, feeling the slow return of his zen as he recovered from his brief lapse. Sleeping with Alec Hardison would make any guy a zen master.

The computer told him what it told him most nights - that everything was good in his world for now, and that no one too serious was on the move with any real intent. He shut down the computer and checked the clock.

Twenty minutes gone.

With a sigh, he picked up a discarded shirt from the back of the couch and went to get his truck keys and coat. Down to the allotment it was then.

Five hours later, Eliot slouched back into the apartment, flicking off all Alec's geeky security gadgets with muddy fingers and anticipating how annoyed the hacker was going to be. He was bone-tired and he ached all over and he made a half-hearted attempt at getting clean before stumbling into the bedroom and falling into bed.

Alec was still drooling. It didn't bother Eliot as much this time around.

It felt like sleep was right there at the end of his fingertips, drifting in that disconnected way, when Alec rolled over and pressed himself up against Eliot's back.

"Hey Eliot, did you sleep well?" Alec asked, all together too chirpy. He didn't give Eliot long enough to think of a response to that as he shot back to consciousness with a lurch. "Oh yeah, you slept well," there was a smirk on his face, Eliot could *hear* it. "How could you not after *that*!?" and he gave a hip-shimmy, just in case Eliot had forgotten the fun from last night.

Oh yeah. Eliot hated him.
