June, when the days stretch out and my body stops recognising bedtime. Being so far north, we escaped the worst of the heat wave but did get plenty of sunshine, including for my midmonth island trip with Mum to Mull. I love Mull, and this trip I finally got to meet a puffin and they are every bit as cute and sassy as I expected.
I’m keeping a fairly low profile on the blog over the summer, so book tags are my perfect speed. The Sunday Brunch Tag was invented by The Reading Chick and I found it – of course I did – via Zezee With Book( Tag)s. I’ve given it a remix to switch out some dishes for personal favourites, and to feature a wider range of options. After all, what’s better than brunch? MOAR brunch.
It’s been a few summers since I last joined in, but this year I can’t resist the call up for 20 Books of Summer. This is a wonderful challenge created by Cathy at 746 Books and now expertly steered by AnnaBookBel where we aim to reduce our TBR over the summer. But what to read?
How’s it been going? My life is best summed up by my not realising I never did an April round-up until I sat down to do May (and it’s a good way into June as I write this). I spent most of April travelling for work, the first half of May travelling for fun, and the last two weeks mostly unwell. It’s been a lot, folks, and I’m not loving it. June is off to a better start, so fingers crossed for a great summer!
Better late than never, the very final Quest Log for this year’s Wyrd & Wonder. It’s been a quiet year for me due to travel and health drama (we’ll be okay, but it has been A Month friends), but I’ve been enjoyed the awesome adventures reported by the party as they romped through the realms of fantasy. Gird your TBRs, it’s time for some last lists and recommendations…
After a five year hiatus, I have returned to Deverry in the excellent company of Mayri the Bookforager and Nic of Dragon Rambles. I intended to post this review for our Wyrd & Wonder prompt of new moon, which invited us to think about fresh starts – sequels, sidequels or in the case of A Time of Exile the start of a new cycle set in a familiar world – but life got in the way. So it’s Throwback Thursday time!
Ariana has been carrying the Quest Log baton for the first half of Wyrd & Wonder this year, but I’m in the hot seat with Lisa today to share some of the adventures our party have been having over the third week. I’ll be rounding up your reviews and random fun, while Lisa has your lists and rec posts!
Maggie sees ghosts, especially when it rains. She lives alone, haunted by her grandmother and her neighbour, largely ignored by her grandmother’s cat. When an unusual patron begins visiting the bar where she works, she is invited up to Tair House, mysterious and imposing and once her mother’s home. But her mother left for a reason…
Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish, and is now hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. It’s all about books, lists and sharing the love we have of both with our bookish friends. In honour of Wyrd & Wonder, I’m sharing fantasy books featuring the moon on the cover.
Each Sunday, your Wyrd & Wonder hosts settle in with a weekly topic to share some Fantastic Fives. May started with the Flower Moon and the moon flower was sacred to Greek moon goddess Selene, so today we’re focusing on lunar deities. I’m not going to lie, I thought this would be easier…
It’s a turning point in the lunar calendar, half way between the full moon and the new. Today’s Wyrd and Wonder prompt explores astrology and the influence of celestial bodies, but I’m taking it as the perfect excuse to tackle the Astrological Book tag and present the zodiac through books.
Tomorrow’s Wyrd & Wonder prompt invites us to reflect on the fantasy we’ve enjoyed since last May, and I’m tackling it a day early because I am a chaos goblin. Remarkably, I have only read 11 fantasy novels in the past year (excluding rereads) or 7 if I exclude horror (which I won’t). As I’m yet to review most of these, this is an excellent day to put that right with some mini reviews.
Each Sunday, your Wyrd & Wonder hosts settle in with a weekly topic to share some Fantastic Fives. We’re starting broad with our month’s theme of transformations, using this first Sunday to explore fantastical transformations that aren’t shapeshifting…
Welcome to Wyrd and Wonder, our annual celebration of the fantastic. Our brilliant party of genre adventurers will once again spend the month of May sharing our love of all things fantasy as we talk about the books, movies, shows, and games that light up our reading lives. We love fantasy all year round, but in May we share the joy together (come join us, it’s fun!).
The people of Anjiin know they’re living on an alien planet, but they don’t remember why or how they got there. They’re about to discover they are not alone in the universe, and be made to prove their right to continue to exist in it. But the Carryx are not the only aliens watching humanity. Which side of an eternal war will offer the best chance of survival?
