“And if you’ll give me 40% of the MOST POPULAR VOTE, I’ll give you my SPECIAL REWARD… A year’s supply of NON-GLOOBY SLIME!!! Never or BARELY used!!!” Tenna concluded his speech with a huge smile, jetting his hands up in double peace signs.
The crowd roared in confused enthusiasm as Tenna gave a gracious flurry of low-FPS bows, pausing only for the occasional stink-nose at his audience plants who weren’t throwing enough 3D roses.
Eventually, the room fell silent. It was Senshi’s turn to speak.
He puffed out his chest, took a long, sweeping look over the audience… and shook his head.
“I can see not all of you are eating properly.”
The crowd murmured with embarrassment.
“I don’t know who needs to hear this, but it’s time to take the turkey out of your icebox. I have seen the ingenious technology with which your people store food… and I have also seen the waste which results from such convenience.
“The food you take had a life. Beasts grew fat on the grass of the field, plants grew from the sun’s rays, and mushrooms grew from minerals in the cracks of caves. And yet, it sits in your iceboxes, collecting moisture until it perishes.
“Eat what is given to you. Because its life will make you stronger, too.”
Without another word, Senshi left his podium and stepped away from the stage. The crowd murmured in confusion. “Is he really like that?” somebody said. “I only remember reblogging the photosets of him tripping and showing ass.”

Back in the Green Room, Tenna wrung his antennas nervously.
“Y-y-you think they liked me!? They HAD to!! I mean, I don’t know what Asgore was thinking, getting that weird haircut and running that food waste campaign, but… YOU thought I did good, didn’t you, Kris?”
Laios nodded aggressively, a streak of blue face paint peeling from his forehead.
“You did AMAZING, Tenna! By the way, now that we’ve seen all your insider campaign secrets, do you have any more videos of Susie? Especially her tail… If I could get a look at that, I could finally tell if she’s a dinosaur or –”
THWACK. Fake antlers butted Laios’s head.
“LAIOS?? Weren’t we dressed up to help SENSHI???” Marcille hissed, gesturing awkwardly with her hooves.
Suddenly, Tenna turned to the two adventurers.
“Hey, WAIT a second. SOMETHING’s not right here…”
Laios and Marcille held their breath.
“Where the heck are my POINTS!?”
Just then, the door opened. Chilchuck took one step into the room, whistling and holding a large bag.
Everyone turned to him.
Chilchuck paused, took a step backwards, and closed the door.
“CHILCHUCK!!!” yelled Tenna.
“How come Chilchuck got to stay Chilchuck!?” yelled Marcille at the same time.

Meanwhile, in outer space somewhere, some guy was making out with a rock.

Some reasons to vote for Tenna:
He made a huge cultural impact online, spawning many AU’s, fanfiction, fanart, ASMR Videos, a dating sim fangame and much more! People are feral for this TV!
He’s middle aged, past his prime and terrified of becoming obsolete (so we must show him that he’s loved!)
He’s bad with modern technology and doesn’t even know what an e-mail is
He is a deeply flawed, relatable comfort character for many
He’d be the FIRST object head to win the contest!
He is canonically queer
He canonically whines when he’s asking for a walk and wants you to be gentle if you want to touch that dial (yep, he says that)

Honestly, I think we need to be paying more attention to the game boards– both the altered versions and the Original Game. They actually predict/foreshadow a shocking number of things about chapter 5 (though the importance of those details ranges from ‘negligible’ to 'says what’s going to happen almost word-for-word’).

Tenna is the first time in all my years as a black person in fandom spaces that I have ever seen people almost entirely unanimously agree that a non-human character with no race-coding one way or the other was black and there be absolutely no argument about it from people who might happen to think otherwise, so to watch people just suddenly try to boil him down to some white guy in a suit legitimately drives me nuts. Like be so fucking serious right now.
I didn’t watch people start to research all sorts of black entertainers and TV stars and be excited to learn about people I’ve loved and looked up to for years for you people to call Tenna a white man and then double down on it just because you don’t like him.

another thing i tend to think about with this. i also just think in chapter 5 there’s a theme of care and dependency. the flowers have extreme guilt over being taken care of by asgore. flowery conceptualizes himself as weak and useless. in the dark world, his fantasy, he tries to return the care given to him to asgore to “make up for” asgore taking care of him when he should’ve died decades ago. it’s an extreme example, but i also resonate with his feeling.
when your body or mind puts you in a situation where your reliance on other people becomes really explicit, you’re trained by the world to see that as shameful or to see yourself as deficient. your efforts to ignore your needs just to avoid “being a burden,” will leave you worse off. you punish yourself because of deeply internalized ableism.
regardless, even by virtue of being a living thing on this planet, you are already designed to need others. you have to listen to your body’s needs even against a society that teaches you you shouldn’t. you have to be okay with the fact that you have needs. sometimes your needs are different or are greater than the person next to you, and all you can do is listen to your body and turn to others when you need them. you’re still a person when you need people.

as far as toby’s said it, having to expand his team has made deltarune a better game. chapter 5 is so expansive because so many people helped to make it. Pink’s fight has sprite work from guest artists, music with Camellia, bullets programmed by Toby’s team. She is, to me, a love letter to Deltarune’s development process as a whole and how it has shaped Toby, and a reflection of the kinds of thoughts Toby has shared with us about developing Deltarune alongside pain. I also think it’s a beautiful follow-up to Gerson’s themes of storytelling and authorship (letting go of “perfection” + accepting the contributions of others = both about rescinding control and embracing perseverance). Pink is also so much more than this, but I’ve been thinking about this a lot.

May I direct everyone to a third, much funnier option: Tenna is occasionally violent but it’s all Looney Tunes type shit.

He catches a bunch of pippins gambling backstage instead of doing their jobs? Grabs one, clasps his hands together to make the pipin into the shape of a bowling ball, then perfectly bowls it down the center into all the other pipins who are scattered like bowling pins. They all stand up with swirls in their eyes before shaking it off, laughing at Tenna as they scatter back to work.

A shadowguy goes off script into an impassioned solo in the middle of a show, so Tenna puts one finger into the sax and it makes the top part explode when blown into, and the shadow guy is shown with his hat blown off and little music notes swirling around his head like old school stars to show he’s dizzy. All the other shadowguys are laughing in saxophone sound effects at him as Tenna gets the show back on track.

A ~~Jongler~~ Zapper turns off the volume at a wrong moment ruining a scene with confetti canons for the third time, so Tenna grabs him and shoots him out of a canon into the snowy area outside. The ~~jongler~~ zapper does a Goofy-style scream all the way to where it lands- leaving a perfect silhouette in the snow when it does. With that out of the way Tenna adjusts his tie and- what do you MEAN everyone wants a turn to be shot out of the canon into the snow now-

Using the stage hook to get ppl off stage when they’re on past cue, shocking them with electricity leaving them doing the silly poses with x-ray effects and frazzled fur/hair/clothes afterwards, stomping on them leaving them as silly shoe-shaped splats on the floor that someone peels off before shaking them back to normal- all done with that streak of Mean we can see in Tenna, but its all so silly & funny/causes so little actual discomfort which is why no one is actually scared of this man after the fact.

*Edit: They’re called Zappers not Jonglers please excuse me I learn the name of something wrong once and it never leaves me TToTT
