About

Started in July 2024, SERVFAIL is a collaborative project aiming to create the coolest authoritative DNS service, completely free of charge. We're currently in beta - stuff may be rough around the edges. Nonetheless, the project is already usable - we even use it in production for our own infrastructure.

So, what does this really do? We provide DNS hosting to folks who don't want to bother with (or don't have the means to) host it themselves. SERVFAIL is an authoritative nameserver network - regular internet users don't connect to us directly; rather, webmasters can delegate domains to us, and we will host their DNS records.

Also, all of our code is open-source, so if you'd like to selfhost the web interface yourself, it's possible! (however, we are still working on making that a little bit nicer)

Features

Compatible

Web interface which works across all browsers* - heavily based on HTML forms, with no mandatory JavaScript.

(* some pages may not render perfectly on older browsers. also, very old browsers may need a HTTPS proxy, but should still work - we don't exclude!)

Packed with Stuff™

With much more to come!

Programmed by hand - no AI slop in sight

Generative AI has no place in our code. Never, ever. We programmed almost everything ourselves, from the ground up - including a custom web framework.
Of course, this doesn't make SERVFAIL bug-free, but at least none of those bugs were caused by the crap-in-crap-out machine. And we have a good understanding of our own code!
Global nameserver distribution: at least one on every continent, multiple servers in the EU.
Fully open-source, and open for new contributors :3
Bash + some Rust + a lot of hopes and dreams.

Core Team

SERVFAIL is run by a team of volunteers, spanning multiple backgrounds and nationalities.
