Single Exposure ICMs

]]>The images in this gallery are representative of the extensive single exposure ICM work I have done over the past several years.

From 2017-2022, I focused primarily on single exposure ICM work. Then, in 2022 my creativity and artistry with the camera evolved when I began creating mainly using multiple exposure ICM techniques. These days, I don't use single exposure ICM techniques as often as I once did, but there is still artistic value in having this technique as a part of my creative process.

These images were all created in-camera by moving the camera during the exposure.

I teach these creative techniques in online courses and on-location workshops through Santa Fe Workshops, as well as through Out of Chicago.

Expressive Cyanotypes

]]>This is a sampling of cyanotype prints I've created since early 2024. In these prints, you will see that I've experimented with the technique and process in ways that attempt to push my cyanotypes beyond traditional approaches. I've been moving in a new direction with my art, and I'm expanding my creativity to develop new work and processes that represent my deep love and connection to art.

Wet Cyanotype is a specific process of creating prints using wet materials, rather than on paper that has been pre-treated and dried. This can be either a wet-on-dry process or a wet-on-wet process.

Pre-Washed means I scanned the print after exposure and before washing it. In some cases, I want to preserve a copy of the print once it has been exposed with all of the materials used to make the print still attached. Oftentimes, the pre-washed version of the print is just as appealing, or even more so, as the end result after it has been washed.

Washed means I have finished the print by washing it in water after the exposure period. This completes the exposure process and washes away any remaining chemicals and material added to the paper before exposure.

Unwashed means I decided not to wash the print after the exposure period in order to maintain the look and texture as it is seen in the image with all of the materials still attached. Washing would materially change the look and feel of these prints, and I decided to finish them with a UV spray without washing.

Experimental Wet Cyanotype means I have pushed further into experimentation with various elements, such as pigment powders, iron salts, salt water, rain water, and a variety of other elements. My Experimental Wet Cyanotypes are all left unwashed.

Environmental Cyanotype means I created the prints on-location, out in the natural world. For these prints, I take dry-coated paper out into the landscape, and I experiment with adding, sand, dirt, mud, iron salts, earth pigments, and whatever water is available on the scene to collaborate with nature in the making of these prints.

Creative Blends - Layering Digital & Analog

I've been increasingly moving towards creating more with my hands, in addition to the abstract photographic work I do.

I'm also very interested in blurring the boundaries to bring all my processes together through layering and blending techniques in Photoshop as another step in the creative process, and I'll build a new gallery for these works in the near future.

All of this essentially represents my deep love and connection to art and is an expression of my inner creative spirit.

The images seen in this gallery are all handmade works using a variety of tools, such as ink, watercolor, acrylic paint, oil and soft pastels, drawing pencils, calligraphy tools, and more on paper.

I am a globally recognized leader in ICM, Multiple Exposure, and Creative Photography techniques. My primary photographic and artistic focus has been on ICM, ME ICM, and creative photography for many years, and I have done extensive work with these techniques, prolifically capturing more than 300,000 frames of ICM, ME ICM, and ME images to date.

I am the Founder and Creator of ICM Photography Magazine, and I co-lead/co-mentor an ICM membership community, based on encouraging and inspiring photographers to learn more about ICM and creative photography techniques...to explore more deeply their own individual artistic and creative vision.

Additionally, I teach a variety of ICM, ME ICM, and Creative Photography workshops with the highly regarded Santa Fe Workshops, both online and on-location. I am also an instructor for creative photography with Out of Chicago, for both their online and on-location conferences. In collaboration with other highly respected creative photographers, I offer workshops in various other locations in the US and the UK. Additionally, I work with a number of online photography communities to provide interactive learning opportunities with ICM and creative photography, such as UK-based Camversation.

In my camera club presentations about ICM, Multiple Exposure, and Creative Photography techniques. I talk about what ICM is and how I became primarily dedicated to ICM and creative photography as a photographer/artist, and I share my personal philosophy about the art and beauty of the more creative ways we can work with our cameras to create uniquely individual and distinctive imagery that stands apart.

I give a basic tutorial on ICM, ME ICM, and creative photography techniques, with plenty of example images, and I provide a number of before and after sets to show the original scene and talk about what caught my attention.

I also provide numerous example images of various ICM movements, along with my personal camera settings for many of the images.

Additionally, I talk about my ongoing global ICM project, ICM Photography Magazine, and how this project and its extensions are celebrating ICM and Creative photographers and bringing awareness to the art of ICM around the world.

]]>This is a series of ME ICM images I created during time spent in Santa Fe, New Mexico, in late June/early July 2023. I'm still working through the whole lot of images and will add to this gallery as time permits.

During this visit to Santa Fe, I led a 5-day, immersive ICM workshop as part of the Santa Fe Workshops Summer Season. Most of the images seen in this gallery were created before the workshop while I scouted out the locations ahead of time. A few of the images were created during the workshop. I feel it is important during workshops to show how I work in the field with my camera movements, but the workshops I lead are always more about the participants than creating images myself.

During this visit to San Miguel, I led a 5-day, immersive ICM workshop as part of the Santa Fe Workshops Mexico Series.
