Sleep when the baby sleeps! Do the laundry when the baby does the laundry! Wash the dishes when the baby washes dishes! Finish your book when your baby finishes their book! 😵‍💫

When I was 22 an editor told me "you're only a writer if you write things that other ppl read." As in: if you publish. The other day I got to tell a young writer "a writer is a person who writes, period." I love getting older & the chance to do things better than they did

A happy freelancer shoutout to @MotherJones for paying the kill-fee equivalent upon submission of the first draft. This makes a huge difference (not having to wait until publication to see a single $, since that can take many months!) All mags should do this.

My new book is called A MAP OF FUTURE RUINS. It’s about memory, myth and migration, and I hope you get to read it someday. Send some love for it toward the stratosphere, so that it may one day soon turn from computer document into a real live book you can hold in your hands? ✨

I spent the past year & a half speaking with immigration lawyers/advocates about vicarious trauma. Their clients need them to be well, yet it's harder & harder to stay afloat. Thanks to @VQR & @typeinvestigate & those who trusted me with their stories.

The thing about finishing a draft is that you get to celebrate for a flashing moment, then you have to finish another draft, and then another, and on and on until you die.

Right after lockdown, some of my oldest friends ended up in an accidental war with the crows. They turned to the neighborhood crow whisperer for help. How did she speak to the birds, I wanted to know, and what did they tell her? My latest for @Harpers

The U.S., a country whose founding mythologies are rooted in freedom and protection from tyranny, invented immigration detention — a creation that is tremendously costly to human life, to the national spirit and to taxpayers, writes @LaurenMarkham_. nyti.ms/3ntUM25

Building a Better Beast-here's a horrifying & totally wonderful vid of my late cousin, Jake Phelps, largerthanlife hero of skateboarding & my childhood. He was rude & gross & hilarious & fearless & so deeply loving & lovable in his particular, enormous way youtube.com/watch?v=ojjVFj…

I wrote about the overlap between climate change & forced migration. To keep people from being forced from their homes we must get serious on climate change, yet the Trump admin both regards migrants as criminals & denies that climate change is real.

We have a lot to learn by studying borders far from home. I wrote about Greece's murderous "pushbacks"––and the lengths governments will go (the US, included) to stop refugees in their tracks. For @MotherJones w/ support from @pulitzercenter
