Aloha! I'm Sloane, I make comics, illustrate, & write fiction. My work explores the visceral & psychic parallels between the biological & the cosmic through a throbbing neon lens! Portfolio: sloanesloane.com Support: patreon.com/sloane Blog: sloaneleong.com

I think right now the dominant trend I’ve noticed in creative work, especially mainstream fiction/comics/etc, is artists creating from a place hyperdefensive social paranoia (see: preempting any ‘problematic reads’ by addressing directly in story or in the commentary around)

cartoonists, please.... cartoon lol. caricature and stylize stuff more. use shorthand. draw things 'badly' or vaguely or not at all when they're not the focus of the panel! realism for realism's sake does nothing for your art 🥲

whatever you're working on right now: lean into it. don't shy away from your weird ideas, from randomness and absurdity, from ugliness or whimsy. GO THERE.

dont make your work for your most bad faith, cruel and stupid reader! make it for someone who's coming to you with their head and heart open, with as much intelligence and respect you're giving the work. you never know which you'll get so might as well aim high lol

I keep seeing discussion about how ""AI"" image/text generators won't ever be as good as humans but one thing im not seeing discussed is how that doesn't even need to happen for it to kill off entire creative industries bc the majority of ppl have NO arts/media education/literacy

it’s funny seeing all these authors who are anti-piracy (and often anti-library!?) just going hogwild using AI to do their book covers and interior illustrations 🤭 not that they weren’t already screwing over the poor Fiverr artists they ‘hired’ before

beyond storytelling styles or grim/hopeful tones, that sort of anxiety in the creative process manifests in a really unappealing way in art. it brings down stories to the level of fable, flattening difficult subjects n themes and maybe unintentionally condescending to the reader
