Grading essays right now. I asked students to add a note after uploading their work: What are you most PROUD of in this piece? I must keep doing this! Such a positive way to start assessing work, even pieces that are pretty rough around the edges 😃

Unconventional review strategy for Romeo and Juliet: I gathered eight R+J/Shakespeare memes and near the end of the unit, we check if we can explain what makes them funny 😂Literature lets students understand all sorts of "inside jokes" that come up in comedic allusion.

Especially for new secondary teachers: Maintaining your own spark of fascination with your content is so critical. When students sense that you are genuinely intrigued with what you are teaching, it invites them into that possibility, even if you teach a subject they don’t love.

English teachers: Are you giving students opportunities to read and write? Are you gathering some forward momentum? Are you posing questions with the potential to intrigue? Giving feeback? Then you're doing great. Ignore that this year doesn't feel like past years.

Something I've noticed: the young people I work with every day have handled the discomforts and inconveniences of pandemic school safety measures with more grace, patience, and cooperation than many adults outside of schools. I paused to thank them for this today.
