In this reimagined picture-book version of Aesop's fable The Tortoise and the Hare, children will learn the importance of friendship, tolerance, and patience as they follow the adventures of Bunny and Turtle.

Bunny and Turtle are the best of friends, but they are very different from each other! Bunny is all action, while Turtle is a thoughtful planner. When Bunny and Turtle decide to climb a mountain together, Bunny is eager to get going. But Turtle wants to take it slow and prepare for the trip. Will Bunny become impatient? Will Turtle's planning pay off?

What's the Rush? warmly highlights the power of accepting differences in others, while also showing the importance of building strong friendships and the value of taking things slow and thinking ahead. This colorful, charming illustrated picture book is ideal for parents reading aloud to toddlers and young children, making it a perfect way to engage with kids about the virtue of patience.

Turtle and Bunny share afternoon tea from What's the Rush

Meet Turtle and Bunny. Bunny is always rushing ahead, while Turtle is in no hurry.

While sharing an afternoon tea, Turtle looks at the faraway mountain and says, “How beautiful! One day I want to climb it.”

“Once I’m ready,” he adds.

Bunny has heard this many times before. So Bunny says, “Let’s go tomorrow!”

“Tomorrow? What’s the rush?” asks Turtle, before accepting Bunny's challenge.

But when the time comes to leave, Turtle doesn't seem to be in any rush.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"This charming journey tale hints at both the need to take action and the importance of careful planning, striking a balance. Using expressive, organic lines, Lee’s watercolor, gouache, and colored pencil illustrations are fanciful and alternate between panels and full-page spreads. Take the time to enjoy this one."

We love this book - the characters and landscapes are so energetically illustrated and rendered. It is BEAUTIFULLY and LUSHLY painted!

This classic tale of an "odd couple" is fresh in this retelling. Lee perfectly shows in words and pictures the tension between those of us that take things slowly and those of us who plan.

Both "planners" and "pantsers", children and adults, rabbit friend and turtle friend will enjoy seeing themselves mirrored in this funny and sweet tale.

Lee's use of negative space and composition is dynamic and well considered. Her page turns are so well paced.

HIGHLY recommend for children and adults alike!

Great book for talking about how each of us are different in the world - and we can still be friends.

This is a variation of the popular tale The Tortoise and The Hare (Aesop's fable). It's a good reminder that there's no need to rush, as the Turtle demonstrates. It shows the reader that it's okay to go at one's own pace. Patience and kindness are key teaching points. The illustrations are inviting and likely to engage the target audience. A touching story that teaches kids valuable lessons.
