One muddy fall could have ruined the proposal Alisa Vandercruyssen, 31, had dreamed about for years. Instead, it became the detail she and her now-husband, Brian, say they’ll treasure for the rest of their lives after millions watched the unforgettable moment unfold on TikTok.
The now-viral clip, captioned “walking into my engagement,” captured the seconds before Brian proposed, when Vandercruyssen unexpectedly lost her footing on the rain-soaked grass and landed face-first in the mud. “We’ll laugh about it forever,” Vandercruyssen tells PEOPLE. “It was the most perfect imperfect moment.”
The surprise had been in the works all day. Brian kept her away from home while friends and family secretly transformed their backyard ahead of the proposal, knowing they were already hosting a Halloween party later that evening with “Minute to Win It” games.
By the time they pulled into the driveway, Vandercruyssen suspected exactly what was happening after Brian handed her a set of press-on nails. As she walked toward the backyard and spotted pink blankets, balloons and an outdoor television waiting for her, she realized she was about to get engaged.
“I actually knew I was about to be proposed to,” she says. “Right before I fell, you can hear me say, ‘Oh my gosh,’ because I was reacting to the gorgeous setup.”
Then everything changed in an instant. Rain from the day before had left the grass slick, her foot slipped out from under her, and she ended up covered in mud before she could even reach the proposal spot.

Rather than panic, both of them burst into laughter. “I’ve always been known for being clumsy, and I’ve never had a problem laughing at myself,” Vandercruyssen says, explaining that the tumble unexpectedly eased the nerves they had both been feeling. “Instead of ruining the moment, it instantly broke the tension of all the emotions we were both feeling.”
After brushing themselves off, the couple settled onto the outdoor couch, where Brian handed her a glass of champagne before playing an animated video he had created with one of her friends that told the story of their relationship through the eyes of her dog. They laughed all over again before he finally got down on one knee as their loved ones watched from inside the house.
When Vandercruyssen later shared the proposal on TikTok, she never imagined how widely it would resonate. The video has since been viewed more than 27 million times, with viewers joking that she had “literally fell for him” and quoting her now-famous line, “I took a tumble.”

She believes the response had less to do with the fall itself and more to do with what happened afterward. “I think people are so used to seeing perfectly curated social media moments that maybe it was refreshing to watch something completely real,” she says. “It wasn’t polished or picture-perfect. It was literally messy, unexpected and full of genuine joy.”
Looking back, Vandercruyssen says she wouldn’t erase a single muddy second. “I hope people take away that you should marry someone who can pivot with you when life doesn’t go according to plan,” she says. “One of my favorite memories is standing there doubled over laughing with the love of my life. I wouldn’t change a thing.”
