A federal court has struck down a Trump administration rule that would have allowed the Secretary of Education to disqualify employers, including nonprofits and local governments, from the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program based on political disagreement with the administration. The court ruled the rule unlawful, arbitrary, and a violation of the First Amendment, finding it exceeded the Department of Education's authority under the PSLF statute. The ruling came in *National Council of Nonprofits et al. v. McMahon*, brought by a coalition of cities, labor unions, and nonprofits including NCN, AFSCME, the National Education Association, and several major cities represented by Democracy Forward and Protect Borrowers.
