The story

In 1866, a group of formerly enslaved men and women gathered in former Union Army barracks in Nashville, Tennessee, with one intention: to learn. That was the founding of Fisk University — and the founding of Nashville's first institution of higher education.

Not a building. Not an endowment. A declaration — that these minds were not only worthy of education but capable of transforming the world through it.

W.E.B. Du Bois. Ida B. Wells. Diane Nash. John Lewis. They did not simply attend this institution. They became the evidence that its founding premise was correct.

One hundred and sixty years later, Fisk is making another declaration.

A History of Quantum Leaps

The Declaration

Formerly enslaved men and women established Nashville's first institution of higher learning in former Union Army barracks. Not a building. A declaration — that these minds were capable of transforming the world.

1871

The Jubilee Singers

Facing severe financial hardship, eleven students departed campus with a one-way ticket and performed across the United States and Europe — appearing before Queen Victoria. They returned having introduced the Negro spiritual to the world and secured the institution's future.

The Standard Set

Fisk became the first HBCU accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges — establishing the standard of academic excellence for Black institutions across America.
