Stand on your feet long enough, and dismissing the old “beauty is pain” adage becomes easy. Every day life—whether you’re a teacher, nurse, banker, or stylist—takes a serious toll on the body. Fortunately, we live in a golden era for sneakers, and the work-appropriate options are seemingly endless. But where to start? “I like to look at the shape of the sneaker first,” says personal fashion stylist Alex Lamb. “If the sole of the sneaker is flat and low, it’s not always going to be as comfortable as something with a bit of extra padding or cushioning around the foot.” Beyond comfort, color, material, and silhouette also drastically affect how professional or easy to style a sneaker may be.

That’s why we spent more than 800 hours testing some of the most popular styles, evaluating their comfort, fit, versatility, and material quality. We also interviewed footwear experts, stylists, editors, and more to learn which shoes make long, nonstop workdays most bearable. Here are our absolute favorites.

Why We Love It
  • Comfortable for long commutes and 10+ hour work days

  • Available in several colors and patterns

  • Comfortable right away

Worth Noting
  • You may need to go a half size up

The Alohas tb. 490 is a work sneaker that you can slip on right out of the box and onto your foot pain-free. While we’re partial to a simple black and white sneaker—they’re just so easy to style—part of the reason we love this shoe is its 17-plus available colorways. Tester Chantia loved the bright red option and how the simple shoe is easy to style for both work and weekend outings. Not to mention its retro-inspired design that, while reminiscent of classic sneaker styles, hasn’t made its way into each of your coworkers’ closets just yet.

Those who value sustainability when shopping will adore it, too. Founded in Hawaii, with collections designed in Barcelona and produced in Portugal, Alohas manufactures products based on demand to prevent waste. The European size chart doesn’t perfectly align with US women’s shoe sizes, but by picking the larger recommended size for her, Chantia completely eliminated a break-in period.

Size: EU35–EU46 | Material: Leather and suede upper and insole, rubber outsole

Site Loop: Person’s feet modeling the ALOHAS Tb. 490 Rife Sheen Red Leather Sneakers.

Chantia, tester (not pictured): “I am totally in love with the design, detail, silhouette, and color of the shoe. I wore them for up to 10 hours without experiencing any discomfort. I even wore the shoes on a 45-minute walk and had no complaints.”

Why We Love It
  • Simple color options are easy to style

  • Comfortable for work and life

  • Loved across generations

Worth Noting
  • They’re minimally supportive

In 2026, retro sneakers are still all the rage, and few kicks are more old-school than the Adidas Samba OG, recognizable by its gum-rubber sole and signature three stripes on the sides. Influenced by the indoor soccer shoes of the ‘50s, Sambas are functional. Former InStyle writer Kieaundria Bellamy can confirm that they’re light on the feet, have excellent traction, and can be worn for long periods (e.g., her 10- to 12-hour workdays). While she’d recommend the shoes to almost anyone, “I would also recommend them to those who have flat feet,” she says. “The shoe itself is flat, so you won’t have to worry about uncomfortable arches.” Those who need more arch support can always swap the insole if the minimal cushion isn’t supportive enough.

You’re as likely to see this style on the fashion crowd—Katie Holmes and Hailey Bieber included—as you are on your new next-door neighbor. The Samba OGs have a flat sole with minimal cushioning. Although they might not be the top option for support-focused shoppers, our tester says they were still very comfortable for long walking days.

Size: 5–15 | Material: Leather upper, nubuck suede toe cap, textile lining, rubber outsole

Kieaundria Bellamy, former writer: “These were sturdy on all surfaces I walked on, and they’re very versatile. I feel as though these can be worn with both dresses, skirts, and work pants. I never really had a specific pair of work sneakers, so these will for sure stay in my rotation!”

Most Affordable Leather Sneaker

Why We Love It
  • 100 percent leather upper for under $100

  • Durable, versatile design

  • Ortholite insoles

Worth Noting
  • Not very breathable

These minimalist leather sneakers are comfortable and affordable—an exceedingly rare combination. Right out of the box, their classic leather exterior immediately stood out to our tester, Sidney, and even though the sole is pretty thin, it cushioned her feet day after day. She felt stable on all surfaces, from slick tile floors to stone walkways, but the thoughtful design details are what really won her over. The Ortholite insole added support and set it apart from other sneakers in her closet. By the end of the testing period, there were minimal signs of wear on the shoes. Given their durability, style, and versatility, she says they’re well worth the purchase. Sidney’s only note is that these aren’t the most breathable shoes, which, while common for leather shoes, is something to factor in if you’re prone to sweating.

Size: 5–10.5 | Material: Calfskin leather upper, cotton lining, Ortholite insole, rubber outsole

Sidney, tester: “A plain sneaker is a must-have, and these are versatile enough for work and play—I even wore them on a Saturday to run errands. They go with dress pants, jeans, skirts, and dresses for professional and casual environments.”

Why We Love It
  • Well-cushioned insole

  • Stable on uneven surfaces

  • Comfortable for 12-plus hours

Worth Noting
  • Scuffs easily

These New Balance sneakers draw inspiration from the brand’s ‘70s-era running shoes, but the platformed silhouette is as suitable for the cubicle as it is for the track. Former Associate Editor Claudia Willen needed no break-in time before wearing her pair for 12 hours straight, with no pinching, rubbing, or painful blistering. The rubber outsole has excellent traction, making these shoes optimal for bike rides to work, walks down cobblestone streets, or jostling subway rides. She also loved the “cloud-like feel” of the insole. The suede and nylon upper stains and scuffs easily, though, which is worth considering if you have to trek outside for your commute (or you just don’t want to be bothered with cleaning your sneakers regularly).

Size: 5–12 | Material: Suede and nylon upper, rubber outsole

Claudia Willen, former associate editor: “I don’t typically wear sneakers to work, but with a high-waisted pant and button-down shirt, these look so chic. I also wore them with all black and received so many compliments. They give my outfits a retro edge and straddle the line between casual and office wear. They really felt sturdy and lightweight, which is no easy feat.”

Why We Love It
  • Incredibly comfortable and supportive

  • Timeless, retro silhouette

  • Durable

Worth Noting
  • Multi-textile construction makes cleaning complicated

InStyle tester Sharon was blown away by the comfort and support these Rag & Bone sneakers provided. From the first time she slipped them on, they were perfectly comfortable, and she experienced absolutely no foot pain because her arches were supported and the soles were amply padded. While they’re a bit of a splurge, “considering the quality, durability, and design of the sneakers, they are worth it,” she says. While they didn’t get very dirty during our test, she was a bit frustrated by the brand’s recommendation that they be professionally cleaned whenever they need a tune-up (given the polyester, suede, and leather construction, it would be difficult to do at home), but that’s a small price to pay for the pillowy comfort the shoes provide during long hours on her feet.

Size: 35–41 | Material: Polyester, suede, and leather upper, rubber outsole

Site Loop: Person’s feet modeling the Rag & Bone Retro Trainer Sneakers.

Sharon, tester: “The foam insoles did a great job in cushioning my feet to avoid any potential aches or cramping. They are comfortable to wear for several hours a day. They elevate work outfits and can be styled casually or in a more dressy manner.”

Why We Love It
  • Crafted from durable, sustainable leather

  • Comfortable for 15,000+ steps

  • Arch-supporting insole

Worth Noting
  • They’re a bit squeaky at first

The Veja Espalar is a jack-of-all-trades sneaker. The ultrasimple design can skew summery, sporty, minimalist, or professional. The first time InStyle Editorial Director Shannon Bauer wore hers, she tested how they’d fare throughout a 15,000-step day in NYC. The verdict? No blisters, just an editor-approved leather sneaker that’s polished enough for the office and stylish enough for weekend wear. The removable insole offers plenty of arch support for all-day wear, and each colorway is neutral enough to style without much thought. Vejas are also made from Brazilian bovine leather without any hazardous or prohibited chemicals, so sustainable shoppers can feel good indulging in a new daily driver.

These shoes are a natural successor to classic Keds or old-school basketball sneakers, but a little cooler. Like many leather sneakers, they squeaked the first few times Bauer wore them. However, she says the noises stopped after the first couple of wears.

Size: 5–11 | Material: Leather upper, recycled polyester lining, rubber outsole

Shannon Bauer, editorial director: “These are absolutely going to be my most-worn shoes this spring and summer. My Croatia trip isn’t ready for how many times I will wear them.”

Why We Love It
  • Minimal, versatile design

  • Molds to the foot

  • Easy to wipe down

Worth Noting
  • They appear dirty quickly

Everlane’s The Court Sneaker proves that less can be more when it comes to getting wear out of your sneakers. The cushioned insole and generously sized toe box will carry you through your commute and office days in stride. After just one day of wearing the sneakers, our tester, Gabrielle, says they began to mold to her feet and felt surprisingly comfortable, considering the relatively slim sole. They proved breathable, durable, and sturdy. Plus, you can easily style these environmentally friendly sneakers with jeans or sweatsuits, especially in the all-white colorway. Because they’re all white, Gabrielle’s pair has required frequent cleaning. Thankfully, the leather is easy to wipe down.

Size: 5–12 | Material: Leather upper, recycled polyester lining, and rubber outsole

Gabrielle, tester: “They’re truly timeless, with a retro-inspired silhouette that’ll never go out of style. It’s easy to build different outfits around the classic design. You can dress casually or professionally with these shoes, and they hold up very well after repeated wear.

Why We Love It
  • Great for wide, flat feet

  • Supportive soles

  • Comfortable for

Worth Noting
  • The ribbon lace option doesn’t withstand high-intensity movement

This wide-foot-friendly sneaker transitions from work to play in a second and has become tester Abby’s go-to for 12-hour days that include commuting to and from her office and very active hours spent volunteering at an after-school program. Abby loved these shoes so much that she already convinced a friend to buy them, crediting their wide toe box, supportive insole, and easy-to-clean upper as the reasons these are her favorite sneakers.

The shoes come with two pairs of laces, including satin ribbons. While cute, Abby found them to be less comfortable with a bow lace, since it’s shorter and doesn’t tie quite as tightly. Swapping to the standard laces solved the minor instability she felt upon the first wear.

Size: 5–16.5 | Material: Suede upper, EVA outsole

Site Loop: Person’s feet modeling the New Balance 204L.

Abby, tester: “Living in New York, I gravitate toward shoes that pair well with stylish outfits, while also being comfortable enough to walk long distances in. These fit the bill, and I know I’m going to wear them into the ground!”

Best Suede Sneaker

Why We Love It
  • Stylish, affordable suede shoe

  • No break-in needed

  • Supportive with plenty of traction

Worth Noting
  • They’re not easy to slip on and off

InStyle tester Paige had her eye on a pair of suede sneakers before our test, and she wears them just as often as she hoped. The Ortholite insole makes them plenty comfortable for long walks and standing, and she felt they had ample traction on every surface she encountered. The slim silhouette was a bit out of her comfort zone, but she found that they elevate her outfits as she runs errands and works from her favorite coffee shops, and loved how the espresso color she chose offers relief from your typical white or black sneaker. Her only complaint was that the cotton laces take a bit longer to untie than those she’s used to, and make them difficult to slip on and off if you opt not to untie them.

Size: 5–11 | Material: Suede upper, Ortholite and leather insole, rubber outsole

Site Loop: Person’s feet modeling the Quince Italian Suede Gum Sole Sneaker.

Paige, tester: “The outfit possibilities with these shoes are endless, and I didn’t feel limited with what I could wear with them, and they always added a level of elevation.”

Why We Love It
  • True vintage style released in 1985

  • For work and activities

  • Great traction

Worth Noting
  • Runs narrow

Originally launched as a casual tennis shoe, this 1985-born white leather sneaker features clean stitching and minimalist lines that pair effortlessly with work attire, and you can wear them straight into your post-work pickleball game. Although our tester Abby usually prefers a shoe with slightly more arch support and flexibility, she found this Reebok style to be a high-quality, durable, and breathable work sneaker. Plus, the traction is great. She was surprised by their versatility, even with such a bold accent color. In an office that ranges from casual to business casual, they were a good fit. These sneakers run slightly narrow (particularly near the toe box), so our tester advises shoppers with wide feet to size up.

Size: 5–11 | Material: Leather upper, rubber outsole

Abby, tester: “These Reeboks are very comfortable for walking and versatile, too. They’re fun if you’re looking for something a little different and retro to mix into your shoe collection. White is timeless, and a pop of green can add a nice touch to a neutral outfit. I had fun pairing them with vintage crewnecks and jeans for a casual look. I can also see myself wearing these with a sundress in the summer.”

Why We Love It
  • Classic high-top silhouette with a modern platform

  • Supportive

  • Elongates the leg

Worth Noting
  • Those with larger shoe sizes may find they look long on the foot

Everyone should own at least one pair of Chucks in their lifetime, and this lifted version is an excellent choice for people who want a slight height boost or just want to play with exaggerated proportions. The elevated platform elongates your legs, allowing you to pair them with your favorite work jeans or trousers for a casual yet style-forward look. Beyond its visual benefits, the platform creates a cloud-like cushion for your feet. Walk thousands of steps in them; they won’t let you down. One of the main draws of these Converse sneakers is that they elongate your legs, but our tester advises keeping your shoe size in mind—she says the high-top and platform combo makes her relatively large feet look disproportionately long if she doesn’t style them well.

Size: 5–11 | Material: Canvas upper, EVA foam cushioning, and rubber outsole

Elena, tester (not pictured): “This Converse style is a solid shoe that you can wear to work or to run errands. It won’t be the shoe you slip on and run out of the house in because of the high-top design and laces, but with the right outfit, it can make for a super cute look.”

Why We Love It
  • Slip-on design looks professional

  • Thin, breathable material

  • Comfortable for travel and walking

Worth Noting
  • Rubbed our tester’s feet slightly at first, but didn’t blister

As both an avid loafer and sneaker wearer, InStyle tester Abby found the Rothy’s Slip-On Sneaker to be the perfect in-between shoe for her long days on a photoshoot set. The breathable, flexible upper and durable, supportive insole have made them her go-to for everything from in-office meetings to grocery store runs and travel. They rubbed the backs of her ankles slightly the first time or two she wore them, but they never caused a blister. In fact, they’ve gotten more comfortable with each wear, forming to her feet with each step.

Size: 5–13 | Material: Textile upper, polyurethane insole, thermoplastic polyurethane outsole

Site Loop: Person’s feet modeling the Rothy's The Original Slip On Sneaker.

Abby, tester: “These shoes are fantastic! They’re high quality, can be worn with all sorts of outfits, and are just comfortable to wear. They’re breaking in nicely, and honestly, they’re getting more comfy as they conform to my feet.”

Why We Love It
  • Trendy, easy-to-style silhouette

  • Comfortable for long work days, right out of the box

  • Elastic at the ankle makes them easy to slip on

  • True-to-size

Worth Noting
  • The nylon-and-suede upper isn’t ideal for rainy days

Seen on the likes of Bella Hadid, Dua Lipa, Julia Roberts, and Katie Holmes, and beloved by InStyle editors, the Vivaia sneakerinas are a wardrobe staple for cool girls worldwide. The slim, ‘70s-inspired silhouette styles much like a ballet flat (hence the name, sneakerina), but features a triple-layered sole like a sneaker. According to InStyle tester Katie, they run true to size and width, are comfortable right out of the box, and are a total complement magnet. Lamb would opt for these on workdays when you’re styling a dress or skirt, and you can certainly throw them on with your favorite jeans and button-down for a pain-free 10-hour workday, no matter how long you’re up on your feet. (Katie confirms, they’re really that comfortable.)

While they’re made of both nylon and suede, this shoe is surprisingly easy to keep clean. Our tester says stains wiped off easily with a damp cloth. We’d still recommend leaving these beauties in your closet on rainy days, though. While they’re made of both nylon and suede, this shoe is surprisingly easy to keep clean. Katie, tester: “Upon first seeing the sneakers, I wasn’t sure if they were my exact style. But, after sliding them on, I realized they were the comfiest things ever and really added a nice pop of color to my outfits. I wore them multiple times to the office for about 10 hours each time, and I never experienced any discomfort.”

Best Designer Sneaker

Veronica Beard Riviera Sneakers

Why We Love It
  • Elevated-yet-understated silhouette

  • Comfortable for long walks

  • Slip-on design

Worth Noting
  • Minimal padding

InStyle writer Emma Greene admittedly wasn’t wearing sneakers much before testing the Veronica Beard Riviera, but the sleek suede shoe rekindled her love for a comfortable work sneaker. They’re comfortable for long days, no matter how much walking. Greene wore them on a 5-mile walk through Central Park and was impressed by how comfortable and well-equipped the shoes were for the rough terrain. They’re about as padded as an Adidas Samba, so they won’t provide much arch or foot support, but they’re not causing any blisters either. Plus, they have elastic laces, which make it easy to slip the shoes on and off.

Size: 5–12 | Material: Suede upper, leather lining, rubber outsole

Site Loop: Person’s feet modeling the Veronica Beard Riviera Sneaker.

Emma Greene, writer: “These shoes are a 10/10 for me. They’re my go-tos for errands and weekend days that include a lot of walking. Testing reminded me that a sneaker actually is more comfortable than a ballet flat for long days.”

Why We Love It
  • Available in bright and neutral colors

  • So comfortable, our tester forgot she was wearing them

  • Don’t need to be broken in

Worth Noting
  • They’re narrow

Another celebrity loved style, the Puma Speedcat is what InStyle writer Genevieve Cepeda calls “a shoe for the office ‘it girl.’” Seen on Emily Ratajkowski, Rihanna, and Dua Lipa, the colorful and versatile sneaker is potentially Cepeda’s most comfortable work shoe. “I wore the shoes for my eight-hour workday, and they were so comfortable, I forgot I was wearing them,” she says. The cushioned insole offered ample support for her 40-minute commute, and the shoes never rubbed or caused blisters. They fit her narrow feet perfectly, so they may not be the best choice for those with wider feet. If you opt to give them a try anyway, consider purchasing a half size up.

Size: 5.5–11 | Material: Suede upper, rubber midsole, rubber outsole

Genevieve Cepeda, writer: “They’re a sleek, stylish sneaker that’s trending—but you won’t see them on literally everyone, as you do with Sambas.”

Our Testing Process

The InStyle team tested 23 sneakers for four weeks as they commuted, worked, and traveled, with some days requiring them to take upwards of 20,000 steps in their work-appropriate kicks. After more than 800 hours of total wear, they assessed each pair based on fit, comfort, support, style, and quality.

What to Keep in Mind

  • Size: If you’re shopping for sneakers to wear all day long, it’s crucial to get the right size. Shoes that run small can lead to cramped toes and achy feet, whereas oversized shoes can cause blisters and lackluster support. Unfortunately, you’ll often need to try on a pair to be certain. “I tend to purchase and return sneakers all the time because, no matter what brand you’re buying from, sizing will be different. You have to test them out to know for sure,” says Alexandra McCown, a former stylist who now helms Frog Wine Bar in Brooklyn’s Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood. “Sometimes, I’ll order multiple sizes to cross-check before returning the pairs that don’t feel right.” While shopping online, it pays to double-check (we’re speaking from experience), especially when converting from EU and men’s sizes.
  • Material: Sneaker material should balance style and function. If you’re going for an activity-focused work sneaker, choose a breathable, odor-resistant shoe with mesh (think the outer shell of a classic running shoe). For messier jobs, make sure your shoes are made from functional, washable materials—and that a little water damage won’t destroy them. If you often get your shoes wet or dirty during your workday, it may be smart to opt for leather (might we suggest black) over canvas, cotton, or suede, which stain and stay wet for long periods.
  • Arch Support: Proper arch support is the make-or-break aspect for those who work on their feet. For runners and athletes, shoes that promise springy inner and outer soles designed to propel you forward are a must. For everyone else, a rubber or gum sole with good traction and enough cushion to support your arches is essential. “Often, I’ll have to keep a pair of shoes on for a full day before I know how they feel on my arches,” says McCown. “After that, I’ll decide whether I need to pair them with insoles.”

Your Questions, Answered

How often should you replace your sneakers?

Replacing your shoes after every 500 miles is a safe bet, so if you walk for three to four hours per day, you should replace your shoes every six months. Over time, rubber outsoles wear down and reshape, and insoles will flatten out (robbing you of essential arch support).

How do you style sneakers?

There are no hard rules when it comes to styling your work sneakers, but when in doubt about styling for the workplace, “styling a sneaker with pants is easier for work than with a short [skirt, or dress], Lamb says. “Shorts tend to read very casual, whereas trousers, track pants, or even longer jeans, read a bit more work appropriate.”

A statement shoe is also an easy way to add punch to an outfit while keeping things casual. “I like to style sneakers for contrast,” McCown says. “If I’m dressed in oversized menswear, I’ll opt away from sneakers in favor of more feminine shoes. For quintessential denim outfits, it’s fun to neutralize with a good classic sneaker.”

Which socks should you wear with sneakers?

In the realm of styling, be sure to consider your sock options. For athletic shoes, a cushioned, fitted sock with compression is a good move. For day-to-day wear, opt for higher, fold-over “bobby socks” as a vintage nod (while avoiding ankle scraping), a classic ankle sock for subtlety, or, if you’re a fan of the no-show socks, invest in a pack of Peds.

How do you clean your sneakers?

How you clean your sneakers depends on their material. Brands usually provide cleaning instructions for their specific designs. However, as a general rule, you can always spot-clean leather with warm water and a brush or cloth. Canvas can usually survive a cycle in the washing machine, and a stain stick pen is great for a quick fix on white sneakers. Keeping suede in tip-top shape is more a matter of prevention. A suede spray can help water roll off and make them easier to wipe down. Once you’ve sprayed your shoes, reapplication at the recommended intervals is key to keeping your kicks spick and span.
