Sure, movies and TV love to depict characters, like Mad Men’s Don Draper and Wolf of Wall Street’s Jordan Belfort, as fashion-forward people with a penchant for classic suits. But in the real world, looking like you work in an office with bad lighting and a strict dress code has never actually been fashionable. Enter corpcore, the internet-born trend that’s making traditional office wear cool by flipping it on its head. First coined in early 2024, the trend takes inspiration from mid-century tailored suiting and ‘80s working women uniforms to bring us a 2020s version that’s chic for both the office and your everyday life. Getty Images While the Internet went wild with corpcore earlier this year, designers started gravitating towards corporate fashion since 2023. Brands like Schiaparelli and Saint Laurent, for example, showed unique takes on classic office staples, including suiting, pencil skirts, and ties. But these are not your average suit-and-tie combos. Schiaparelli’s Daniel Roseberry featured traditional suits in black and tan tones with a twist: neck ties were replaced by long braids. Saint Laurent's Anthony Vaccarello, on the other hand, bet big on pencil skirts, which he paired with oversized blazers with bold shoulder pads and silk tank tops. The two designers exhibited what this trend is all about: rethinking all the corporate fashion tropes by leaning into them. Getty Images That doesn't mean you need to wear a fake braid as a neck tie to get on this trend. There are more wearable and, frankly, basic ways to embrace the corporate fashion agenda without looking like a Wall Street cliché. Ahead, six outfit ideas to embrace corpcore. 01 of 06 Black-and-White Getty Images While traditional office wear would likely call for a matching jacket and skirt, those in opposing colors offer a fresh take on the classic pairing. Bold shades of black and white accentuate the clean lines and tailored shape of a pencil skirt and blazer. And sleek sunglasses complete the look. 02 of 06 Gray Area Getty Images Gray is a traditional corporate color, which may cause some to steer clear of it when it comes to their out-of-office wardrobe. But when styled right, it can be actually chic. Pair a double-breasted blazer and wide leg pants in the same tone, styled with a scarf in a lighter shade. To tone down the business nature of this outfit, opt for a white T-shirt as a base. 03 of 06 A Classic Combo Getty Images Straightforward corporate fashion doesn't have to be cliché. After all, a white button-down shirt is a classic staple that's as good in the office as it is on a weeknight dinner date. For a work-to-night out outfit, style the shirt with a pair of gray pants and a black belt. For a contrast, go for gold hardware that can be juxtaposed over the cool tones of the gray pants. It's all in the balance. 04 of 06 Deconstructed Suit Getty Images A suit can be loosened up. It's all in the way you layer and style the core elements. Leave a white shirt unbuttoned, for example, and wear it as just another layer in your outfit for a relaxed look. Make sure to opt for an oversized suit to add an extra dose of laid back allure to your outfit. 05 of 06 Tied Up Getty Images Neck ties are not reserved for the boys. As proof, this outfit is just the right amount of menswear-inspired style that can turn corpcore into a fashion-forward look. Keep the look in a muted palette, adding a pop of color on your handbag. 06 of 06 Pump Action Getty Images Sometimes a classic pump can be a statement. A fitted black suit, for example, paired with black pumps is another way to channel the corporate uniform without looking old school. Leave a button undone or opt for pants with side slits for a chic take on these office staples. Read more: Fashion Clothing
