Gurman Says New iPhones Will Look ‘Similar to Last Year's’

Several changes are expected this year, but a whole new model will drop in 2025

You might want to wait until next year if you're looking for a refreshed design.

The iPhone 16 is set to arrive next month. While Apple Intelligence, a new camera button, and other changes are expected in this series, a major overhaul might be reserved until next year's phones come out.

In his latest Power On newsletter, serial Apple reporter Mark Gurman details the biggest innovations hitting the iPhone 16 series and shares some insight into what we can expect next year.

For starters, Gurman says the upcoming iPhones will look "pretty similar to last year’s model." The Pro models will get slightly larger displays, the A18 chip, a new camera control button for taking a picture directly from a side button, and different colors, possibly replacing blue with rose gold. The non-Pro iPhone 16 versions will now get the customizable Action button introduced in last year's Pro models.

On the software front, Apple Intelligence will hit the whole lineup, although not until the iOS 18.1 update later in the year. To support the company's new AI features, all four models—iPhone 16, 16 Plus, 16 Pro, and 16 Pro Max—will ship with 8 GB of RAM, up from 6 GB in the lower-end models.

In addition to detailing next month's phones, Gurman's other big news over the weekend is on the iPhone 17. Apple is expected to debut a whole new model next to the standard ones. Possibly called iPhone 17 Slim or Air, this fourth option might run like the standard phone, so with less performance and a smaller screen than the Pro, but stands out with a unique look that sets it apart from the rest of the choices.

Additionally, Gurman says a new iPhone SE could make its way to store shelves by early next year. The iPhone 14 lookalike might be made of plastic, support Apple Intelligence, and have a "crisper OLED display."
