Thank you Purdue University for hosting our YR6 Annual Retreat! These three days were a perfect chance for the members to come together to learn and catch up with each other - and to move our research collaborations forward! Looking to forward to meeting again in person!!
Purdue Engineering and Purdue Agriculture welcomed researchers, students, industry leaders and the farming community to the 2026 U.S. NSF Internet of Things for Precision Agriculture (IoT4Ag) Annual Retreat, held May 19–21 at the Beck Agricultural Center and regional Indiana farms. The three-day event featured research updates from partner universities, student flash talks, a Shark Tank-style pitch competition, technology deployments at Purdue's Agronomy Center for Research and Education and visits to Ag Alumni Seed and Beck's Hybrids. The National Science Foundation (NSF) Engineering Research Center, launched in 2020, unites expertise across agronomy, engineering, environmental science and economics to develop IoT solutions for food, energy and water security. Dave Cappelleri of Purdue University Mechanical Engineering is the Purdue site director. Read the full story: https://bit.ly/431hulG Purdue Engineering Office of Research and Innovation

New IoT4Ag publication: Researchers Gokulanand M. Iyer, Michael Machold, Anne-Marie Zaccarin, Roy H. Olsson III, and Kevin T. Turner have released “Cellulose nanofibril coated paper substrates for sustainable printed electronics and sensors”—showing how cellulose nanofibril coated paper can deliver plastic-like print quality for screen-printed electronics on a biodegradable substrate enabling moisture sensing for short-lifetime IoT deployments. Why it matters for Ag IoT: sustainable printed electronics require novel substrates that enable high-density, low-cost sensing for applications like agriculture and medicine. Key takeaways: A thin cellulose nanofibril (CNF) layer smooths cardstock dramatically (4.3 µm → 189 nm), improving printed silver ink trace uniformity. The paper’s moisture uptake changes its electrical behavior, enabling capacitive humidity sensing with ~16–23 min response times. #IoT4Ag #AgTech #SmartFarming #PrecisionAgriculture #SustainableIoT #PrintedElectronics

Please join us in welcoming Ngo Ngoc, a Graduate Student at the University of Pennsylvania, to the IoT4Ag community! Minh Ngoc was drawn to IoT4Ag by our shared mission: strengthening food security through technology and bridging the gap between the lab and the field. Through the Olsson Lab, she’s excited to contribute to IoT solutions that help address real-world environmental and resource challenges facing farmers today. A few quick takeaways: - She values cross-disciplinary collaboration (engineering + agronomy + economics). - She’s looking forward to connecting with the broader team at our Annual Retreat at Purdue. - Fun fact: she’s an avid home cook—she loves how complex recipes come together (a lot like engineering 😉). #IoT4Ag #SmartFarming #AgTech #PrecisionAgriculture #FoodSecurity #IoT #ResearchCommunity

Big congratulations to Darren Raj and AgriBugs on their acceptance into the F-300 AgFoodTech Accelerator! 🎉 AgriBugs has spent 10+ years delivering multispectral drone insights that help farmers and researchers spot plant disease, evaluate irrigation performance, and better understand field conditions. Now, they’re pushing the frontier with patented autonomous drone technology built for agriculture—integrating off-grid drone docking stations, automated flight planning, and advanced imaging sensors to collect data, recharge, and keep operating with minimal human involvement. Key takeaways: Autonomous monitoring can reduce scouting time while increasing field visibility BVLOS (Beyond Visual Line of Sight) operations open the door to true “at-scale” aerial sensing Innovation accelerators + applied research partnerships help move prototypes into farm-ready tools We’re excited to see what’s next as this work advances through our IoT4Ag ERC Innovation Award within the Sentinel program at the UF North Florida Research and Education Center. #IoT4Ag #AgTech #SmartFarming #PrecisionAgriculture #Drones #RemoteSensing #Innovation #DigitalAgriculture
