Note: Comprises most of Comoro group of volcanic islands; Arabs arrived in the 17th century and then immigrants from Madagascar, Indonesia, Iran, and Bantu-speakers from Africa; was secured by French in 1886; all but Mayotte became independent in 1975; official languages are French and Arabic, though Comorian Swahili is also spoken.
